NGC 2438 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Puppis and the remnant of a star around 4 solar masses . It was discovered on March 19, 1786 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
When observed, the nebula appears to form a unit with the open star cluster Messier 46 . This is in the same direction, but at a distance of 5400 light years it is about 2500 light years further away. However, its radial velocity , which is almost the same, speaks in favor of belonging to the star cluster M 46 .
The white dwarf in the center of NGC 2438 has an apparent magnitude of 17.7 mag.
