Dominic Raab (2017)

Dominic Rennie Raab (born February 25, 1974 in Eton , Buckinghamshire ) is a British politician and since July 2019 Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom, as well as First Secretary of State de facto Deputy Prime Minister Boris Johnson . From July to November 2018 he was Minister for Leaving the European Union .

Life

Raab is the son of Peter and Jean Raab. His Jewish father fled Czechoslovakia when he was six in 1938 , and his mother comes from the London borough of Bromley , Kent . Dominic Raab studied law and served as a diplomat before moving into politics. He has been a Conservative Party MP for the Esher and Walton-on-Thames constituency since 2010 . He was Minister of State from June 12, 2017 (corresponds to a Secretary of State, see here for details ) for Justice, and Minister of State for Housing from January 9, 2018 .

The British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed him Minister for Leaving the European Union (EU) after David Davis resigned on July 9, 2018 . On July 24, 2018, May announced that he would make the Brexit negotiations the chief thing and took over the negotiations with the EU himself. The Brexit Ministry under the leadership of Raab, on the other hand, should only be responsible for the domestic political preparations for the exit. After the British government had approved a draft of the EU Commission's exit agreement the evening before, Raab resigned on November 15, 2018. As a justification, he stated that he could “not answer in good conscience” for the agreement in its current form. Stephen Barclay was appointed as his successor .

In the new election triggered by May's resignation as party leader in the spring of 2019, Raab applied for this post, but was eliminated in the second round of the preliminary round of the House of Commons on June 18 . The new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Dominic Raab as Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State on July 24, 2019 . In April 2020, Raab took over the business of government pro tempore , due to the COVID-19 illness from Johnson.

Dominic Raab is married to a Brazilian woman and has two children with her.
