Herbert Stanley Morrison, Baron Morrison of Lambeth CH (born January 3, 1888 in London , † March 6, 1965 in Sidcup ) was a British Labor Party politician . He is considered one of the pioneers of British socialization policy , especially in the transport sector.

Life

Morrison was born the son of a police sergeant in Lambeth , London . In his early childhood, he lost his right eye due to an infection. During the First World War he refused military service for reasons of conscience.

From 1920 to 1921 Morrison was mayor of the Labor Party in the London Metropolitan Borough of Hackney and was elected to the London City Council (LCC) in 1922. In the general election of 1923 he was elected to parliament in the constituency of Hackney South, but lost his seat again when Ramsay MacDonald was voted out of office in 1924. He returned to parliament in 1929 and was appointed Minister of Transport by MacDonald (until 1931). During the time of the National Government he belonged again to the LCC and in 1934 became its boss. In 1935 he was re-elected to parliament and competed unsuccessfully with Clement Attlee for party leadership.

In the newly formed Churchill government , Morrison became Minister of Supply in May 1940, and in October (during the " Blitz ") he replaced John Anderson as Home Secretary . In 1943 he ran unsuccessfully against Arthur Greenwood for the office of Treasurer of the Labor Party. After the war ended, he was involved in drafting the Labor Manifesto for the general election in 1945 and led the election campaign. After the surprisingly clear success of his party, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and became Leader of the House of Commons .

After Ernest Bevin's resignation as Foreign Minister in March 1951, he followed him for a few months until the general election in this office. In 1955, at the age of 67, he ran again for chairmanship, but cut in the election, which Hugh Gaitskell won, as the last. After leaving the House of Commons in 1959, he was promoted to Life Peer . He also became Chairman of the British Board of Film Censors . The Morrison Glacier in Antarctica is named in his honor .

Morrison died in London at the age of 77. Labor politician Peter Mandelson , minister under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown , is his grandson.
