The Glarus football club is a football club from Glarus ( Switzerland ). The first team was promoted to the 3rd league of the Eastern Switzerland Football Association (OFV) in the 2018/19 season .

history

1912-1919

FC Glarus was founded on January 22nd, 1912 as "FC Linth-Glarus" in the "Erlenbräu" restaurant in Glarus. FC Glarus became known when it was promoted to what was then the National League B in 1988. The coach was Wolfgang Frank, known from the German Bundesliga . Even today, many people from Glarus rave about the sensational away championship win at Joggeli in Basel against the traditional club FC Basel (then NLB) on August 13, 1988 (1: 2). The FCG was able to hold its own in the second highest division for four years.

The first board of the association consisted of Otto Kubli (founding president), Christian Bieri, Balthasar Elmer (actuary) and Fritz Karius. The founding members met again on February 2, 1912 , as Otto Kubli refused his presidency. Christian Bieri was elected as the new chairman for him. During the discussion about the playing field, it was agreed on the place next to the ice field "on alders". The board of directors set about creating statutes with great enthusiasm, based on those of FC Kickers Luzern .

On March 16, 1912 , the first competition was agreed with FC Wädenswil . However, the Glarus players waited in vain for the players from Wädenswil on the said date . It turned out that when this game was arranged, it was not clearly communicated where this game should take place. On the same date, the Wädenswil residents waited on their "Geeren" sports field for a visit from the Glarus people. The first game of FC Linth-Glarus (both called FC Linth for short) took place on Easter Monday on April 8, 1912 . The fourth team of FC St. Gallen was guests on the ice rink in Glarus and won with a high 0: 7.

On January 12, 1913, a meeting was held in Näfels , which was convened by FC Linth and interested footballers from Näfels. The question of a possible merger with the Näfelser Sportfreunde should be discussed, whereby one wanted on the part of the FC Linth to take the view that no pressure should be exerted on the Näfelser footballers if they wanted to found an independent club. The first attempt at a merger failed and the "Glarner Nachrichten" reported on March 23, 1913 : "FC Linth-Glarus has built a playground east of the Netstal-Näfels railroad tracks and will be playing a game against FC Näfels for the inauguration of the square tomorrow afternoon out." The game ended with a clear 13-0 win for FC Linth-Glarus. The idea of a merger of the two clubs remained awake and on December 7, 1913 , a joint meeting called in Näfels decided in principle to unite the two clubs.

The outbreak of World War I paralyzed football in Glarnerland as well. Various members had to do active service, the club's board resigned and the minutes said: "There was such a mess that nobody knew whether the club actually still existed or not."

1921-1930

On the "Fahrt" of 1916 , seven former members met in Näfels to re-establish FC Linth-Näfels. But the re-established association was not lucky either. The sporting activity in the years 1916 to 1919 remained very modest, and so it was not surprising that at the beginning of 1920 on the initiative of Dr. iur. O. Kubli, P. Cordillot, A. Hüsser and A. Hilger made a renewed attempt to re-establish their own association in Glarus. At the end of July, it was decided to create goal bars, purchase red / black jerseys and hold a competition against the second team of FC Chur . The game was just lost 4: 3 in Chur on August 1, 1920 . At the "Kilbi" the second leg against the Chur team took place on the ice rink and ended with a 4-2 win for the hosts in front of a sizable crowd of 400 people. A request to the municipal council to enlarge the ice rink and convert it into a gymnastics and sports field was unfortunately rejected in 1921 . The steadily increasing number of members allowed the formation of a second team. The general assembly also decided to change the club name to "Glarus Football Club".

Impressive numbers of spectators and attractive opponents were recorded on "Erlen" in 1921 . The match report from May 1, 1921 reads: "Generous advertising and beautiful regional parish weather attracted around 1,000 spectators to our field. The game against FC Young Fellows III began at 2:00 pm after the captains had exchanged flowers." On May 16, FC Glarus even invited to the first international game in Glarus . The third team from FC Konstanz were guests. In autumn 1921 the local council finally decided to make the necessary area in Buchholz available to the association. The tiresome question of space came to a happy end. A submission of November 10, 1922 in the "Glarner Nachrichten" shows how the relationships between the clubs from Glarus and Näfels were shaped at that time : "Let's put it bluntly, gentlemen from Näfels and Glarus! That was not a fair football game more, that deserves the name "Knebeli". That was spiteful, as if it were a boxing match. Football in the land of Fridolin would be better served if the two clubs in question did not meet for a certain period of time. "

With the creation of the new sports field one had expected an upward movement in the club, instead, unexpectedly, the opposite development occurred. A sharp decline in membership and - according to the minutes of the monthly meeting of September 1923 - emerging indiscipline of individual members were recorded. A decline in membership, sporting failures and an increasingly tense financial situation prompted the meeting of September 28, 1927 to deal with future participation in championship games. The board submitted a proposal to the meeting that should lead to a decision on the fundamental question: withdrawal from the championship or renewed merger with FC Näfels. After a turbulent discussion it was decided with 12: 3 votes to enter into negotiations with the "archenemy" who is in a similar situation. Unfortunately, from this period ( September 1927 to October 1930 ) no records have survived. This period includes the merger of the two clubs to form the "Glarner Sportclub Glarus-Näfels". For the second time, FC Glarus had to give up its independence due to disgusting circumstances. The merger was based on the idea that only united marching could preserve the cause of football in the canton of Glarus. But even this second merger did not bring the hoped-for upswing, as it did years before. The President's annual report for 1928 shows truly gloomy conditions: "The merger of the two former clubs of Glarus and Näfels did not produce the result that was promised. An increase in membership was probably the natural consequence of the association The internal cohesion, the camaraderie, the discipline among the members is not as it should be. Because of this incoherence, we have reached the point today where we must seriously raise the question whether the club can continue to exist or not. "

The resignations that followed quickly on the board of directors and increasingly greater disagreement between the former FC Glarus and FC Näfels members resulted in a collective resignation of the members resident in Näfels or a new founding of FC Näfels at the end of 1929 . FC Glarus was re-established immediately, and the newly formed team took part in the Serie D championship in the 1929/30 season.

With the regained independence, sporting success also returned: Group victory and contest in the promotional games. On March 16, 1930 , the Glarus team met FC Perlen LU in Buchholz and won 7: 2. A significant defeat with 1: 4 at FC Zurich III only one week later destroyed all hopes for promotion. The 1930/31 season also ended with the group victory for the Glarus. However, the third team of FC Zurich prevented the hoped-for promotion again. Despite the sporting successes, Captain Paul Vogel noted in his review of the season: "As always, training suffered from bad visitors, because a large number of our players have not yet recognized the value of conscientious, regular training."

1931-1940

The highlight of the 1931/32 season was undoubtedly a friendly game on June 5, 1932 on the Letzigrund in Zurich against the third team of FC Zurich as a prelude to the final of the Swiss championship between the Platzclub and Urania Geneva in front of over 4,000 spectators.

The 1933/34 season also went very well in terms of sport, as the group championship could again be fought. The group opponents were: Lachen II a, Lachen II b, Tuggen, Uznach, Schmerikon, Rapperswil II, Rüti II, Wetzikon II and Näfels. With two clear victories against FC Horgen III (7: 0 & 4: 1) the team secured the title of regional champion!

