The series C (name until 2008 and since 2017; 2008-2017 Lega Pro ) is the third highest league in Italian professional football . From 1978 to 2014 it was divided into the two classes Prima Divisione (1st Division; formerly Series C1 ) and Seconda Divisione (2nd Division; formerly Series C2 ), which hierarchically resulted in the third and fourth league. Each of these leagues was in turn divided into two (1st division) or three groups (2nd division). Since the 2014/15 season, the Lega Pro was divided into three equal groups; In 2017 it was renamed Series C again after almost ten years.

Basics

In principle, 20 teams play in each group; In fact, the number of clubs is often new, for example through license withdrawals and forced relegations from and into Series C.

The formal name of the leagues was Lega Professionisti Serie C1 and Lega Professionisti Serie C2 , each with the suffixes "Girone A", "B" or "C" for the respective groups. The Serie C championships are organized by the Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico , a sub-organization of the Italian Football Association, the FIGC .

The Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico will assign you to the three groups . Usually, geographical criteria have priority, so that the groups are roughly divided into a north-west, north-east and south Italian league. However, sometimes this is not so clear that this principle is broken occasionally.

The season begins at the beginning of September and ends at the beginning of May. As in all of Italy , the first half of the season ends before Christmas and the second half of the season usually begins on the first Sunday after January 6th . The games are usually split between Friday evening and Sunday evening.

As in all Italian leagues, Serie C is about promotions and relegations every year. A total of four clubs are promoted, one from each of the three groups. The first-placed go straight to Serie B , the clubs in positions two to five play in promotion playoffs for promotion. The second meets the fifth, the third meets the fourth. In a direct duel, they determine who has been promoted in two games. In the second phase, the respective winners of the duels meet and determine in a direct duel the second promoter of the respective division. In the event of an accumulated tie after two games, half-hour extra time is played first. If there is still no winner, the better placed club at the end of the season will be promoted.

From each of the three groups, three teams relegate to Serie D.

The series C always comes back this week when the clubs in higher leagues license is withdrawn. Usually these clubs start over in these leagues. Almost every year traditional clubs have to start over here ( SSC Napoli , FC Messina , AC Turin , Fiorentina ). However, these clubs have mostly made it back to Serie A very quickly.

title

Unlike in other European leagues, the Serie C teams determine their own cup and Supercup winners. The top-ranked Serie C clubs of the past season usually take part in the regular cup tournament , the Coppa Italia , and all Italian Serie C teams play their own Coppa Italia Serie C winners. A Supercup game in Serie C has also been taking place since 2000 . The champions of the three groups of Series C determine the winner of the Italian Supercup of Series C.
