Peerage of Ireland
Peerage of Ireland is the term used to refer to any peer dignity created by the British monarch in their capacity as Lord or King of Ireland . The ranks of the Irish peerage are Duke , Marquess , Earl , Viscount and Baron . Before 1801 the Irish peers had a seat in the Irish House of Lords , after the Union of 1801 the Irish peers, like the Scottish peers since 1707, only elected a number of representatives to the House of Lords of the United Kingdom (in the case of the Peerage of Ireland 28). The practice ended with Irish independence in 1922.
For some time after 1801, Irish peers were appointed who then did not have a seat in the House of Lords. This practice had the particular advantage that those peers could hold or seek a mandate in the British House of Commons , which would have been ruled out by membership in the House of Lords. In addition, the Union Treaty stipulated that three titles had to expire before a new one could be created, at least as long as the number of Irish peers exceeded 100. The last title was created for Lord Curzon in 1898 .
In the following table of Irish peers, only current stocks are listed. Higher or equivalent titles in other peerages are also listed. If an Irish peer holds a lower title in the Peerage of England, the Peerage of Great Britain or the Peerage of the United Kingdom with a seat in the House of Lords , this is also indicated.
