Gennaro "Rino" Ivan Gattuso (born January 9, 1978 in Corigliano Calabro ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach .
During his playing days, he won the UEFA Champions League with AC Milan in the 2002/03 and 2006/07 seasons . He also played in the Italian national team until 2010 , with which he became world champion in Germany in 2006 .
Player career
societies
AC Perugia
Gattuso, who comes from a simple Calabrian background, began playing football when he was a child on the beach in Schiavonea , a district of his native Corigliano Calabro in the province of Cosenza . In 1994 he was signed by the then Italian second division club AC Perugia . After Perugia's rise in 1996, he made his Serie A debut at the age of eighteen on December 22 of the same year .
Glasgow Rangers
In 1997 Gennaro Gattuso moved to Scotland for the Glasgow Rangers . There he quickly won the recognition of the fans for his aggressive style of play, which included the early recapture of the ball in midfield and which earned him the nickname Braveheart . He had a special relationship with the then coach of the Rangers, Walter Smith , who, in Gattuso's own words, was like a "second father" to him.
Smith's successor, Dick Advocaat , initially appointed Gattuso as defense attorney; later, however, Gattuso found no more space in his system, which is why he finally moved to Salernitana Calcio in October 1998 for three million pounds (the equivalent of around 4.35 million euros ) and thus back to his home country Italy.
AC Milan
After only ten months in Salerno, Gattuso moved to AC Milan in 1999 for the equivalent of around 11.6 million euros, with whom he celebrated his greatest sporting successes. In 2003 he was a national cup winner and in 2004 both champion and winner of the Supercup . In the same year, the “Rossoneri” defeated league rivals Juventus Turin 3-2 on penalties in the final of the Champions League . In 2005 and 2007 Gattuso was twice with Milan in the Champions League final. In both years, Liverpool were opponents. In 2005 Milan lost the final, but were able to return the favor two years later. In addition to these successes, he won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with Milan in 2007 .
At the end of the 2007/08 season , after a bad season and the signing of Mathieu Flamini, rumors of a split between Gattuso and AC Milan emerged. In addition, FC Bayern Munich showed a temporary interest in Gattuso's commitment. Finally, Gattuso extended his contract with Milan on better terms.
FC Sion
At the end of the 2011/12 season, Gattuso left AC Milan after his contract had expired after 13 years and switched to the Swiss first division club FC Sion , with whom he signed a two-year contract. In February 2013, after a 4-0 defeat, Gattuso temporarily took over the duties of his previous coach Víctor Muñoz and thus acted as player -coach . Although Muñoz officially retained the office because, unlike Gattuso, he had the necessary license, according to the club's management, Gattuso should take care of matters as captain until further notice. At the end of March, the club signed Arno Rossini as the new head coach. Gattuso remained in the coaching team for the time being, but was dismissed from the coaching office together with Rossini due to lack of success on May 13, 2013.
National team
Gattuso took part for Italy in the soccer world championship 2002 in Japan and South Korea and in the soccer championship 2004 in Portugal . At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , he was world champion with Italy under Marcello Lippi . After Italy's quarter-final against Ukraine , he was also voted "Man of the Match". During the tournament he was a symbol of a team that was less convincing through playful skills than through a team spirit, fighting spirit and the will to win. After the World Cup, he was selected as the seventh Italian in the 23-player All-Star team, alongside Gianluigi Buffon , Fabio Cannavaro , Gianluca Zambrotta , Andrea Pirlo , Francesco Totti and Luca Toni .
After the soccer world championship 2010 , in which the Squadra Azzurra was eliminated in the preliminary round, Gattuso ended his national team career.

Coaching career
After the brief interlude as player-coach at FC Sion, since he has had Luigi Riccio at his side as assistant coach , Gattuso went back to his home country for the 2013/14 season and took over the position of head coach at US Palermo , which had previously been from the Serie A were relegated. After only seven points in six games and the 13th place in the table, the club parted ways on September 25, 2013 from Gennaro Gattuso.
The next coaching station did not go as planned for Gattuso either: At OFI Crete in the Greek Super League , he resigned twice during his six-month term. The reasons were the severe financial turmoil the club was experiencing at the time. After the first resignation in October 2014, Gattuso was persuaded after a conversation with the club management to continue. On December 30, 2014, however, he finally quit after the club repeatedly owed him his salary. A few months later, OFI Crete had to withdraw from the ongoing game operation of the league.
On August 20, 2015, shortly before the start of the new season, the Italian third division club AC Pisa announced the commitment of Gattuso as the new coach. Pisa just failed to qualify for relegation to Serie B in the previous season . Then under Gattuso the return to the second highest Italian league succeeded. Gattuso resigned on July 31, 2017 due to "new, serious, permanent and unacceptable problems" from his coaching position.
In the week after the split from Pisa, AC Milan announced that Gattuso would take over the Rossoneri's offspring. On November 27, 2017, Gattuso took over the first team of AC Milan after the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella . On April 5, 2018, AC Milan extended the current contract with Gattuso until 2021. After AC Milan missed the Champions League place, Gattuso resigned.
On December 11, 2019, Gattuso took over the coaching position at SSC Napoli from his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti, who had been dismissed the day before . In his first season, Gattuso managed to win the Italian Cup with his team .

Others
Gattuso's rustic style brought him the lovingly mocking saying in Italy: “Man descends from Gattuso.” He describes himself as “ugly as debt” (in the original: “ brutto come i debiti ”).
For a long time, however, he couldn't stand his nickname "Ringhio" ( German for "growl" or "growl" ).
Private
Gennaro Gattuso still has close ties with Glasgow . He married his longtime partner, whom he met there. They now have a daughter and a son. In addition, the German professional footballer Cataldo Cozza is one of his cousins.
