Antonio Chimenti (born June 30, 1970 in Bari ) is a former Italian football player who last played for Juventus Turin . The goalkeeper was previously under contract with Udinese Calcio and AS Roma . From July 2012 until the dismissal of the coaching staff in December of the same year, Chimenti worked under head coach Ciro Ferrara as goalkeeping coach at Sampdoria Genoa .

Career

Early years

Antonio Chimenti was trained in the youth academy of SS Sambenedettese Calcio and received his first professional contract in 1988 at the age of eighteen with the then member of the Serie B. But Chimenti had to wait until the 1990/91 season for his competitive debut. Sambenedettese had meanwhile been relegated to the fourth-class series C2 and the keeper was allowed to play his first five games here. In the summer of 1991, Chimenti did not follow the re-promoted Sambenedettese in the C1 series and was instead loaned to the C2 club SEF Tempio . There he was able to establish himself as a regular goalkeeper and played 35 of 38 league games. For the 1992/93 season, Chimenti was awarded again by Sambenedettese, this time in Serie B to AC Monza Brianza , where he only took on the role of substitute keeper and only played four league games.

The return to Sambenedettese in the summer of 1993 was then short-lived for Chimenti. In October he moved to C1 league rival Salernitana Calcio on a permanent basis . As number one, the goalkeeper was instrumental in the promotion to Serie B , which was secured in the play-offs against SS Juve Stabia , and had to accept only 20 goals in 27 missions. In the following years, Chimenti established himself with his club in the second-highest Italian division: Salernitana narrowly missed promotion to Serie A twice in a row as fifth and the keeper conceded only 39 and 29 goals respectively. In the 1996/97 season, however, the club from Salerno fought for relegation in the second division, which he was ultimately able to realize as fifteenth in the final classification with three points ahead of first relegation rank. In his three years Serie B with Salernitana, Chimenti played 110 of 114 possible league games.

Change to Serie A

In the summer of 1997, his good performance led to the fact that he was able to accept a contract offer submitted by Roma manager Franco Sensi and move to the capital for a transfer fee of three billion lire . After his stations in the C1, C2 and B series, Antonio Chimenti arrived in the top division of his home country at the age of 27.

There he was initially only planned as goalkeeper number two behind the Austrian Michael Konsel . Chimenti got his first competitive match in early September with a 5-3 win in the second round first leg of Coppa Italia over Hellas Verona . On the third league matchday in the 3-1 home win over US Lecce , Konsel was sent off in the 38th minute after an emergency brake, and so the substitute for field player Vágner Chimenti came to his Serie A debut. With his very first action, he parried the due penalty from Riccardo Maspero and was thus decisively involved in the victory of the Romans. Due to Konsel's subsequent suspension, Chimenti played his first game at FC Bologna (0-0) a week later over the full 90 minutes before moving back into the second line. On the 25th match day against AS Bari (2-1) Konsel flew again shortly before half-time, again he was suspended for a game and replaced by Chimenti. This was followed on the 28th matchday another ten-minute use of the Italian because of an injury Konsels shortly before the end of the game, before Chimenti in the last three league games from coach Zdeněk Zeman received three probation opportunities over the full game. In his first season with Roma, he kept his goal clean in five of his nine appearances.

In the summer preparation of 1998, Chimenti was able to turn the goalkeeper duel with Konsel in his favor and went into the new season as number one. Since Roma qualified fourth for the UEFA Cup last year, the Italian also made his European debut in the first round first leg at Silkeborg IF (2-0) on September 15 and also played all seven other Roman games in this competition, five of them without Conceded goal until they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Atlético Madrid . In Serie A, Chimenti was always on the field until the winter break; in the second half of the season he missed a few games, and from the 26th round he finally had to move back to the bench behind Konsel. He was only used once for the capital city team when his rival sustained an injury on matchday 30 and had to be replaced. In the summer, the club signed a new goalkeeper, Francesco Antonioli , and Chimenti's services were no longer in demand.

Three seasons in Lecce

The keeper then moved to Serie A promoted US Lecce , where he immediately established himself as the undisputed number one goal. Also thanks to Chimenti's achievements, who played nine times to zero and only missed one league game due to a red card, Lecce managed to stay ahead of schedule in 1999/2000 as 13th in the final classification. In the following season, however, the club had to fear until the last matchday before relegation could be averted again with a 2-1 win over Lazio Rome - but only thanks to the better goal difference compared to the same points Hellas Verona and Reggina Calcio on the first relegation place . Chimenti was in all league games over the full distance on the field. With his good performance he made an essential contribution to staying in class again.

But even Chimenti could not prevent relegation to Serie B in the next year, which was already certain early on. In the end, Lecce missed a full twelve points on the saving bank. The goalkeeper caused the 3-2 defeat against AC Perugia with a late own goal on matchday six , but was still the undisputed number one of the southern Italians. Only in the last three games, when the relegation was already certain, was his younger teammate Giorgio Frezzolini allowed to collect match practice.

Replacement keeper at Juventus

Chimenti did not extend his expiring contract with Lecce in the summer of 2002 and was instead signed by the top club Juventus Turin . There, the now 32-year-old should take the place as substitute goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Buffon , who had become vacant due to the end of Michelangelo Rampulla's career . In November Chimenti played his first competitive game for Juve , which was also his debut in the UEFA Champions League ; Since the club was already certain of the group winners ahead of time, coach Marcello Lippi granted number two match practice in a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev . In the Coppa Italia the goalkeeper was on the field in all four games, the end came in the quarter-finals against AC Perugia . Chimenti then completed further missions in February at Manchester United (1: 2 / Champions League) and Calcio Como in Serie A (3: 1), where Buffon was injured. When Juventus secured the championship title early on the 32nd league matchday by beating AC Perugia 2-2, Chimenti was substituted on ten minutes before the end, and a week later he had to play Buffon at Reggina Calcio from the 47th minute (1-2 ) represented. At the end of the championship Chimenti then played through in a 4-3 win against Chievo Verona . The defeat on penalties in the Champions League final at the end of May against AC Milan , he then experienced again from the bench.