In the 1934/35 season, the club tackled the fourth division. In the higher division, too, the team lifted themselves to the top of the table, and after the end of the series of points there was a playoff between the equal points of FC Glarus and Sea-Boys Stäfa, which the Glarus unfortunately lost 3-2 after extra time. Group opponents were: Horgen II, Lachen II, Thalwil II, Schmerikon I, Wädenswil II and Stäfa I (Sea Boys).

A pleasing increase in active members made it possible for the club to provide two teams for the first time for the 1935/36 season (the association had 32 players registered for FC Glarus at that time). Once again, the first team finished the season behind the Sea Boys from Stäfa in the place of honor, and it was not to be any different in the following season. Nevertheless, the reporter at the time remained confident: "We will also become group champions in the 4th league one day, that's for sure. The watchword is sticking together and fighting!" In the club chronicle of 1935/1936 the player F. Streiff is mentioned by name, who joined FC Glarus from the USS Paris (who was pleasantly noticeable through intelligent positional play and his flat passings).

Again, FC Glarus (for the third time in a row) had to be content with the place of honor. In the club history it says: "So Stäfa has now become group champion, hopefully this time they will be promoted. We would be happy if they were gone".

A comprehensive revision of the Articles of Association was resolved at the 1937 Annual General Meeting . This version of the association's statutes remained in force almost unchanged until 1985 .

The anniversary on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the association was celebrated in 1937 with a simple, dignified celebration. The "Glarner Nachrichten" reported on July 4, 1937: "The main game between FC Adliswil I and a combined team FC St. Gallen I / FC Glarus I consisted of very good and very fair sport and ended 2-1 for the Adliswil team Our Glarus players complemented the team structure of the St. Gallen players quite well, with very few exceptions, and with a slightly better performance by the inner strikers, the victory could just as easily have gone to the Combined. The anniversary celebration at Hotel Löwen was simple, The honorary president, Dr. Kubli, described the development of the young grass sport since 1906 , spoke in a fine way about the value, meaning and nature of the soccer sport in particular and about the right one , healthy spirit of sport in general. What applies to every athlete in sport is also a prerequisite in daily un d public life: courage, drive, willingness to work, openness, understanding submission to a collective will, cooperation and camaraderie. " For the 1937/38 season, the goalkeeper Ernst Spalinger became a field player. Fritz Hauser was now in the gate for him. Ernst Spalinger was also given the honorable office of captain. However, since Fritz Hauser had to undergo meniscus surgery before the third game of the season, Ernst Spalinger returned for a total of 6 games.

3. FC Niederurnen I - 11 points
4. FC Buttikon I - 11 points
5. FC Lachen II - 9 points
6. FC Horgen II - 9 points
7. FC Wädenswil II - 2 points
Captain Ernst Spalinger stated in his game report for the last game of the season: "We are now, like many years, the" honorable "second place in the group. When will we finally win the group championship? ? "

The second team finished the 1937/38 season in 4th place out of a total of 7 teams.

1938/39 season
For the fifth time in a row, FC Glarus came 2nd in the 4th league. The captain, Ernst Spalinger, wrote in the match report for the last game against FC Schmerikon I: "We have only been second in the 4th division five times; dear comrades, now we have to go one step further".

The 1939/40 season was tackled with great ambition, as the club had found a good mix of younger and older players and wanted to finally get rid of the "curse" of second places. But the outbreak of war in September 1939 initially ruined all plans. Many active members had to do military service and the life of the club was severely affected. In the minutes of that time there are among others a. The following notes: "Since we are currently having difficulties to provide a team for the outstanding championship games, some players have requested that our team be withdrawn (March 1940). That it was still possible under the existing conditions to play with one team The remaining members deserve the full recognition of the remaining members. The team ended up in 3rd place in a group of five teams. It should be emphasized that all games played could be played with their own people The tempting offer from military players was not taken advantage of, while this business was in high bloom at neighboring clubs, but still did not always lead to the desired goal (August 1940). " It was very fortunate for the association that the real estate commission of the municipality of Glarus showed great understanding and never used the sports field for the so-called "cultivation battle".

The group opponents in the Linth group of the Zurich region were: FC Näfels I, FC Niederurnen I, FC Lachen II, FC Rapperswil I, FC Rüti I, FC Uznach I, FC Schmerikon I and FC Wald I. Der However, FC Glarus did not agree with the group size. The letter of protest against the group division being too large, however, was unsuccessful and now you had to prepare for a tough season for better or worse.
In the end the 5th place in the table resulted.

1941-1950

What was unsuccessful in countless attempts on the field can be achieved at the "green" table in 1942 : the long-awaited promotion to the 3rd division! Since FC Niederurnen, as group winners and promoted players, had benefited from the fact that they had few players in military service, the club's management approached the regional delegates' meeting with a request for an extraordinary promotion. The delegates complied with this request with a great deal more, and so the aspired ascent came about in this unusual way. In the minutes of the monthly meeting of August 1942 you can read: "The delegates' meeting of the Zurich region moved us into the 3rd league. Not out of pity or other heartfelt emotions, but because people elsewhere believe that we will not cut a bad figure. Now it's up to us to show that she was right. "

For many years, the club's management had always been concerned with the idea of starting a youth movement. For personnel and organizational reasons, however, this project always had to be postponed. Finally, on May 12, 1942 , JF Stöckli was able to present a draft of the junior regulations to the general meeting. After a detailed discussion at the following general meeting, this was approved and put into effect.

With the end of the Second World War , the club life and the game operations normalized, which was immediately reflected positively in the athletic performance. In 1945 the second team also rose to the 3rd division, and just a year later the first team won the group in the 3rd division for the first time in the club's history. On May 19, 1946 , FC Glarus and FC Rorschach met in "Buchholz" . With a clear 1: 4 success, the guests swung out above, which prompted the then Glarus captain to write the following report: "It should be anticipated that the locals seemed to be abandoned in this game by all good spirits. There was no question of a team game With a score of 0: 1, we couldn't convert a penalty, and a minute later Rorschach increased to 0: 2. One thing is certain: if our team can't play better than they did today, then it's better if we stay in the 3rd division and win games there than lose almost all meetings in the 2nd division. " On June 2, the Glarus team had to compete in the second team of FC Kreuzlingen . In the match report it says: "After the bad game against Rorschach , we looked forward to the meeting in Kreuzlingen with mixed feelings, as this team has proven to be the strongest in our promotion group. We do not remain in the dark about the outcome of today's meeting for long." With a 1: 4 deficit at the break, a runaway defeat was indeed looming, which ultimately came about with a score of 2: 7.

In the following season 1946/47 the group winners were FC Glarus. But this time too, the opponents proved to be stronger, although the Glarus team knew how to put themselves in the limelight much better than a year before. A clear 5: 1 home win against FC Rorschach (and thus the successful revenge for the home defeat a year earlier) was followed by a bitter defeat in Weinfelden (2: 5). Since each team recorded two points after the promotion poultry, the whole round had to be repeated. After an away win with 2: 4 goals in Rorschach, one could be very optimistic about a promotion. The final home game against FC Weinfelden was all the more sobering . A 1: 2 defeat dashed all hopes and condemned FC Glarus to make another attempt in the 3rd division.

