Catalog of Galactic Planetary Nebulae

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Catalog of Galactic Planetary Nebulae is an astronomical catalog containing the planetary nebulae of the Milky Way known until the end of 1999 . After its authors Luboš Perek and Luboš Kohoutek , one also speaks of the Perek-Kohoutek catalog .

In 1967 Luboš Perek and Luboš Kohoutek created a catalog with the same name, known as CGPN (1967). The updated catalog described by Kohoutek in an article in Astronomy & Astrophysics is expressly a continuation of the 1967 catalog. It contains all objects that were classified and published as planetary nebulae up to the end of 1999, as well as lists of possible pre- and post-planetary nebulae. This later version, also known as CGPN (2000), was published in the Hamburg observatory's treatises . There you will find further criteria for the inclusion of objects in the catalog.

The tables in the catalog look like this:

  • Table 1: A list of all objects that were classified and published as planetary nebulae by the end of 1999 (1755 entries)
  • Table 2: A list reduced by incorrectly classified objects (1510 entries)
  • Table 3: The list of differences from Table 1 and Table 2 with a reason for the misclassification
  • Table 4: More precise coordinates of planetary nebulae
  • Table 5: A list of possible pre-planetary nebulae
  • Table 6: A list of possible post-planetary nebulae

and some other data and statistics from that data. The objects in this catalog are identified with the so-called PK identifier (PK stands for Perek, Kohoutek), which consists of a character string for the galactic coordinates in whole degrees and a serial number for objects in the relevant square, separated by a point . (An example is 221 + 05.2, in the SIMBAD database you can find the associated fog under the identifier PK 221 + 05.2 .)

The names of the planetary nebulae and their right ascension and declination are given for these Ids in the catalog , respectively for the equinoxes 1950 and 2000, as well as more precise galactic coordinates than are available in the PK identifier.
