The FC Breitenrain is a sports club based in Bern . The club colors are white and red. It was founded in 1994 as a merger of the two football clubs FC Minerva and FC Zähringia .
history
FC Zähringia
FC Zähringia was originally founded in 1910 under the name FC Viktoria. In 1917 the club became a member of the Swiss Football Association (SFV) and thus entered the Serie C championship. Since there was already a club called FC Viktoria, a new name change was inevitable, as two clubs with the same name would have caused confusion. It was decided to rename the club from the Zähringerstadt in FC Zähringia. The years 1920–1930 were marked by the rise in the Serie B, but also by the search for a place, since the hospitality on the Allmend expired. A place was finally found behind the Historical Museum in Kirchenfeld , which also served FC Minerva to host its games.
FC Minerva
FC Minerva was also originally founded in 1914 under a different name, namely FC Kickers. But before they could start playing in Serie C, they also had to change their name, as there was already a FC Kickers Luzern .
In 1925, FC Zähringia and FC Minerva entered into an alliance that would make them FC Breitenrain almost 70 years later. Because when FC Bern left the space behind the Historical Museum mentioned above, the two clubs appeared as new tenants. In 1931, however, another change of location was necessary, as the current space was intended for the new building of the Natural History Museum. Therefore the two clubs moved to the Spitalacker . The following years were marked by constant ups and downs. Both teams played at times in the first division , but were relegated back to the fourth division for some time . In 1994 the two clubs merged under the name FC Breitenrain, which is still valid today. The current logo of FC Breitenrains consists of the two logos of FC Minerva and FC Zähringia. FC Breitenrain will play in the newly created 1st division promotion from the 2012/13 season .
