Valon Behrami (born April 19, 1985 in Titova Mitrovica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Swiss football player . The midfielder has been under contract with CFC Genoa since the beginning of 2020 .

biography

In 1990, at the age of five, Behrami and his family moved from what was then Yugoslavia to Switzerland. He grew up in Stabio in the canton of Ticino . Behrami's first interest was athletics . In cross-country race he won four regional titles. In 2002 he was naturalized .

From 2006 to 2018 Behrami was in a relationship with Elena Bonzanni, with whom he has two daughters (* 2009, * 2016). On March 18, 2018 it became known that Behrami was in a relationship with the Swiss skier Lara Gut (* 1991) and the two married on July 11, 2018.

As a teenager, Behrami only became interested in football when he was 13. He first played for FC Stabio before moving to neighboring FC Chiasso . He played there for three years. During this time, FC Lugano , at that time the most famous club in the canton of Ticino, noticed him and signed him. Since the club soon had to file for bankruptcy in the following years, Behrami looked for a new club. In Switzerland, FC Basel and Grasshoppers Club Zurich were interested in the defensive midfielder. Since the offer of the Grasshoppers was too bad for him, this club was out of the question for him. When FC Basel finally got in touch, Behrami had already signed with the Italian club CFC Genoa ; through his style of play he had already attracted clubs from Serie A to himself.

Between Italy and England

After a year at Genoa Behrami moved to Hellas Verona in the second-rate series B . In the 2004/05 season he was elected the best Serie B player and attracted top clubs such as Lazio , Juventus Turin , Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan for his performances . The race for Behrami finally went to Lazio Rome, which transferred a total of 6 million euros to Verona and Genoa, as it belonged equally to both clubs.

In the summer break of 2008, after three years in Rome, Behrami moved to the English Premier League club West Ham United . After two and a half years of ups and downs, he returned to Italy in January 2011, fulfilling the wishes of his family, who did not feel at home in England. When AC Fiorentina he signed a contract until 2015, but switched after only one season again the club: In July 2012, he signed a five-year contract at Napoli. In his first season, Valon Behrami convinced immediately as a "clearer" in front of the defense.

Hamburger SV

For the 2014/15 season , Behrami moved to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV , where he signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2017. He played his first competitive game in the first round of the DFB-Pokal with a 2-2 draw; 4: 1 on penalties against the then third division Energie Cottbus .

Return to England and Italy

For the 2015/16 season , Behrami moved to the Premier League newly promoted Watford FC for 2 million euros , where he signed a three-year contract. In August 2017, Behrami returned to Italy and joined Udinese Calcio for two years .

Return to Switzerland

On July 2, 2019, Club FC Sion, based in the canton of Valais, announced the commitment of Valon Behrami. He returned to his home country for the 2019/20 season after 16 years. He received a two-year contract.

National team

Valon Behrami made his international debut for Switzerland on October 8, 2005 in the qualifier for the 2006 World Cup against France (1-1). He scored his first international goal on November 12, 2005, three minutes after coming on as a substitute for the Turkish national team . During the 2006 World Cup, Behrami injured himself while training. In the game against South Korea he was substituted on for six minutes in the final phase.

At the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, he was part of the Swiss squad as well as at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. There he received in his first race in the game against Chile a sending off .

He was also nominated for the 2014 World Cup by coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and played all three preliminary round matches as well as the round of 16 against Argentina.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. He played the three group matches for a full 90 minutes, and was substituted for the first time in the round of 16 when Poland was 1-0 with a quarter of an hour to go. The team finally lost the game in the penalty shootout and was eliminated.
