John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley
John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley (born January 7, 1826 in Wymondham , Norfolk , † April 8, 1902 in London ) was a British aristocrat and liberal politician.
Life
Wodehouse first attended Eton College and studied at Christ Church College at the University of Oxford . In 1846 he succeeded his grandfather as Baron Wodehouse .
In 1852 Wodehouse entered the Aberdeen government as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign Office , he held this post under Palmerston until 1856, when he went to St. Petersburg as British Ambassador .
Recalled in 1858, he returned to his old post in Palmerston's second cabinet and held it until 1861. In 1863 he worked as a special envoy on the Schleswig-Holstein question without being able to reach a solution.
In Lord Russell's second ministry, he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from October 1864 to July 1866 , after having been Undersecretary of State in the India Office for a short time . After his resignation from this office he was raised to the Earl of Kimberley .
In Gladstone's government from December 1868 to July 1870, Wodehouse was Lord Keeper of the Seal , then Secretary of State for the Colonies until February 1874 , which he took up again in Gladstone's second cabinet in April 1880, but in 1882 after a brief intermezzo as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster exchanged with the Secretary of State for India . This ministerial office held Wodehouse during all subsequent reigns of Gladstone (1882-1885, 1886, 1892-1894). During the latter period he was both Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Lords .
Eventually he became Foreign Minister in Lord Rosebery's government in 1894/95 . Wodehouse was always considered a loyal partisan of Gladstone, but without setting any special accents personally.
He died in London in 1902. His titles passed to his eldest son.
