Richard Bentinck Boyle, 9th Earl of Shannon (born October 23, 1924 in Ootacamund , British India , † May 9, 2013 near Reading , County Berkshire ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

Family and education

Richard Bentinck Boyle was the only son of Robert Henry Boyle, 8th Earl of Shannon (1900-1963) and his wife Marjorie Walker († 1981). When his father died in 1963, Boyle inherited his nobility titles as 9th Earl of Shannon , 9th Viscount Boyle , 9th Baron Castle Martyr , and 8th Baron Carleton .

Boyle was born in British India , where his father was posted as an army officer. He was an honorary page at the coronation of King George VI. in May 1937. He attended Eton College . Upon graduation, he entered the Irish Guards , where he achieved the rank of captain . From 1942 to 1954 he served in the Royal West African Frontier Force.

Career

Boyle was 1960-1969 Chairman ( Chairman ) and Managing Director ( Managing Director ) of the company J. Starkie Gardner Ltd , a company in the metal industry with a focus on metalworking . During this time he was President ( President ) of the Architectural Metal Craftsmens' Association (1966–1969).

From 1969 to 1985 he was Director of the Committee of Directors of Research Associations (CDRA). From 1975 to 1986 he was Secretary of the Federation of European Industrial Cooperative Research Associations. He was the founder and from 1977 to 1983 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Foundation for Science and Technology.

He was Vice-President ( Vice-President ) of the Inland Waterways Association, the British inland waterway company .

Activity as a businessman

Membership in the House of Lords

With the inheritance of his father's title of nobility, Boyle became a member of the House of Lords on December 29, 1963 . In the House of Lords he was a crossbencher . He gave his inaugural address on June 9, 1964.

He was Deputy Speaker ( Deputy Speaker ) of the House of Lords and Deputy Chairman of Committees (House of Lords), each from 1968 to 1978. From 1992 to 1999 he was Chairman of the British-Armenian Group in the House of Lords (British -Armenian Parliamentary Group).

Boyle was married three times in total. On September 17, 1947 he married Donna Catherine Irene Helen Imperiali di Francavilla, daughter of the Marchese Demetrio Imperiali di Francavilla Demetrio. The marriage was divorced again in 1955. His first wife later became known as a television announcer and actress under the name Katie Boyle in the 1960s and 1970s .

In May 1957 he married Susan Margaret Rogers Hogg, the daughter of John P. Russell Hogg, for the second time; This marriage produced three children, a son and two daughters. The marriage also ended in divorce. In 1994 he married Almine de Villiers (* 1950), the daughter of Rocco Catorsia de Villiers, by third marriage; her family is from Cape Town . Almine de Villiers is a writer and anthropologist . He lived with his third wife near Reading in Berkshire.

His areas of interest included inland navigation (also professionally and politically) and clocks (time measurement, manufacture of clocks and clock technology).

Boyle died in 2013 at his home near Reading, Berkshire, at the age of 88 . His eldest son Richard Henry John Boyle inherited his title of nobility as the 10th Earl of Shannon.
