Series A 1996/97

The Serie A 1997/98 was the 66th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It started on August 31, 1997. Because of the 1998 World Cup in France, the season ended on May 16, 1998. As in the previous year, Juventus Turin became champions . Brescia Calcio , Atalanta Bergamo , US Lecce and SSC Napoli had to go into the second division . The top scorer with 27 goals was Oliver Bierhoff from Udinese Calcio .

Season course

After the rather poor season in the previous year, Inter boss Massimo Moratti opened his wallet and made new players available for almost € 100 million, including the world footballer of the year 1996 Ronaldo from FC Barcelona . Despite all the investments, it should not be enough for the title again. Inter took the lead right from the start, but ultimately lost more and more contact with the leaders Juventus Turin towards the end of the season . The title fight, in which the surprise team of the Udinese Calcio season with Oliver Bierhoff was involved for a long period of time, was the subject of the usual suspects for a long time, before a negative series of six defeats from seven games at the end of the season, Lazio Rome not only won the title, but also participation in the European Cup cost. The AC Milan played a disappointing season by his standards again, it also could coach Fabio Capello little change, the previously with Real Madrid won the Spanish championship.

After more than 33 years, the heavily indebted SSC Napoli had to move into the second division, which was almost the entire season behind in the last place in the table. With Napoli in Serie B, the two promoted Brescia Calcio and US Lecce also had to go . Atalanta Bergamo , which occupied a secured midfield position in the previous season, could not compensate for the loss of top scorer Filippo Inzaghi and was relegated to Serie B with only 25 goals scored. Inzaghi scored 24 goals for Bergamo last season.
