Mattia Destro (born March 20, 1991 in Ascoli Piceno ) is an Italian football player who is under contract with FC Bologna .

Career

In the club

Mattia Destro, son of former soccer player and coach Flavio Destro , began his soccer career in his hometown at Ascoli Calcio , where his father worked as a youth coach, before moving to Inter Milan in 2005 . At Inter, Destro played in various youth teams and won several titles. He was also part of the team that won the prestigious Torneo di Viareggio in 2008. Destro himself was named the best young player in this tournament.

At Inter, Destro was also a member of the senior team several times, but was not used in this. In July 2010 he was loaned to CFC Genoa with an option to purchase transfer shares. There he was used for the first time in Serie A and in the Coppa Italia . On September 12, 2010 he scored his first goal for Genoa in a league match against Chievo Verona . Following this one-year loan deal, Destro was signed by Genoa and loaned to AC Siena . The sale of Destro to Genoa was part of the Andrea Ranocchia transfer deal that Inter Milan had signed from Genoa.

Destro achieved his breakthrough at Siena in the 2011/12 season : With twelve league goals, he was the most successful goalscorer of his team and one of the most successful Italian goal scorers in the league. Italy coach Cesare Prandelli praised Destro with the words: “He is a modern attacker. He can be found all over the pitch, never stops running and is also very dangerous. ”Following this season, Siena took an option that enabled the club to acquire half of the transfer rights to Destro. Through his performances, the striker also drew the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Italy. Genoa then bought back the transfer shares in Destro, which had been held by Siena, and at the end of July 2012 lent the striker for 11.5 million euros and half of the transfer rights to the talents Giammario Piscitella and Valerio Verre for one year to AS Roma . The Romans also have an option to sign the striker for a further 4.5 million euros from the 2013/14 season .

However, Destro's first season with Roma did not go as planned. It was not until the eleventh match day that he scored his first goal. A meniscus injury also incapacitated him for nearly two months. In 21 league appearances, he scored only six goals. He was more successful in the Coppa Italia : He scored as many goals in five games and was the top scorer in this competition, which his team lost just 0: 1 to Lazio Rome in the final. In June 2013 Roma withdrew the option to buy Destro and acquired full rights to the striker. In his second season with Roma Destro could not be used due to injury until the 15th matchday. He missed another three games due to a punch against an opponent, for which he was suspended. Nevertheless, the striker was the club's most successful goalscorer with 13 league goals.

In January 2015 Destro moved to AC Milan on loan for half a year . After the loan deal expired, the Milanese had the option of exercising a purchase option. After 15 league appearances (three goals) Destro was not signed up.

In the national team

In his youth, Destro played for various youth teams in Italy. He made his debut for the Italian U-21 team on September 7, 2010 against Wales . In his next game, against Belarus , he was able to score his first goal for Italy's U-21s. In June 2013, Destro won the runner-up title at the European Championships in Israel with the team trained by Devis Mangia after they had to admit defeat to Spain 2: 4 in the final .

The striker was also in the provisional squad of the Italian national team for the 2012 European Championship , but was then deleted from the Italian EM squad like eight other players by coach Prandelli . He finally made his debut in the Squadra Azzurra on August 15, 2012 in a friendly against England . In the course of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he scored his first goal for the Italian national team on September 11, 2012 against Malta .
