Edgar Steven Davids (born March 13, 1973 in Paramaribo , Suriname , Kingdom of the Netherlands ) is a Dutch football coach and former football player . He played in the left as well as in the central defensive midfield.

His quick start in connection with his aggressive tackles in defensive midfield earned him the nickname "Pitbull" during his time at Juventus Turin . He was still known for his enormous stamina and high shooting power. Davids' trademark was his orange colored glasses, which he wore since 1999 due to an eye operation. As he explained, it served as protection, but also as a recognition feature.

Player career

society

Edgar Davids began his professional career in 1991 at the top Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam . He made his debut in the Eredivisie on September 6, 1991 in a 5-1 win over RKC Waalwijk . Until the end of the season, the midfielder was given regular playing times by coach Louis van Gaal . In his first year as a professional he reached the final of the UEFA Cup with Ajax Amsterdam and secured the cup with a 2-2 (away) and a 0-0 win against Torino Calcio . However, Davids was not used in the first or second leg.

In the following year, Davids made the final national breakthrough. Davids won the KNVB Cup with the team and the Dutch Supercup before the start of the next season . Between 1993 and 1995, the championship was won three times and the Supercup two more times. The biggest triumph came in the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League season . With a 1-0 victory in the final on May 24, 1995 against AC Milan , the Amsterdamers won the cup. In addition to this, the games for the UEFA Super Cup and World Cup were won, making the international triple perfect. In 1996 they reached the final of the Champions League again, but had to admit defeat to Juventus after 1: 1 after extra time with 2: 4 on penalties . Davids missed his team's first penalty.

He then moved to AC Milan in the Italian Serie A . It didn't last long there and in December 1997 he moved to league rivals Juventus Turin . With the old lady , Davids got along better again and became a regular force and motivator. The Serie A title was won after just six months, and this success was repeated in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 the Dutchman was back in the final of the Champions League with the Turin team. The team lost out on penalties against their previous club, AC Milan. Until then it had been 0-0. Davids was substituted for Marcelo Zalayeta in the 66th minute . In January 2004, the Juve officials decided to loan the midfielder to the traditional Spanish club FC Barcelona , where David's runner-up behind FC Valencia .

He returned to Italy for the 2004/05 season and joined Inter Milan . After a year he turned his back on the club and went to England to Tottenham Hotspur . Due to his energetic style of play, Edgar Davids quickly became a fan favorite and became a mainstay of the Spurs game . He played for the English for two years. Fifth place was achieved both times. In January 2007 he moved back to Amsterdam.

That year he was a key player in winning the Dutch Cup. In the final, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Davids secured the profit with the last hit. In the league they failed with one point against PSV Eindhoven . In a friendly against the Go Ahead Eagles from Deventer before the start of the 2007/08 season, Davids broke his leg, which forced him to take a break of several months.

After healing, he played another fourteen games for Ajax before his contract expired. In 2008 he completed trial training at the MLS club LA Galaxy . In mid-January 2009, Davids was associated with the Argentine first division club and record champions CA River Plate . He was also associated with the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Austria Kärnten in late summer of the same year .

In October 2009 there were negotiations with the English club Leicester City , from which Davids received an offer on October 22nd. After Davids had not contacted the club about the offer for over a week, the club withdrew the contract offer on October 30th.

Then Davids was looking for a new club, most recently he stayed fit at Ajax Amsterdam. On August 20, 2010, he signed a contract with the English second division club Crystal Palace , where he played official games again after two years of abstinence from professional football. Since the club is in financial difficulties, Davids was paid there after completed games. On November 8, 2010 it was announced that Davids is leaving the club after only seven games.

In October 2012 Davids signed a contract as the new player-coach of the English fourth division club FC Barnet . The coach Mark Robson , who was newly signed by FC Barnet for the 2012/13 season, remained in office. Davids played in the team himself and wore the number 1 jersey.

On December 29, 2013 Davids ended his active career after 35 games and one goal for FC Barnet. As the reason for his resignation, the now 40-year-old stated that he felt himself to be the target of the referees who, in his opinion, had forced the many dismissals (twice in 2012/13, three times in eight games in 2013/14). He initially continued his coaching duties and left the club for good in January 2014.

National team

With the Dutch national team , in which he made his debut on April 20, 1994, he took part in the EURO 1996 , the 1998 World Cup , the EURO 2000 and the EURO 2004 . At the 2000 European Championship, Davids was elected to the UEFA selection of the tournament. In October 2013 it was also reported that Davids is now part of the national beach soccer team in the Netherlands.

Controversy with Hiddink

At the European Championships in 1996, Davids had to leave the Dutch quarters prematurely, as he accused the then bond coach Guus Hiddink of giving preference to the white-skinned team members. In this context, Davids Hiddink publicly urged "to get his head off the ass of some players".

Controversy with van Basten

For the 2006 World Cup , Davids was not nominated by Bondscoach Marco van Basten . After the Netherlands left early, he publicly accused van Basten of failure and inability to assess player qualities during the World Cup.

official

In mid-June 2011 Davids was nominated alongside Paul Römer, Marjan Olfers and Steven ten Have as well as Johan Cruyff for the supervisory board of AFC Ajax Amsterdam . The general meeting of shareholders in August 2011 was responsible for the formal confirmation. In parallel to his work on the supervisory board, Edgar Davids also sat in as part of his trainer training at the in-house youth academy “De Toekomst”. However, he was recalled from this position due to his involvement in the planned enthronement of Louis Van Gaal to Johan Cruyff: Davids and his three colleagues had had four to five intensive talks with Van Gaal, who was to become General Director, and made verbal promises to him ; however, nothing was fixed in writing. The exiled supervisory board Cruyff then took legal action against the decision of his colleagues. For all of the club's coaches, the sports management team led by Frank de Boer , Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk also stated that they were behind Johan Cruyff. Edgar Davids and the other three later received death threats at their home addresses and the board of directors announced its resignation. In the course of the clashes, Johan Cruyff was also accused of racism, which he denied and was also relativized by Davids. In February 2012, the association announced that the four supervisory board members Davids, Römer, Olfers and ten Have resigned from their mandate. Shortly before, Van Gaal's appeal had been prohibited by a court order.
