The FC Chiasso 1905 is a football club from Chiasso , the southernmost municipality of Switzerland , in the canton of Ticino . The club was founded in 1905 and plays in the Challenge League , the second highest division in Switzerland. The club colors have been red and blue since the 1910/11 season. FC Chiasso has not yet had any national successes, the club’s greatest success so far is the runner-up in the 1950/51 season and three semi-finals as the best result in the Swiss Cup so far.

history

FC Chiasso took part in the Swiss Football Championship for the first time in 1910 and played in Serie C, Group East. Since the competition was too strong in Switzerland, efforts were made from 1913 to join the Italian league. In order to classify the playing strength of the Ticino, two test matches against second division clubs were organized, which FC Chiasso won. They were then allowed to take part in the Prima Categoria 1914/15 . During the First World War, only test matches and local competitive matches were played. After the end of the war, they rejoined the Italian league. In 1922, the FC Chiasso fell victim to a restructuring of the league and was divided into the second division. When it was determined that they were relegated to the sport there, it was decided to take part in Swiss gaming again from 1923.

In the first season in the then third-class Serie B, FC Chiasso was able to celebrate promotion immediately. With the renewed rise in 1927, FC Chiasso was allowed to participate in Serie A for the first time. In 1929 they reached fourth place in the group east. When the National League was introduced in 1931, they had a bad season and could not qualify for the new division. After a short detour into the third division, the FC Chiasso played from then on in the 1st division, which was downgraded to the third highest division in 1944 (introduction of the National League B). In 1947 and 1948 there were two promotions, up to the National League A. There, FC Chiasso experienced its golden years and even became runner-up in 1951. After relegation in 1962, FC Chiasso developed into an elevator team . From the 1990s, this activity shifted one league level down.

The 2007/08 season was absolutely disappointing for the South Ticino, instead of playing for promotion against relegation. In the second half of the season a race to catch up was started, but the league was still missed. Since then, the South Ticino have played in the first division . In the 2008/09 season, Chiasso was the best team in his first division group and reached the promotion games, in which it surprisingly failed at FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne .

President Marco Grassi helped the club, which was ailing years ago, financially, so that FC Chiasso was promoted to the Challenge League at the end of the 2009/10 season . In the following years the FC Chiasso was able to establish itself. In the following two seasons, the Ticino landed in seventh place. After the league was downsized, the club ended up in the midfield of the league. In the 2016/17 season, Chiasso narrowly escaped relegation. The Ticino landed in eighth place. The last placed FC Wil was only 3 points behind, which was deducted from him due to licensing violations. Relegated was the FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne which the license was denied and waived an appeal. Chiasso finished eighth the following year, but now with an 18-point lead. In the 2018/19 season, relegation was prevented in the last game, as they were able to overtake FC Rapperswil-Jona thanks to a victory .

Stadion

The Stadio Comunale holds 11,168 spectators and was built in the late 1960s. The first game in the new stadium on August 31, 1969 was the game of FC Chiasso against FC Grenchen , which ended with a 2-0 win for the hosts. The average attendance at FC Chiasso between 2005 and 2008 was around 1,300.
