SIMBAD ( English S et of I dentifications, M easurements and B ibliography for A stronomical D ata ; German  file of labels, dimensions and bibliography for astronomical quantities ) is a database of astronomical information about objects within the Milky Way .

It is maintained by the Center de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS), France. SIMBAD was created by merging the Catalog of Stellar Identifications (CSI) and the Bibliographic Star Index as they existed in the Meudon Observatory's data center until 1979, and then adding additional source data from other directories and academic literature.

The first interactive online version was made available in 1981. As of October 29, 2019, SIMBAD contained information on 10,858,607 objects under 35,476,936 different names, with 363,737 bibliographic references and 20,339,509 bibliographic citations.

SIMBAD concentrates on objects from our Milky Way, a corresponding extragalactic data collection is the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED).

In recognition of this, the planetoid (4692) SIMBAD (1983 VM7) was named after the project.
