Virtus Entella Srl is an Italian football club from Chiavari , a city in the Liguria region . The club was founded in 1914 and plays its home games at the Stadio Comunale . Virtus Entella is currently playing in Serie B , the second Italian division.

history

Today's Virtus Entella association was founded in 1914 under the name FBC Entella . The name of the association is based on the Entella river , whose mouth is near Chiavari , which in turn is the home town of the association. However, the club did not keep the name it had acquired in 1914 for long, and in 1919 it was renamed Pro-Chiavari , which lasted until 1935, when it was called AC Entella . Over the years the name of the association has changed quite often, since 2010 it has only been called Virtus Entella Srl .

Around 2010, the foundation stone for the successful development of the association in recent years was laid. Previously, Virtus Entella was a club that for years was to be found in the lowlands of Eccellenza, the highest amateur class of Italian football, as well as the divisions below. In 1988 they were last in the C2 series, as today's Lega Pro Seconda Divisione was called as the fourth highest Italian football league. The club was even third-rate for a long time, but these experiences were already half a century ago. From 1935 to 1972, Entella played in the then single-track Serie C - with long interruptions including occasional slipping into regional football . After relegation from the Series C area in 1988, financial problems followed along with sporting failure, which ultimately led to the club's bankruptcy in 2001.

A year later, in 2002, the club was then re-established and given the name SGS Entella , which soon changed. Since 2010 it has been running under the name Virtus Entella Srl . After the re-establishment, football in Chiavari continued to improve. Started in the amateur field, he was promoted to Serie D in 2008 and two years later to the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. In the second year in this league, Virtus Entella was fifth in Girona A in 2011/12, was able to prevail in the promotion playoffs against AS Casale , but was subject to AC Cuneo in the final . However, due to various license withdrawals, the club was able to move up to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione , the third highest Italian football league. There Virtus Entella took a surprising fifth place in Girona A as a climber, which means that one is entitled to participate in the playoff games for promotion to Serie B and met US Lecce in the semifinals . After a 1-1 draw was achieved in the home game, Virtus Entella was defeated in the Stadio Via del Mare to Lecce with 1: 2 and was eliminated. The US Lecce, however, reached the final and lost there against Carpi FC .

The following season 2013/14 the club finished first in the table and thus rose to the second-rate Serie B. There Virtus Entella played against relegation from the start and had to play relegation games against relegation after the end of the season, in which they met FC Modena . Successful coach Luca Prina had already been released during the season and replaced by Alfredo Aglietti . Against FC Modena is played by aggregate draw 3: 3, due to better placement in the previous table Modena held the class and Virtus Entella would have the way back to after only one year in Serie B Lega Pro must start. However, since both FC Parma and Catania Calcio were not approved for Serie B 2015/16 , Virtus Entella remained in the second highest division.
