Federico Marchetti (born February 7, 1983 in Bassano del Grappa , Italy ) is an Italian soccer goalkeeper who has been under contract with CFC Genoa in Serie A since 2018 .

Career

society

Marchetti began his career in the youth team of Bessica and later moved to the youth team of Turin FC . In the 2001/02 season he was included in the professional squad of Turin FC, but did not play a single competitive game for Turin until the end of the season. For the following season, the Piedmontese awarded him to the US Pro Vercelli in the C2 series , the fourth highest Italian division. There Marchetti immediately made the leap into the regular formation and completed all 34 league games for Vercelli. Since he only placed 17th and second to last place in the C2 series with the club, two playout games against Calcio Mestre had to be played. In these, Vercelli managed to stay up with two 1-0 wins. After his return to Turin, the goalkeeper was awarded again. In the two following stations, FC Crotone and FBC Treviso , he did not receive any appearances in competitive games and returned to Turin in the summer of 2004. He made his Serie B debut for Torino on January 16, 2005 when he stood between the posts for the club in the home game against Treviso. The game was lost 2-1 and the goalkeeper then moved again when he came on loan to US Pro Vercelli, to whom he had already belonged on loan in the 2002/03 season.

He completed 13 league games for Vercelli and had to contest with the team again the playout games to keep relegation in the C2 series. In two games, the AC Palazzolo was defeated and the league was secured again. After the goalkeeper at FC Turin could not recommend himself for the first team again, he played the 2005/06 season at AS Biellese . The season was disappointing again, the team finished 16th and only managed to stay in relegation in two playout games against Calcio Portogruaro-Summaga . In the summer of 2006, the goalkeeper dissolved his contract with FC Turin and signed a contract with the second division UC AlbinoLeffe . In his first season in Albino, he was not able to earn a regular place and received 13 appearances in Serie B.

In the following season 2007/08 he was much better and received only 28 goals in 32 league games. With fourth place in Serie B Marchetti was allowed to play with AlbinoLeffe for promotion to Serie A and was only defeated in the finals against US Lecce after Brescia Calcio could be defeated before.

For the 2008/09 season he was signed on loan from Serie A club Cagliari Calcio . He finished the season with Cagliari in 9th place, placing himself ahead of the cup winners Lazio Rome and SSC Napoli . In the summer of 2009 the club Cagliari Calcio signed him finally from AlbinoLeffe, and Marchetti signed a contract with the Sardinians until the end of June 2011. He earned a regular place at Cagliari and prevailed against his rivals Cristiano Lupatelli , Michael Agazzi and Mauro Vigorito .

In July 2011, Lazio announced the signing of Marchetti. He was immediately able to secure a regular place with the Romans and in the following years, with some strong ideas, became a top performer. In 2013 he celebrated victory in the Coppa Italia with the “Biancocelesti” .

National team

After Marchetti was never considered for an Italian youth national team, he made his debut on June 6, 2009 under national coach Marcello Lippi in the friendly against Northern Ireland for the Italian national football team . He did not concede in the 3-0 victory over the Northern Irish. In 2009 he played two more games for Italy. He was also in the friendly international match against Cameroon on March 3, 2010 between the posts and was again clean.

At the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa he was substituted on for the injured goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on June 14, 2010, halfway through the first group game between the Italians against Paraguay . The game ended 1-1, but Marchetti did not concede. He also represented Buffon in the other group matches against New Zealand and Slovakia , but they were eliminated in the preliminary round.

After Cesare Prandelli succeeded Lippi after the disastrous World Cup, Marchetti was no longer considered. Prandelli relied on the younger Sirigu and Viviano for the position of substitute goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Buffon . It was not until Italy's friendly against the Netherlands in February 2013 that Marchetti was nominated again because of his good performance, which he now showed while playing for Lazio. However, he remained without commitment.

From June to November 2013 Marchetti completed three more internationals, but was no longer used. After being nominated only once over two years because of Mattia Perin's injury-related loss , he was returned to the Italian squad as the second substitute goalkeeper at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . In the end, he was the only player in the entire squad who was not used. His last nomination for the Squadra Azzurra was in August 2016.
