Sir Robert Nigel Paul Macaire KCMG (born February 19, 1966 ) is a British diplomat who has been accredited as Ambassador to Tehran since May 27, 2018 .

Life

Robert Nigel Paul Macaire worked from 1987 to 1990 in the Procurement and Procurement, Special Forces and Science departments in the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense . In 1990 he joined the Foreign Service and was employed in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in the Falklands Department. From 1991 to 1995 he was the second class embassy secretary in Bucharest and was in charge of the Know How Fund, a fund for development cooperation. From 1995 to 1996 he headed the Levant, Middle East and North Africa department at the FCO. From 1996 to 1997 he headed the Middle East and North Africa Department at the FCO. From 1997 to 1998 he was head of the southern Africa department at the FCO. In 1998 he headed the Sierra Leone department in the FCO. From 1998 to 2002 he was First Class Embassy Secretary in the Counter Terrorism Department in Washington, DC . Robert Nigel Paul Macaire headed the Counter Terrorism department at the FCO from June 2002 to July 2004. From July 2004 to 2006 he was Counselor in New Delhi . From 2006 to 2008 he headed the consular department at the FCO. From 2008 to 2011 he was High Commissioner in Nairobi , Kenya . From October 18, 2013 to June 7, 2016 he was Director of Government / Public Affairs and Political Risk (Head of connection to the Government Public Relations and Political Risk ) of the BG Group .

Robert Nigel Paul Macaire is married to Alice. They have two daughters.

Arrest in Tehran

Macaire was arrested for three hours on January 11, 2020 during protests in Tehran against the shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 . In response, the FCO described its arrest as "an apparent violation of international law," and Foreign Minister Dominic Raab warned that Iran is on the way to pariah status. Macaire alleged that he did not take part in a protest but took part in a vigil for the victims of the plane crash, stating that "it is of course illegal to arrest diplomats".