The following season was very similar for the goalkeeper. In the national cup competition Chimenti was always on the field and reached the final with the team, which was lost to Lazio Rome (0: 2, 2: 2). In the Champions League, he moved into the goal on the last two group match days at Galatasaray Istanbul (0: 2) and against Olympiacos (7: 0) for Buffon after Juventus had already made it to the last sixteen and played in Serie A. Chimenti only the last two games, which had hardly any sporting value, because Turin's third place in the final table was already certain. In the 2004/05 game year, Gianluigi Buffon never fell out; As a result, Chimenti's stakes were limited to one Champions League match (1-1 at Maccabi Tel Aviv , Juve had already been determined as group winners in advance) and two Serie A games on the 37th (one half) and 38th. Gameday. Juventus had already secured the championship title in the first season with 20 top division teams, which of course was to be revoked from the club two years later due to the manipulation scandal . In addition, Chimenti was allowed to play again in the Coppa Italia, but already in the round of 16 they were eliminated in this competition against Atalanta Bergamo .

In the summer of 2005, Chimenti's chance for more permanent missions suddenly seemed to come when Buffon sustained a serious injury in the pre-season phase that put him out of action until the new year. But instead of trusting the previous number two for a longer period of time, Juventus signed Christian Abbiati from AC Milan on loan, a new goalkeeper, behind whom Chimenti was only a replacement. Only when Abbiati injured himself in a 3-0 win at US Lecce at the end of October , Chimenti was allowed to represent him in this and the following two games. The cup match at Fiorentina at the beginning of December (2-2) was the goalkeeper's last appearance in the Juve shirt for the time being .

Time in Cagliari and Udine

With Buffon's imminent return, it became apparent that Chimenti would only have been the third choice in the second half of the 2006 season in Turin. Therefore, the now 35-year-old decided in January to move to the Sardinian club Cagliari Calcio within the league, despite the fact that the contract was still open . Immediately after his arrival, he replaced Andrea Campagnolo between the posts on matchday 18 and played all other league games until the end of the season. Cagliari finally finished fourteenth in the table.

Antonio Chimenti also went into the 2006/2007 season as the number one goalkeeper for the Sardinians. With him in goal, Cagliari remained unbeaten from the 3rd to the 12th Serie A round, but while this run ended at the end of November against FC Empoli (0-1), Chimenti was injured early in the game and had to go through his deputy Marco Fortin, who was newly signed up in the summer , will be replaced. It wasn't until April 7th at US Palermo (3-1) that he was fit again and was able to return to goal. In the end, Cagliari narrowly secured relegation with just one point ahead of Chievo Verona . Although Chimenti had seven goals in his 22 league appearances and was at the top of the club's goalkeeper hierarchy, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007.

After a few weeks of unemployment, the Italian signed a contract with Udinese Calcio on June 29 , where he prevailed in preparation against the young Slovenian Samir Handanovič and went into the 2007/08 season as a regular goalkeeper. But already after the second game day of Serie A, a 0: 5 at home against SSC Napoli , coach Pasquale Marino Chimenti took out of the box and replaced him with Handanovič. As keeper number two, Chimenti was allowed to stand in the Coppa Italia , where the quarterfinals against Catania Calcio (3: 2, 1: 2) ended up. At the end of February, he represented Handanovič for another Serie A match at FC Parma (0-2), but this was also his last appearance in Udinese dress.

Retired in Turin

On July 19, 2008, Chimenti switched to Juventus Turin on loan in exchange with Emanuele Belardi in order to act as a back-up for Gianluigi Buffon for the second time in his career . Just a few weeks later, however , Juve signed another keeper in the form of the Austrian Alexander Manninger , so that Chimenti now had to move back into the third line. Therefore, he did not play a single competitive game for Turin in the 2008/09 season, but was nevertheless firmly committed in January 2009 after Buffon was out almost the entire first half of the season due to injury.

Buffon was plagued by injuries in 2009/10 as well, and when Manninger was not ready to play in mid-March 2010, Chimenti came in Serie A against AC Siena (3: 3) and at Sampdoria Genoa (0: 1) as well as in the Europa League at Fulham (1: 4) for his first competitive games in almost two years. After the game in Genoa, he broke his hand in the dressing room in anger over the goal conceded with one blow against a table. The winning goal scorer Antonio Cassano had previously defeated the goalkeeper with a shot from around 40 meters.

In the summer of 2010, Antonio Chimenti ended his active career at the age of 40. In 22 professional years he had completed a total of 370 appearances in the four top divisions in Italy.

Goalkeeping coach

In July 2012, Chimenti took a position as a goalkeeper coach at Serie A promoted Sampdoria Genoa as part of the coaching staff of Ciro Ferrara . There he had the keepers Angelo Da Costa , Sergio Romero and Tommaso Berni under his wing. But already in December Ferrara and with him the entire coaching staff was dismissed after seven league defeats in a row and replaced by Delio Rossi .

Trivia

Chimenti has two daughters. His nickname is zucchina . Chimenti's father Francesco and his uncle Vito were also professional soccer players.
