Messier 46 (also referred to as NGC 2437 ) is a +6.1 mag bright open star cluster with an angular extent of 27 'in the constellation Puppis .
The star cluster is about 5,400 light years away and covers an area of 30 light years. The stars in the cluster are approximately 300 million years old. In the foreground of M46 is the planetary nebula NGC 2438 , which does not belong to the star cluster and is only 3000 light years away.
