The Rapperswil-Jona Football Club , or FC Rapperswil-Jona for short or just FCRJ , is a football club in Switzerland from the town of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen . In the 2017/18 season , the first team played in Switzerland's second-highest league, the Challenge League , for the first time .

history

In the 2007/08 season they failed in the qualifying round for promotion to the Challenge League with 4: 3 (H) or 1: 2 (A) just at Stade Nyonnais . A year later, the SC Kriens club was facing the sun on its way to the Challenge League. In the 2009/10 season, FC Rapperswil-Jona qualified for the promotion games in the Challenge League for the third time in a row, survived the first round against Etoile Carouge and failed in the final agreement at FC Chiasso (0: 1 and 0: 2). In the 2013/14 season, promotion to the newly created Promotion League was achieved. The team prevailed in the semi-finals of the qualifying games against FC Naters twice with 1: 0 and in the final against FC Düdingen with 1: 1 (A) and 0: 0 (H), which allowed the FCRJ to rise thanks to the away goals rule.

Promotion to the Challenge League

In the 2016/17 season , FC Rapperswil-Jona achieved the greatest success in its 89-year history. With the 5-1 win at home against the newcomers FC United Zurich on the third from last game day and the simultaneous draw of the table leaders SC Kriens against FC La Chaux-de-Fonds , they took over on May 13, 2017 for the first time since the second game day the championship lead in the Promotion League . In the penultimate game against FC Zurich U21 , the Rapperswilers were finally able to seal their promotion, because on the one hand their direct pursuer SC Kriens lost 1-0 to FC Breitenrain and they won 2-0 against FC Zurich. This gave FC Rapperswil-Jona five points ahead of the last game.

Relegation to the Promotion League

On May 26, 2019, the game of fate against FC Aarau was lost, and since Chiasso won against FC Wil at the same time, relegation for FCRJ was sealed after 2 years in the Challenge League.
