NGC 2423 is an open cluster of Trumpler type IV2m in the constellation of Puppis (back deck of the ship) to the southern sky . From the color-brightness diagram , NGC 2423 has an age of about 720 million years, a distance of 2500 light years and an extension of 14 light years.
Its immediate (optical) neighbors are the two star clusters Messier 46 and Messier 47 .
The object was discovered on March 19, 1786 by William Herschel .