With the end of the Second World War, the club life and the game operations normalized, which was immediately reflected positively in the athletic performance. In 1945 the second team also rose to the 3rd division, and just a year later the first team won the group in the 3rd division for the first time in the club's history. On May 19, 1946, FC Glarus and FC Rorschach met at "Buchholz" . There was no question of a team game With a score of 0: 1, we couldn't convert a penalty, and a minute later Rorschach increased to 0: 2. After the end of the championship workload for the 1947/48 season, the ranking list looked like this:

Once again, the Glarus eleven qualified for the promotion games to the 2nd division. In preparation for the difficult games to be expected, the team competed with the first division club FC Höngg on May 9, 1948 and easily won 4: 1. The match report says: " Höngg could have learned a lot from Glarus. We were almost too good again, hopefully the form will hold up to the finals."

On May 30, 1948 , FC Glarus had to compete at the Spielvereinigung Schaffhausen . Let's let the captain have a say: "... We change our clothes in the morning, every player is given a massage, the last advice given, some glucose given, and then we rush out onto the field. There, in the 5th minute, it burns Blazing fire in our penalty area! The half-right bangs from eight meters under de latte. Goal! But no! Our goalkeeper fists with a keen reflex in the corner. There is a large crowd in front of the goal, and Spalinger can push the ball over the line with his body: 1-0. But in the next minute the nervous referee whistled a small foul in the penalty area. The Schaffhauser sunk the penalty unsustainable. Our storm is now better again, and our center forward wins in a duel against the defender and shoots from 16 meters untenable in the corner: 2: 1 for FC Glarus. " After this hard-fought away win, the home game against Juventus Zurich followed a week later. No less than 1,500 spectators lined the playing field in "Buchholz". In the match book you can read: "The audience cheers on their own team frenetically. In the 25th minute free kick by Reutlinger, and Werner Spalinger forged the ball with his head in the other corner for a 1-0 lead. Shortly after half-time Kundert sends the Center forward, and it slams into the more distant corner to make it 2-0. Only two minutes later Oertli sends a corner, and Kundert chased it directly under the crossbar. Then the completely cleared Oertli can also score two goals. It was A nice game that thrilled the audience. After years we have now achieved our goal. May our work continue to prosper in terms of sporting togetherness. " The team put the crown on this success by winning the regional championship title in two superior games against FC Industrie Zürich. The following were involved in the greatest success in the club's history: Bättig, Romer, Deon, Zimmermann, Toscan, Reutlinger, Oertli, Kundert, Spalinger, Falabella, Michel, Brühlmann.

With a view to the coming season in the second division, the 1948 Annual General Meeting decided on a new expense regulation, according to which the club should pay all rail expenses for morning games, but each player had to pay CHF 1.50 for afternoon games. As a reward for the promotion, the club gave each player the cost of a trip to Italy in the amount of CHF 50.00; the board members traveling with them had to be content with half. An excerpt from the minutes from 1947 also testifies to the fact that financial resources were used sparingly in the days of sporting success: «... the board proposes compensation of CHF 150.00 for the coach, which in the event of a promotion to the 2nd division would amount to CHF 200.00 is to be increased, but E. Spalinger is to lead the training for another two years. The discussion about it was actively used and after some back and forth the proposal of the board was accepted. »

The first season in the top regional class was played by FC Glarus in the group of the Zurich region, and with a 4th place they achieved a good placement.

In the 1949/50 season, the (unpopular) division of the Glarus clubs from the Zurich region to the area of the Eastern Switzerland Football Association (OFV) took place. The team started the new season with great aspirations in the tried and tested " World Cup system offensive". With five wins in a row - including a 2-1 win against cantonal rivals FC Näfels - the start of the season was perfect. A 0: 1 defeat in the last game of the year at FC Gossau spoiled the team's title of winter champion. Another 0: 1 defeat against FC Frauenfeld made the chances of winning the group finally dwindle in the spring. Ultimately, the Glarus team finished third with 28 points from 20 games (2-point rule). The Spiko President at the time was apparently not blinded by the good ranking: «… points to the poor training attendance of the first team and mentions that in the next year only those players should be considered who train seriously and whose performance justifies it, to play in the first group »(minutes of the annual general meeting 1950).

The start of the 1950/51 season was not very promising. The team captain stated: “Glarus is still a long way from reaching last year's form, and not everything seems to be OK in terms of fitness either. The Spiko (game committee editor's note) would do well to once again remember the good times when the players voluntarily attended training regularly and were more delighted. " The team then made the second half of the season enjoyable, and a fourth final rank was quite impressive. For the coming season, the group was already flirting with the group championship, although at the 1951 Annual General Meeting it was said that "... standing still is a step backwards, and the first team has not seen any progress for years." The second team, according to the protocol the “problem child” of the club, had to accept relegation to the 4th division at the end of the season, “which is mainly due to the poor training attendance”.

1951-1960

A botched start in the second half of the season in 1951/52 threw the first team back to third place; the desired group victory was again missed. By a single point, the reserve team missed group victory and thus immediate promotion.

The season 1952/53 was characterized by the relegation campaign of the first team and the successful rise of the reserve team. After the duel between the bottom two in the first game in the spring of 1953, which was lost 4-2 in Widnau , FC Glarus temporarily took over the “red lantern”. An increase in form at the right time and a decisive 3: 4 in Näfels (which then fell into relegation) meant that the league was retained. How much the nerves of the players and the club's supporters were strained in the relegation battle is documented in the match report from May 3, 1953 of the match between FC Glarus and FC Kreuzlingen in front of 750 spectators: «Nothing succeeded! The opponent completely dominated. The spectators slowly noticed that the 1-0 lead would be difficult to maintain and did the stupidest thing in such fills by contesting all the decisions of the hitherto right-wing referee and organizing whistling concerts. Our players didn't get better, the referee really got worse. An unnecessary penalty equalized FC Kreuzlingen. The tumult broke out. Our players have now been cautioned for every minor comment and Spalinger has finally been suspended. We want to forget what happened next: 0: 3 forfait! "

At the general assembly of August 1952, the board of directors suggested to the assembly, “… that in the foreseeable future all players should once again purchase a uniform dress. This should consist of black pants, black socks with white flaps and a white shirt with a monogram. A request that the club should pay the acquisition costs for the players in the first team was clearly rejected. "

The sporty decline continued into the 1953/54 season. Already at the general meeting on October 17, 1953, critical tones were loud: “The President rebukes the mild atmosphere in the club. The whole context leaves something to be desired. The first team needed more preparation for the game. There is too much talk on the field, which only brings disrepute with the referees. " In the “Glarner Nachrichten” of November 23, 1953, the championship match between FC Glarus and FC Widnau (3: 3) reported: “The silence of the audience at the final whistle was a demonstrative expression of the disappointment. A clear victory was generally expected. But the big danger lay in the early 3-0 lead. One underestimated the fighting spirit, the toughness and perseverance of the opponent. " At the end of the preliminary round, the Glarus team were in the lower midfield with 10 points from 11 games. In the spring of 1954, the team slipped more and more into the area at risk of relegation and was only able to escape relegation in the very last game. According to the protocol, the second team “probably just solved it” and was relegated back to the 4th division after only one season.

