The SC Brühl St. Gallen is a Swiss football club from the city of St. Gallen .

history

20th century

The official founding of the club in Brühl was on March 27, 1901, but a Brühl team under the name Football Club Gymnasia is documented as early as 1890 . The name Brühl comes from the Celtic Pryel , which can mean fat meadow or wet meadow.

From October 5, 1905, the games took place on the Kreuzbleiche. Since 1909, after an interlude on the Weiherweid in St. Georgen, the games took place on what is now the Grossacker shopping center in the east of the city of St. Gallen.

In the 1914/15 season , the St. Gallen Swiss champions were the greatest success in the club's history. In 1922 the Englishman George Handley came to Brühl as the first professional trainer.

In 1926 the Krontal sports field was bought. 12 years later the stadium was expanded so that it could hold 4,000 spectators. After a grandstand fire on October 13, 1958, the Krontal was rebuilt in February 1960. During this time, the Brühl team played in the Espenmoos stadium of FC St. Gallen .

With a win in the last game of the 1972/73 season against FC Aarau , the NLB league could have been maintained, but the game was lost 3: 4 in front of 4100 spectators in Krontal. The relegation to the first division took place after 14 years of membership in the NLB.

After the 1979/80 season , Brühl and SC Zug had to make a first division relegation in a playoff among themselves. Up to the 118th minute it was 3: 3 in the game on a side pitch in Zurich's Letzigrund , before SC Zug scored a 4-3 victory after a set piece. The first relegation to the 2nd division was the result.

Already in the 1984/85 season Brühl managed to return to the first division under coach Isidor Cina. A year later, however, was relegated to the 2nd division. It was only after the 1987/88 season that Brühl managed to re-establish itself in the first division. In 1990, 1991 and 1995 Brühl played for promotion to the NLB, in the third attempt under coach Ernst-August Künnecke. The former coach of FC Basel was signed to SC Brühl as part of the farm team idea of FC St. Gallen. In the following year, however, Brühl rose again to the 2nd division. The idea of the SCB as the farm team of the FCSG was also off the table with the relegation. Since this descent, the SC Brühl played in the 2nd division.

21st century

From 1996 to 2010 SC Brühl played in the 2nd interregional league , the fourth highest league in Switzerland.

In 2006 the renovated and converted Krontal Stadium was renamed the Paul Grüninger Stadium in honor of the former refugee rescuer, St. Gallen police commander and president of SC Brühl Paul Grüninger .

After victories in the Cup qualification of the 2nd Interregional League against FC Dürrenast, SC Dornach and an away win at FC Breitenrain , SC Brühl played in the first main round of the Swiss Cup against Grasshopper Club Zurich in the 2008/09 season , losing the game however 0: 5.

The 2009/10 season ended the crowns in first place, which also meant promotion to the first division , the highest amateur class. For the following season, the former Dutch soccer player Erik Regtop was hired as a coach. This year Brühl was the "Swiss 1st League Champion" and was promoted to the Challenge League . This year there were again championship derbies against FC St. Gallen, which was relegated to this year. Brühl was bottom of the table in 2011/12 and was relegated to the newly founded first division promotion .

Rivalries

For a long time, SC Brühl was considered the club of the lower class, while FC St. Gallen and the now dissolved Blue Stars St. Gallen were considered to be the clubs of the upper class. Therefore, the Brühler could count on a large following. Due to this fact, some - especially older - St. Gallen residents still feel more connected to SC Brühl than to FC St. Gallen.
