The Unione Sportiva Lecce , US Lecce for short , is an Italian football club founded in 1908 from the southern Italian city of Lecce in the Apulia region . Other names are I Giallorossi ("The Yellow-Reds"), I Lupi ("The Wolves") and I Salentini ("The ones from Salento ").
The home stadium is the 40,670-seat Stadio Via del Mare .
history
The US Lecce was founded on March 15, 1908 as SC Lecce (officially Sporting Club Lecce ) with the departments football, athletics and cycling. Initially the club colors were black and white. In 1927 the club merged with Juventus Lecce and Gladiator Lecce to form the new club Unione Sportiva Lecce, whose new club colors were black and red. It was not until the first promotion to Serie B under the Hungarian coach Ferenc Plemich in 1929 that the club colors were changed to yellow and red, which are still valid today.
In 1966, the club moved from the Stadio Carlo Pranzo to the larger Stadio Via del Mare , where it still plays today.
In the 1974/75 season, the then goalkeeper Emmerich Tarabocchia set a record that is still valid today: With 1,791 minutes of play without conceding a goal, he is the goalkeeper who remained without a goal for the longest in the first three divisions.
In the 1984/85 season, the club rose to Serie A for the first time . Then the US Lecce was able to establish itself as a regular Series A participant. This came as a bit of a surprise because the team lost two top performers in a fatal traffic accident six months before their promotion, Michele Lo Russo and Ciro Pezzella . In 1989, the club reached ninth place, the best Serie A placement in its history.
Since the 1990s, the club was more of an elevator team and shuttled almost every year between Serie A and Serie B. In 2004/05 you could celebrate again the ninth place in the top division, but in the following season you rose again. In 2007/08 , however, they were promoted again, but in the 2008/09 season they only occupied 20th and last place in the table and thus had to go back to Serie B. In 2009/10 , the team made it back to the first place in the table Serie A, two years later they were relegated to Serie B again. In August 2012 it became known that the US Lecce had to go to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione , the third highest division, due to the manipulation scandal at the time .
In the 2012/13 season the team reached second place and thus qualified for the playoffs for promotion to the Serie B . In the first round of the playoffs, Lecce faced Virtus Entella . The first game between Lecce and Virtus Entella ended 1: 1, with a 2: 1 in the second leg, Lecce reached the final round of the playoffs. There they met Carpi FC . The games ended 1-0 and 1-1 in favor of Carpi FC. Lecce thus missed the direct rise. This defeat caused great unrest: fans stormed onto the field and caused extensive damage to property, but were held up by stewards as they tried to get into the players' cabins. They also burned police cars that were outside the stadium.
In the following four seasons, the club failed in the playoffs every year until finally, in the 2017/2018 season, as champions, they were promoted directly to Serie B. A year later, the club managed to march straight through from Serie C to Serie A as second.

The association has a large following throughout Salento and in southern Apulia in general. When it comes to away games in northern Italy, the club is supported by many southern Italians living there. The home of the traditional fan scene is the Curva Nord with the Ultrà Lecce , in the 90s there was also an active fan group in the Curva Sud with the Gioventù . A fan friendship exists with the fans of the US Palermo . The biggest rivalry is with AS Bari fans .