So it came as no surprise that at the end of the 1954/55 season the decline of the first team, which had been emerging for two years, led to relegation from the second division. Even after the first championship game (2: 1 defeat at FC Ems ) the team captain had no idea what was promising: «… I would like to ask the question, against whom we actually want to score our points if we cannot even hold out against this weak opponent. » With only five points from ten games (2-point rule, editor's note), the team overwintered in the relegation area. The final phase of the championship turned out to be extremely dramatic. The game plan wanted the bottom two of the table, FC Glarus and FC Brühl St. Gallen II, to compete against each other in the “Buchholz” on the last day of the match . A draw would have been enough for the club to keep the league. The St. Gallen, on the other hand, absolutely had to win in order to force a play-off at best. The team from Glarus lost 1: 2, and a week later in Uznach the decisive game that had become necessary came about. This line fight is commented on by Captain A. Künzli: «This time the war of nerves was the same for both teams. From the whistle on we played well and had chances to score several goals. But instead of 3: 0 it was suddenly 0: 1! The half-left from St. Gallen no longer knew what to do with the ball and hit the ball diagonally in front of the goal, and to everyone's surprise the ball bounced off the post into the net ... Fortunately, we were soon able to equalize, and the score was a draw went into break. After the second goal for us, I didn't give Brühl any more credit, because up to that point we were playing pretty much superior. But then the Brühler turned up more and more, and we were under very strong pressure. Fortunately, it only hit us once, and after normal playing time it was 2-2. No sooner had Brühl played for extra time than a striker risked a long shot from 20 meters, which landed smoothly in the right corner of the goal. Took this goal and the belief in a victory, because now we should have scored two goals. The tiredness became noticeable, and Brühl was able to dictate the game to the end and increase the result to 5: 3. So we have to get down and start all over again. But it's not that bad when you consider how many other clubs have been relegated. "

With 14 points from 8 games (2 point rule, editor's note), the Fanion team secured the winter championship title in the first season after relegation. Optimism on the one hand and an old concern that recurs at irregular intervals on the other are expressed in the statements of the club president at the general meeting of February 1956: «The first team is doing very well and should be able to win the group with the same good camaraderie and willingness to play as in autumn . Afterwards we have to fight with all our might for a rise again. After all, this would mean pulling the rope again with regard to separation from the Eastern Switzerland region, because participation in the 2nd division is no longer an option here. " Due to three defeats in a row in the last championship games of the spring, the title, which was believed to be safe, was given away. The decisive defeat fell in the cantonal derby against FC Näfels (2: 1) and was therefore particularly painful: “… it's a shame that it had to happen in Näfels”.

In the 1956/57 season, Glarus played all home games in a row in the fall of 1956 , as the “Buchholz” turf was renovated in the spring. From these first seven home games only 8 points resulted (2 point rule, editor's note), whereby the defeat in the first game against cantonal rivals Niederurnen turned out to be particularly fatal. In the final statement, the Unterländer stayed ahead and relegated FC Glarus to the ungrateful second place in the table. The unbeaten completed second round matches raised hopes for a pleasant 1957/58 season.

With the conquest of the winter championship title, the team kept the expectations placed on them. In contrast to the previous year, the second half of the season was no longer so successful. In the report of the Spiko (Spielkommission note by the editor) of April 27, 1958, the decisive defeat in Schmerikon (3: 2) is moodily commented: “Illusions are part of people's daily bread. Without these, life would be too real, too sober, unimaginative and colorless. An example: You win three, five or seven games in a football game, you are lucky here and there, you feel like you are in “seventh football heaven”, you already see yourself as a budding group champion and from this illusion you wake up to the sober reality that the second from bottom of the group the more appropriate football plays than the front runner. " But harsh tones were heard at the annual general meeting of that year: “For example, it is questionable if first-team players are drunk a few hours before the start of the game, have to be kicked off the pitch by the referee because of constant complaints, and even juniors compete in competitions after a night. In the new season, no more concessions may simply be made. " After the end of the season, a “trip into the blue” gave the team the opportunity to forget the unpleasant course of the season. Via Wägital , Einsiedeln , Hütten to Finstersee and on via Menzingen , Baar , Zurich to Kloten , where the first flight attempts were made, the journey ended in Weisslingen , where a friendly game was played against the local club.

The season 1958/59 ended with the third final rank for the first team. The focus of that season, however, was the propaganda game in the spring of 1959 against the Young Fellows from Zurich, who were then still in the National League A (0: 4). This game brought the more than 1,200 spectators a reunion with the former FCG player Hans Reutlinger . The following is noted in the game report: "What was particularly astonishing was that Glarus was able to organize the game openly."

The President's annual report for the 1960 General Meeting states: “We started the championship with the first team with a lot of hope and optimism. We were puzzled by the fact that we were still without a coach. The completely wrong training of the coach, which was subsequently signed up, WK and the lack of interest of the players brought our Fanion team five consecutive defeats; a feat that has probably never been accomplished until today. The board felt compelled to hold a discussion with the players in the absence of the trainer and the Spiko (game committee's note) and to point out that things could not go on like this. For the first time in the club's history, we were forced to terminate the contract with a coach. Our honorary member E. Spalinger agreed to take over the training with immediate effect. This soon released the tension that had existed for some time within the club as a whole, and the first team soon distanced themselves from the red lantern. " Despite the false start, the team managed to make an advance to third place, which led the chronicler at the time to the statement: "... the group victory would hardly have been as easy as this time."

After completing the preliminary round of the 1960/61 season, the first team took first place with one point ahead of FC Wattwil and therefore harbored renewed hopes for promotion. In the all-important game of the second half of the season in Wattwil, the Glarus team lost to the hosts 3-1 and had to leave the group victory to the Wattwilers. The superiority of the two top clubs is illustrated by the table:

The series of places of honor in recent years suggested to the chronicler that the team might not want to move up until the anniversary year.

1961-1970

Excerpt from the minutes of the Annual General Meeting on July 14, 1962 : «In his annual report, the chairman looks back on the past season, which was all about the 50th anniversary of the association. The balance sheet is positive in all respects, as after a number of years we have once again managed to achieve complete success on the field with our active teams. We would like to express our thanks to everyone involved. The fact that two teams are promoted to a higher league in one season should represent a sporting highlight for a club like ours. "

After the first championship game against FC Bunt, which was successful with a score of 5: 2, the team captain reported: "Getting into the championship with a team whose average age is 19 is a bit daring." The fears should prove to be unfounded. On the contrary: with a two-point lead over their neighbors FC Netstal, the team wintered in first place in the table.

On February 11, 1962 , a junior in the first team made his debut in the friendly game at FC Wülflingen , who was to become a national player in a very short time: Fritz Künzli ! With a seven point lead over FC Netstal , the Glarus group won the group and thus qualified for the promotion games. In the first promotion game at FC Gossau , the Glarner did not get going and were clearly defeated 3: 1. In the following game against FC Vaduz II (4: 1), FC Goldach (2: 3 win for FC Glarus) and against FC St. Gallen II (2: 1), the team remained victorious, becoming regional champions and rose together with FC Goldach in the 2nd division. The “Glarner Nachrichten” reported in its June 4, 1962 edition: “After spending seven years in the third division, the first team of FC Glarus managed to move up to the second division again in the anniversary year of all places. Who would have thought that after the defeat in the first game in Gossau? Against FC St. Gallen II it became apparent that a very different wind blows in promotion games than in championship games. The midfield is always left to the opponent if possible, because this way the attackers encounter an organized defense network at the edge of the penalty area. Every football fan saw on Sunday that the focus in games like this is on toughness and the fight. "

After seven years in the 3rd division, FC Glarus rose again to the 2nd division. Mainly responsible were players like Fritz Künzli , Paul Fischli and Ernst Schmid.

