James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn

James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn KG , PC (born January 21, 1811 in Mayfair , London , † October 31, 1885 in London), was a Scottish nobleman and British statesman.

Life

James Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton, and his wife Harriet Douglas. He succeeded his grandfather John James Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn , in 1818 as 2nd Marquess of Abercorn.

He was Lord Chamberlain to the Prince Consort Albert , from 1866 to 1868 under the Ministry of Derby- Disraeli Lord Lieutenant of Ireland . On August 20, 1868 he was a passenger in the Irish Mail on the way from London to Holyhead, where he wanted to take the ferry to Ireland. The Irish Mail had an accident that day in the serious railway accident at Abergele . James Hamilton was unharmed as he was in one of the rear cars. In late 1868 he was promoted to Duke of Abercorn . The title belongs to the Peerage of Ireland . From 1874 to 1876, Hamilton was again Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Hamilton was Major General of the Royal Bodyguard of Scotland, a member of the Privy Council and Grand Master of the Order of Freemasons in Ireland. As heir of the Hamiltons, he also claimed the 1548 James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran , bestowed title Duke of Châtellerault , but in 1864 by Napoléon III. from an older but female line, William Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton , was awarded. In 1881 he became Chancellor of the University of Ireland .
