NGC 2442 = NGC 2443 (also meat hook galaxy ) is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Flying Fish in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 56 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter.
Everywhere in the galaxy and especially in the longer of the two spiral arms there are purple and reddish nebula regions. These are clouds of hydrogen gas . The intense radiation emitted by the young stars stimulates the gas from which they were once formed to glow red. The trigger for the star formation in NGC 2442 was probably the interaction with another galaxy. The turbulence that was caused by this resulted in a compression of the gas in some areas and thus triggered the collapse of the cloud and thus the starburst. The distorted shape is very likely the result of this encounter. A candidate for this would be the galaxy PGC 21457, some 2 million light years further away .
Together with three other galaxies, it forms the NGC 2442 group or LGG 147 .
The supernovae SN 1999ga (Type IIL), SN 2015F ( Type Ia ) and SN 2016jbu (Type IIn) were observed here.
The object was discovered on December 8, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