The second team was in no way inferior to the Fanion team and achieved the group win with lots of wins and a single draw. With two successes over the reserves of FC Wattwil , she secured promotion to the 3rd division.

The newly graduated first team started the new season full of energy. With three effortless victories, she made it into the second main round of the Swiss Cup, where she then lost 3: 5 to the first division club FC Vaduz. What stood out in these first games was undoubtedly the enormous number of hits by the talented Fritz Künzli, whereby the guests from Ems in particular suffered: defeat in the cup game in the first main round with 10: 3 (Künzli's 5 goals alone) and two weeks later in the second championship game 7: 3, whereby the future national player managed the feat of scoring all seven goals. A notable third place in the promotion season was the yield. A few unnecessary point losses towards the end of the championship prevented an even better ranking. The reserves were apparently hopelessly at the bottom of the table after the preliminary round. A timely rebound in the spring secured the team's league maintenance. The anniversary game between the national league A clubs FC Basel and FC Luzern rounded off the official celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the club on a sporting level that took place at the beginning of the year.

The season 1963/64 brought the first team again the third place in the table, with some unfortunate point losses prevented a quite possible second place. The table looked like this:

  • 1.FC Rorschach 32 points (20 games)
  • 2. FC Rapperswil 27 points (20 games)
  • 3. FC Glarus 23 points (20 games)

With no fewer than 71 goals scored (most of all second division teams in Switzerland!), Fritz Künzli stood out with 28 goals alone and the Italian ball virtuoso S. Bua with 18 goals, the Glarner attracted wide attention.

Outside the region, too, people became aware of the unerring young people from Glarus. Several national league clubs soon expressed their interest in several players from FC Glarus, and in the middle of the 1964/65 season (which had started with the clear objective of winning the group), Fritz Künzli (to FC Zurich ), Paul Fischli (to the Young Fellows Zurich ) and Ernst Schmid (to FC Wettingen ) made the leap into paid football. Above all Fritz Künzli at FCZ (2 × Swiss champions / 4 × Swiss Cup winners / record scorer in the highest Swiss football league / 44 international matches and 15 international goals) and his long-term companion Paul Fischli (changed after his engagement with the Young Fellows at FC Basel , where he was five times Swiss champion and one time Swiss Cup winner) were among the best footballers in Switzerland at the time. Paul Fischli and Fritz Künzli grew up almost door to door in Ennetbühls and played football almost every day in the narrow streets or on the Buchholz lawn. In addition, S. Bua returned to Italy. Despite this huge bloodletting, the upside down team secured the place of honor with only one point behind. This second rank formed the best ranking in the club's history and was only to be achieved again a good 20 years later.

The loss of substance is nevertheless noticeable in the following season. A 7th place and thus a slide into the anonymity of the midfield was inevitable. In return, the reserves were able to look forward to a fine 4th place just like a year before.

After a season in the sign of the relegation battle (9th rank) both the first and the second team of the relegation expired at the end of the 1967/68 season. In the “Glarner Nachrichten” of June 12, 1968 it was said: “In Uznach, the playoff between FC Rapperswil and FC Glarus (2: 1) took place on Sunday, which had to determine the team that was to be relegated to the third division. Both teams had the same number of points in the regular season, in the last game Glarus had won 5: 4. The game unfolded in front of a large crowd, but unfortunately the floor was very slippery and the penalty area in particular was so soft that it was almost impossible to play regularly. The spectators remained decent on both sides despite banners and cowbells and applauded the actions of both teams. The game was even in the first half. Glarus had to accept the first goal because of a defensive error, then the penalty was equalized. In the second half Glarus had a little more from the game and threatened the Rapperswil goal several times. But with luck and skill, the Rosenstadt-based company was able to prevent further goals. The decisive goal fell quite unlucky when the defenders and the Glarus goalkeeper missed a cross from the right and a Rapperswiler headed the ball backwards into the goal. The team that lost to Rapperswil on Sunday is not as bad as you might think. We are even convinced that if Glarus had always played the way it did towards the end of the championship, the team would never have been relegated. We believe that if the team continues to train in the same way as at the end of the season, a promotion will be possible soon. " With this descent, a long period of unfulfilled hopes, disappointments, but also glimpses of light began.

The people in charge hoped for the desired promotion by installing young, talented players from the strong junior department. Only five players from the relegation team were still available in the new season. With a second championship rank, the newly formed team achieved considerable success and rekindled hopes for promotion for the 1969/70 season.

On September 8, 1971, the journal “Sport” read: “The third division club FC Glarus achieved something improbable: With only six registered teams, it managed to win the ZUS Cup. The two registered active teams (one third and one fourth division team each) became group winners and thus got four points each, as did the two junior B teams, and the A juniors finished second (3 points), the C juniors third. So: all teams contributed to this success. The ranking was as follows: »

The “Glarner Nachrichten” reported shortly afterwards: “… President W. Wyss emphasized with joy that FC Glarus had succeeded in bringing the ZUS Cup to Glarus for the first time in its 59th anniversary. After the missed promotion of both active teams, this is a small compensation ... " Although this success was undoubtedly a high priority for the club, the joy remained somewhat clouded by the non-promotion of the two active teams. A lack of attitudes on the part of some players and probably a certain overconfidence resulted in a sobering promotion coil. After a 4: 1 defeat at FC Flums and a 2: 4 bankruptcy on home turf against FC Herisau, the dream of being promoted again quickly vanished. A ray of light in the dark of the botched ascent poultry can still be found retrospectively from the temporal distance. The game report by Spiko (game committee's note by the editor) from the third promotion game at FC Frauenfeld II (1: 1) states: "Reisser was now the young Botteron on the right wing." For the first time, René Botteron (65 international matches / 2 international goals / 3 × Swiss football champions / 1 × Swiss Cup winner / first Swiss in a European Cup final) was mentioned a short time later, as was the case years before Fritz Künzli should have a lightning career at the Zurich City Club. The "Reisser" (René Botteron editor's note) on the right wing was to move to FC Zurich shortly afterwards, like Fritz Künzli ten years earlier. At that time, however, Fritz Künzli was no longer playing for the Zurich city club (he was playing for FC Winterthur at that time ).

1971-1980

In October 1972 the big hour of the third division club FC Glarus struck in the Swiss Cup on the Lucerne Allmend with the then B-division club FC Luzern. The following excerpts from the “LNN” match report record the turbulent events in the fight between David and Goliath: “Everything has to come to an end! With these comforting words, the third division footballers from FC Glarus, who have so far been so successful in the Swiss Cup, may have left the Lucerne Allmend. The result (18: 1) leaves no doubt. The fact that coach Schiesser's team was showered with applause from the audience after the referee's final whistle gave the guests a good rating. In fact, the Glarus team never tried to keep the looming defeat within tolerable limits with concrete football, with massive defense. The guests always played their game, they always tried their hand at scoring goals. The positive, constructive and offensive things that Glarus offered in the first half hour and sporadically until the final whistle was of astonishing quality and level for a third division team. "

The year 1972 gave the association unpleasant publicity beyond the region. As a result of alleged assaults by two Glarus players against the referee of the game between FC Glarus and FC Bütschwil, the club's officials found themselves unexpectedly embroiled in a legal dispute involving all instances of the OFV and the SFV that had been through the boycott of both of them Player ended up for 24 and 18 months respectively.

