Call for greater participation of women in the 2009 local elections

In the local elections in East Timor in 2009 , the members of the Suco Council, the Chefes de Aldeia and the Chefes de Suco were elected by the population for the second time after 2004/2005 in East Timor, which has been independent since 2002 .

Sucos are the smallest administrative unit in the country. It is presided over by an elected council and its chairman, the Chefe de Suco . Members of the council are the Chefe de Aldeias . Aldeias are village communities that have no clear geographical boundaries within the sucos. Other members of the Suco Council are two women, two young people (one of each gender) and the Lian Nain ( German  owner of the word ), a traditional figure of authority.

The population showed interest before the election. According to a poll, 97% wanted to vote. However, only 62% of residents felt that they could freely express their political views in their hometown; 24% say this is not the case with them. Radio, 27% television, 13% friends and neighbors, 9% local leaders and 3% newspapers are the main sources of political information for 31%.

Although no parties officially ran, FRETILIN , East Timor's largest party , claimed victory in these elections. Your candidates would have prevailed most often. There are no official statistics by which to verify this statement.
