The 2nd league is the sixth highest Swiss league in football . The 13 regional associations are responsible for their gaming operations. There are a total of 7 groups of 12 teams and 10 groups of 14 teams in the 2nd division throughout Switzerland (as of the 2017/2018 season).
While most regional associations only maintain a second league group, some larger associations (Bern / Jura, Zurich, Eastern Switzerland, Vaud) have two groups. The 17 group winners and the runner-up in the 2nd league group of the Central Swiss Football Association together make up the 18 promoted to the 2nd interregional league , while the weakest are relegated to the 3rd league .