Fortunately, in the 1973/74 season, the focus was again on the action on the green lawn. After poor performance at the beginning of the season (probably also as a result of the turmoil described in the previous chapter and the transfer of René Botteron) with only seven points from eight games, an extraordinary series of eight games followed, which unexpectedly gave the Fanion team the group victory. But as so often before, FC Glarus stumbled in the promotion games, this time at FC Staad and FC Bischofszell.

A year later, the first team took pride of place behind the surprising FC Schmerikon and went into the 1975/76 season in good spirits.

The start of the season met expectations. The maximum number of points was achieved in the first four games, the subsequent point losses were not given too much importance. But the team slid deeper and deeper in the ranking to the bottom of the table. All rescue measures were unsuccessful. After completing the regular championship quota, the high-ranking team was tied with FC Walenstadt in second-last place. A play-off in Näfels had to decide the fate of both clubs.

At the same hour that the game of fate was played in Näfels, the second team of FC Glarus competed in the promotion game to the 3rd division at FC Weesen. Hardly anyone had any serious doubts about the Fanion team's relegation, and the game actually took a course that corresponded to the Glarus team. A high 5: 1 lead made the team feel safe, and the second team, which was based on the party's intermediate result in Näfels, “was allowed” to afford a defeat in Weesen, as membership of the third division seemed secured for the club .

What happened in the final phase of the game in Näfels will probably never be forgotten by any of the participants or the audience. Gate after gate, the devotedly fighting players from Walenstadt caught up. The Glarus, unable to counter the impending extension, actually had to accept the equalization in regular time. The resulting defeat after the penalty shootout plunged the club into the depths of the 4th division.

From today's perspective, this sudden decline also had its positive sides. He caused the association to go deeper into itself, to think about mistakes made, inadequate structures, etc. and to draw appropriate conclusions.

After an impressive race to catch up in the second half of the 1975/76 season, the graduated B-Juniors managed to stay in the league brilliantly, and the A-Juniors made it into the elite category. As a result, this team got caught up in the impending relegation of the Fanion team from the 3rd division, and the most talented players ultimately had to support the first team in the (unsuccessful) fight against relegation.

At the end of the 1976/77 season, the club was back in the 3rd division. Both the first and the second team were group winners of the 4th league, and the nominally second team rose after a deserved 2-1 success against FC Ebnat-Kappel in the promotion game on neutral in Näfels.

There was also something positive in the annual report of the club president at the time: «To begin with, I can say with full conviction that we had an extremely lucky hand with the election of P. Grossrieder. A longstanding club postulate to finally hire an external coach has proven itself in every respect. We felt the "new" wind we had hoped for on various levels. I would even like to claim that the "new" wind whistled around our ears every now and then like a soothing and refreshing hurricane. "

In the following year, the oldest juniors were able to fully defend their interests and also won the regional championship title and thus the longed-for promotion to the Inter-A-II category. Thus, FC Glarus, which has just been promoted to the 3rd division again, has no fewer than two interregional teams!

At the end of the 1977/78 season, FC Glarus - traditionally - knocked on the door of the 2nd division again. Equal on points with FC Näfels they finished the championship in first place. After the arch-rivals were beaten twice in the point round, the Unterländer retained the upper hand in the decisive game in Uznach after a controversial fight with 1-0. This was the third time that a play-off on Uznach soil had been canceled to the disadvantage of FC Glarus: two relegations from the 2nd league and this time the prevented group win.

A third and two second places in the following years document the annual - and, as in the previous years - futile efforts to achieve the goal «2. League". At the same time, a certain flattening of the vigor was noticeable in the first few years after the resurgence. The President's 1980/81 annual report reads: «... all players must be aware that no miracles will happen in the future either and that only hard work and, above all, self-criticism and self-discipline will lead to success. However, the board is willing to free the club from its lethargy and to secure the future of FC Glarus with new impulses and methods that are new for our club. "

Only at the end of the 1978/79 season could the B-Juniors (last promoted in the 1974/75 season) no longer hold in their league (Inter-B-II category). The A-Juniors rose in the 1979/80 season from the Inter-A-II category.

1981-1990

The club management finally wanted to force happiness with an “escape to the front”. With the commitment of the former Bundesliga player Helmut Huttary as a player-coach, the club deliberately went new - also financial - ways. This investment paid off in two ways after a short time: reaching the 3rd main round of the Swiss Cup against FC Zurich and promotion to the 2nd division at the end of the season. After a high 5: 1 in the first promotion game against FC Landquart, a 2: 2 at FC Schaan was enough to regain a “place in the sun” after 14 long years of underclassiveness.

On September 26, 1981, the guest in the Swiss Cup on the new “Buchholz” facility was Swiss champions FC Zurich. Traumlos brought the ambitious third division club to the National League A club with which FC Glarus is particularly connected through its two biggest sons Fritz Künzli and René Botteron. In the “Glarner Nachrichten” of September 28, 1981, this event, which was brilliantly successful in every respect, was reported as follows: “As expected, the Swiss Meiser qualified for the next round against the host FC Glarus. FC Glarus, which was the last third division club to qualify for this third main round, was able to stand up to the overpowering opponent for over an hour, but then the Zurich team scored the goals that corresponded to the course of the game. With a unified team performance, the Huttary-Elf said goodbye to the current cup competition and the enthusiastic audience. " The game, which also served as the inauguration game for the newly built SFG system, in front of around 3,000 spectators (up until then the FC Glarus audience record) ended with the honorable result of 0: 5.

The club entered the first season in the "upper house" with high expectations. In the annual report 1982/83 of the TK President, the course of the season is recorded as follows: «Through newspaper articles with the headlines« Soon in the first division? » our team moved up to a serious contender for a top spot even before the season started. The rather mediocre results of the preparatory games couldn’t do anything to the arrogance that was sometimes evident, and so this second division adventure started. The first six championship games, which were all lost, could be dubbed “Back to Reality”, and they were already five points behind the secure 10th place in the table. After nine games the situation was as follows: 0 wins, 2 draws, 7 defeats with 10:25 goals. "

The club officials saw themselves forced to act and waived the further services of the player-coach. The team had also understood the seriousness of the situation and showed improved commitment and more discipline. The match before the winter break against FC Chur was proof of this . “Sport” read: “The high of FC Glarus continues: In the last match of this year, the Glarus team managed another surprise. In a dramatic and hectic game, Glarus got up in the final phase and turned a 1: 4 deficit into a 5: 4 win within just 25 minutes. " With 17 points and a saving 8th place in the table, the club still retained its league membership.

