The 3rd league is the seventh highest Swiss division in men's football and the fifth highest in women's football . The regional associations are responsible for their gaming operations . There are a total of 43 male groups with a total of 561 teams throughout Switzerland (as of 2009/10).

The best can move up to the 2nd division , while the weakest move down to the 4th division (for an exception, see the Bern / Jura Football Association).
