Viscount Boyle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viscount Boyle is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

In the first bestowal on February 28, 1628 the title Viscount Boyle , of Kinalmeaky in the County of Cork , was created for Sir Lewis Boyle , the second son of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork . Together with the Viscountcy he was awarded the subordinate title Baron Boyle of Bandon Bridge . Since the Viscount was childless, both titles were awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of his own offspring, they could also be inherited by his father's male offspring. When he died childless in 1642, the titles fell to his older brother Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Cork , and have since been subordinate titles of the respective Earl of Cork .

Parallel to the existing title of the first award, the title Viscount Boyle , of Bandon in the County of Cork, was created for the politician Henry Boyle on March 20, 1756 . This was a great-nephew of the 1st Viscount's first award. Together with the Viscountcy he was awarded the title of Baron Castle Martyr , as well as the title of Earl of Shannon , to which both are subordinate to this day.