Under new management (player-coach Th. Leemann), reinforced by several moves and with regained self-confidence, FC Glarus tackled the dreaded second season and set a goal for a top midfield position. The preliminary round went well beyond expectations. With only one point behind Leader FC Bad Ragaz, the team spent the winter in second place in the table, so that the club management had to deal with the idea of a possible promotion to the top amateur league (1st division)! After 16 of 22 games, FC Bad Ragaz, USV Eschen / Mauren and FC Glarus were tied at the top of the table. In the preliminary game against Eschen / Mauren, the nerves of the players did not hold up. In the last 10 minutes of the game, the guests transformed a 1-0 lead of the club into a 1: 2 win and thus pushed the locals out of the decision to win the group. The third final ranking with 27 points from 22 games (2 point rule, editor's note) nevertheless meant an excellent performance and at the same time fueled high expectations for the following season.

The 1984/85 season was tackled by the first team under the leadership of former Bundesliga star Wolfgang Frank . With professional - and tailored to our amateur conditions - methods began a new, successful era for FC Glarus. We take from the annual report 1984/85 of the TK President: «After four initial wins, our Fanion team lost almost 0: 1 against the newcomer FC Balzers, before another point had to be given up against FC Niederurnen. At the end of the preliminary round, our team was two points behind FC Balzers in an excellent second place with just four loss points. At the start of the second half of the season they defeated FC Bad Ragaz, and thanks to the Liechtenstein team's first defeat, Glarus caught up to the top. The unexpected defeat at FC Rapperswil was followed by clear success in the cantonal rival derby, before the possible group victory was wasted within seven days (three draws in three home games). With 32 points from 22 games, our team finished its third season in an excellent second place. "

In the wake of the first team, the reserve team, which was making another attempt at promotion in the 4th division, knew how to positively stage itself. After the winter break, apparently hopelessly ranked four points behind the leader, the team improved enormously in the spring and achieved seven wins from eight games. With this series of successes, the reserves closed up to FC Weesen and defeated this opponent in the decisive game for group victory and thus promotion to the 3rd division with 4: 2.

The 1985/86 season was dominated by the three-way battle between FC Chur / FC Buchs / FC Glarus. Only in the final phase of the championship did the Glarus team recognize the superiority of the later promoted FC Chur. The high point of the season was undoubtedly the party FC Glarus - FC Chur (2: 1) at the end of October 1985. The “Glarner Nachrichten” reported on this game in its October 29, 1985 issue: “Sensation on the Buchholz sports field before 1,000 completely enthusiastic viewers. In a dramatic, playful high standing and extremely fast game right up to the end, the Frank-Elf swung deservedly on top. With her irrepressible fighting spirit, she put the hitherto undefeated leader under pressure from the start. Driven by Beat Grossmann, who was playing a great game and without a weak point, the Glarus people by no means brought badly playing Chur to their knees. Once again it showed how beautiful football could be. Thrilling duels, tingling goal scenes and a great atmosphere probably made most of those present forget the biting cold. " Literally at the last minute, the second team was able to evade relegation.

For the 50th anniversary of FC Glarus, the club and its first team rose from the 3rd to the 2nd division in 1962. After the successful last few years with several places of honor, the club clearly set itself the goal of advancing to the highest amateur class in Switzerland for the first time. Should luck be on the side of the Glarnern in the anniversary year? After FC Chur, the dominant team of the previous season, rose in the first division, FC Glarus had legitimate hopes for promotion. From the first, a duel between FC Glarus and FC Balzers for group victory emerged. Always at the top of the table, the people of Glarus always felt the breath of the persecutor from the principality on their necks. The direct encounter on the Landsgemeinde Sunday 1987 in Glarus had to bring the preliminary decision. Under the most adverse external conditions (snow, rain, wind) the Frank-Elf deservedly won 1-0 and cleared the last stone on the way to group victory. The top of the table had the following picture after the end of the season:

  • 1. FC Glarus 22 13 9 0 45:12 35
  • 2. FC Balzers 22 12 5 5 50:27 29

After the last championship game, the “Glarner Nachrichten” read: “This team should be allowed to achieve its big goal of advancing to the top amateur league. There is no doubt about the morale of the players, too often during the long season they have shown that they have matured and that they can deliver top performance at the decisive moment. Let's hope that a lot of battle strollers and real fans will support FC Glarus in the first decisive game for promotion on Sunday morning. Hopp FCG! "

The promotion poultry with the teams FC Seefeld Zurich, FC Tresa and FC Glarus, two of which were eligible for promotion, began with the match between FC Seefeld and FC Glarus (0-2 victory). With the declared aim of getting a big step closer to the promotion of FC Seefeld, which is classified as the weakest team of the Poule in terms of paper, with a win or at best a draw, the Glarus team went into this game. The press reports of this dispute were exuberant: "FCG: That was a magnificent achievement!" («Glarner Nachrichten») and «Glarus looked sovereign. Seefeld didn't stand a chance. " ("SPORTS"). Furthermore: “A Super-FC-Glarus decided the first promotion game to the first division, which was on a good level and was eagerly awaited. It was an FC Glarus that knew how to put all its advantages into practice and that soon seemed to rob the city of Zurich of their dreams of promotion. Georg Zug in the 7th minute of the first half and Gianni Di Renzo after five minutes in the second half were worried about the goals, and goalkeeper Zoran Markov saved his team from the psychologically important equalizer after a penalty type whistle in the twelfth minute. The two picket shots by Georg Zug and Gianni Di Renzo show how well deserved the Frank-Elf win is. " («Glarner Nachrichten»).

“SPORT” reports on the special ambience in the Oerlikon Neudorf Stadium: “… All hell broke loose in Neudorf from this point on. There was a reason for this: Seefeld came to anything but enjoy a home advantage. It made the impression that Glarus could have attracted the entire football community of the canton to the city. The spark of enthusiasm jumped from the grass onto the fans and back again. " With this well-deserved away win, the Glarner Elf created an excellent starting position for the game against FC Tresa a week later in their home town of Buchholz. Even a draw or, in the worst case, a 0: 1 defeat would have been enough for promotion. On the other hand, with a point win or a narrow defeat, the guests were also able to create a good starting position for the last game between FC Tresa and FC Seefeld. Under these tactical prerequisites - both teams must have a dosed offensive - the game in «Buchholz» was played in front of around 1,500 expectant spectators. The goalless final result was almost a logical consequence of the pressure of expectations on both sides. Comment by the “Glarner Nachrichten”: “A downer fell after the all-important promotion game in the Glarner goblet: the loud whistles of the dissatisfied spectators during the last 12 minutes. But it would be wrong to measure the Glarus people on these minutes. They have shown during the long season that they can play football and they have achieved their goal - they are in the first division. The joy after the cramped 0-0 against Tresa is therefore quite justified. The audience saw a match that lived mainly from the fight. However, there were only a few playful highlights. The tactics were too much in the foreground for both teams. The Ticino consistently stuck to their defensive concept once they had embarked on and played extremely disciplined for over 90 minutes. " FC Glarus was the first club in Glarus to make it into the top amateur class (1st league, editor's note). At the same time, the club made the best anniversary present for itself. The long-term, single-minded efforts of the club management, the team and those responsible had led to the happy goal.

The really big rise began with the commitment of Wolfgang Frank for the season 1984/85. As the first major success, he led the club to the first division just for its 75th anniversary (1986/87 season) and only one year later (1987/88 season) to the national league B. FC Glarus had the club within two seasons Made the jump from the 2nd division to the National League B.
FC Glarus took first place in the 1st division group 4 (13 wins, 11 draws, 2 defeats / goal difference: 32:12).

