Awards and other titles
First award (around 1394)
The title was first bestowed around 1394 by King Richard II for his cousin and favorite Edward of Norwich, 1st Earl of Rutland , a grandson of King Edward III. , created. The exact time of the award has not been recorded. In any case, he operated militarily in Ireland from 1394 to 1395 and during this time he used this title in his correspondence with Richard II and was addressed by the king with this. In 1402 he inherited the title Duke of York from his father . His title expired when he fell at the Battle of Azincourt in 1415 without leaving any heirs.
Second award (1620)
The second bestowal was created on October 26, 1620 for the Anglo-Irish nobleman Richard Boyle, 1st Baron Boyle of Youghal , along with the subordinate title Viscount Dungarvan , in the County of Waterford . As early as September 6, 1616, he was raised to Baron Boyle of Youghal , of Youghal in the County of Cork , also in the Peerage of Ireland .
His eldest son, the 2nd Earl, had from his younger brother Lewis Boyle (1619-1642) the title of Viscount Boyle , of Kinalmeaky in the County of Cork, and Baron Boyle of Bandon, which was conferred on February 28, 1628 with a special note Bridge inherited when he was killed in the Battle of Liscarroll in 1642 . He had married Elizabeth Clifford, 2nd Baroness Clifford and was raised in 1644 in the Peerage of England to Baron Clifford of Lanesborough , of Lanesborough in the County of York . In 1664 he was also awarded the title Earl of Burlington in the Peerage of England .
When the 4th Earl of Cork and 3rd Earl of Burlington died on December 3, 1753, the Earldom of Burlington and the Barony of Clifford of Lanesborough became extinct. The remaining titles went to his third cousin, John Boyle, 5th Earl of Orrery . In 1731 he inherited the title Earl of Orrery , created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1660, from his father , along with the subordinate titles Baron Boyle of Broghill and Baron Boyle of Marston . The two earldoms have since been united.
