societies
Marco Amelia began his career with AS Roma , but he did not come to the A-squad here. For the 2001/02 season Amelia moved to the then Serie C1 club AS Livorno . At the end of the first season in Livorno, the club rose to the Serie B on. In his second season in Tuscany , Amelia became a regular goalkeeper. Thanks to his good performance, he moved into the focus of various Serie A clubs. Finally, he was loaned to US Lecce for the first half of the 2003/04 season . Amelia was then loaned to AC Parma , where he was never used. For the 2004/05 season Amelia returned to his former club AS Livorno, which had meanwhile been promoted to Serie A. In Livorno, Amelia became a regular goalkeeper again and has now been in this position for two seasons.
In the 2006/07 season Amelia took part in the UEFA Cup with Livorno . His goal, which he scored in the very last minute against FK Partizan Belgrade to equalize 1: 1 for Livorno, was spectacular in his European appearances that season . This made him the first Italian goalkeeper to score in an international competition.
After Livorno was relegated after the 2007/08 season, Amelia could no longer be held, so he moved to Palermo, where he signed a four-year contract and replaced Alberto Fontana as number one.
A year later, Amelia switched to CFC Genoa in exchange with Rubinho .
On June 22, 2010, Amelia signed a one-year loan contract with AC Milan . The club was also guaranteed a purchase option of 2.5 million euros. After he left the club in the summer of 2014, Amelia played in lower class clubs.
On October 8, 2015, Amelia, who has been without a club since the summer, joined Chelsea . He received a contract until the end of the 2015/16 season and is expected to join the goalkeeping team alongside Asmir Begović and Jamal Blackman after Thibaut Courtois was injured .
National team
Amelia was a regular member of the Italian U-21 national team and won the U-21 tournament and bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Athens with this team in 2004 . Thanks to his excellent performance in the dress of AS Livorno Amelia recommended in the 2005/06 season for the senior national team . He made his debut against Ivory Coast in November 2005 when he came on for Christian Abbiati in the second half . For the 2006 World Cup , Amelia was called up as the third goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Buffon and Angelo Peruzzi for the Italian World Cup squad. After the World Cup and Peruzzi's resignation from the national team, Amelia initially rose to become the regular substitute goalkeeper for the Italian national team. He played his first international game from the start in August 2006 against Croatia , which Italy lost 2-0.
Amelia was appointed to the squad of the Italian national team as a substitute keeper behind Buffon for the 2008 European Championship . In the course of the calendar year 2009, however, he lost his status as a substitute goalkeeper of the Squadra Azzurra after moderate performance and was ousted by Federico Marchetti . For the Italian squad for the 2010 World Cup , he was not considered by national coach Marcello Lippi and was even ignored in the provisional 30-man squad.