In the promotion games to the NLB, FC Glarus first had to face FC Châtel-St-Denis (3-0 win / 1-1 draw). In the second round of promotion, FC Glarus had to face Urania-Genève-Sport (0-0 draw / 1-2 defeat). Urania-Genève-Sport was then established as a promoter to the NLB. FC Glarus got another chance in the third round of promotion against FC Rorschach (3: 1 win / 5: 1 win). Thus, FC Glarus rose to the NLB together with FC Emmenbrücke and Urania-Genève-Sport.

And this NLB time is closely linked to a man without whom the Glarus team would never have advanced to the second highest Swiss league. Fritz “Ypsch” Hösli. «Ypsch» Hösli, who died in 2010, made a difference at FC Glarus. The gentle term for "everything thrown overboard" is moving. No stone was left unturned after Hösli took over the presidency of the city club in 1985. He ran the club ambitiously, enthroning the FCG like a patron. With «Ypsch» Hösli and Wolfgang Frank as coaches, the country club went up. The march through from the 2nd division to the National League B also demanded its price. “Ypsch” once said, and he liked to tell, mainly in his “Waage” restaurant, preferably upstairs at the regulars' table, that Wolfgang Frank only stayed in Glarus after promotion on the condition that he was awarded a top goal-getter for the NLB championship receive. And what did «Ypsch» Hösli do? He drove to the bankrupt MSV Duisburg, leafed 35,000.00 francs on the table and took Georg Zug with him to the Glarus region . The passion with which «Ypsch» ran FC Glarus had far-reaching consequences for the «man with sole entertainment value». The annual budget of the NLB Club of around CHF 600,000.00 could never be covered. Hösli had to constantly inject money himself. During his ten-year presidency he buttered around 1.5 million francs into the club. In addition, the commitment of the two-time World Cup finalist with Germany (World Cup 1982 + World Cup 1986), Hans-Peter Briegel, as FCG player-coach in 1989 should not have been cheap.

In the NLB, the matches against the greats of Swiss football, FC Basel and FC Zurich , were certainly among the highlights. The 2-1 away win at the “Joggeli” on August 13, 1988 is still remembered by many people in Glarn today. The sport information wrote in their match report: “The victory of the Glarus in the large St. Jakob Stadium was even deserved after 90 minutes due to their combative attitude and solid performance in defense, although it came off happily considering the late goals. Lötscher only equaled Ralph Thoma's lead in the 82nd minute, Zug scored the winning goal just 120 seconds before the end. " Lötscher only came on the field for Biasco in the 63rd minute. Like Biasco, Koni Gabriel did not experience the final whistle on the pitch. After getting in too hard against a Basel resident, sinner Gabriel was sent to the cloakroom by Ref Amherdt (a priest by profession). “To win against FC Basel was probably unimaginable for most. Now we have achieved this sensation. This victory will definitely go down in the history of FC Glarus », dictated Wolfgang Frank to the reporter Angelo Umberg of the Glarner-Nachrichten in the notepad.

In their first year in the NLB, the people of Glarn never felt like cheering. So they lost in Letzigrund against FCZ with 1: 7. "This Kantern defeat came about exclusively because the Glarner opened their until then homogeneous, well-staggered defense after the 1: 3", analyzed the "Glarner Nachrichten". Basel returned the favor in Buchholz for the “historic” home defeat with a 3-0. Due to the uncomfortable situation in the table (last of the NLB-Ostgruppe) Glarus signed the Dutchman Willy Scheepers in November 1988 . The then 27-year-old Libero was supposed to stabilize the defense. Scheepers started his career at PSV Eindhoven . From last place, the Glarus could not break away with Scheepers and were relegated to the relegation round. In winter, the builder of the Glarus football miracle, Wolfgang Frank, left the promoted team and moved to the NLA club FC Aarau . Glarus released its “wonder man” despite a contract that ran until the end of the 1991/92 season. Frank had started the season as a player-coach, but after a complicated broken leg in the fourth championship game, he only acted as a coach. Frank's successor was Peter Stubbe. The Stubbe from Bochum looked back on a worldwide activity in 1988. The Stubbe, known as the «fireman», did a great job, leading Glarus confidently through the relegation lap, which it finished in 1st place.

In the 1990/1991 season they finished 10th in the table after the qualifying round and had to compete again in the NLB relegation round. This finished the Glarus on the penultimate (fifth) place in the table, which resulted in two playoffs against Montreux-Sports for relegation (the winner remained in the NLB, the loser had to relegate to the 1st division). FC Glarus won the first leg 2: 1, the second leg lost the Glarus 1: 3. Thus, in 1991, after a total of three seasons in the NLB, FC Glarus would have been relegated to the first division again. After the play-off it came to light that Montreux-Sports will not receive the license for the NLB season 1991/1992, which means that FC Glarus remained in the NLB.
In the qualifying round, Markus Ott scored 10 goals for FC Glarus, making him third on the list of goalscorers.

After a total of four seasons in the National League B, Glarus was relegated to the first division in 1992 . You could stay there until 1997. The relegation to the 2nd league was followed by two promotions to the 2nd Interregional league in the new millennium, which ended after only one season (2003/2004 & 2007/2008) with relegation to the 2nd regional league of the OFV.

FC Glarus struggled in the first division. He only reached third from bottom of the table (7 wins, 6 draws, 13 defeats / goal difference: 37:60). So he had to be relegated. There they lost first to the second division club FC Freienbach 1: 2 (they played in Tuggen). Then you had to play the last relegated against the third from last placed from Group 2, FC Burgdorf (2-0 win / 2-2 draw).

This was the last season in which the 2nd division was the fourth highest division in the Swiss football system. The association had decided that at the beginning of the 2000/2001 season between the 2nd league and the 1st league, the 2nd league Interregio will start playing. Eight teams from the 2nd league from the Eastern Switzerland Football Association (OFV) were allowed to start in the first season of the 2nd Interregio league. This meant that the first four placed in the 2nd league group in the OFV were promoted to the 2nd league Interregio. FC Glarus reached 8th place in the table with 28 points from 22 games. There were seven points missing for promotion to the 2nd Interregional League.

At the end of the season, 8 points were missing from the saving bank (relegation) (6 wins, 5 u ndecided, 15 defeats / goal difference: 32: 60)

In autumn a new second team from FC Glarus organized itself. After years without a "reserve team", FC Glarus was able to provide a second team again from January 2008. The initiator of this team was Marcel Hefti. At that time he could still have played with the A-Juniors (until summer 2008), but since the A-Juniors had an enormous number of players this year and the coach clearly preferred the younger age groups, Marcel Hefti looked for another Opportunity to see how he and his colleagues could play football. For example, in the second half of the 2007/2008 season, FC Glarus entered the championship events of the 5th league with a second team. The young team (the majority of the team consisted of the oldest A-Juniors born in 1988) already showed in spring 2008 that the fourth division should be the goal in the near future. It is true that they still had to pay a little apprenticeship with a few defeats. Since the team only played the second half of 2008 anyway, it was clear from the start that the first six months would be an apprenticeship year. The team scored 9 points from the 9 games (2 wins, 3 draws, 4 defeats / goal difference: 12:21). The coach of this team was Peter Hefti (junior coach legend of FC Glarus / father of Marcel Hefti / honorary member of FC Glarus).

In the 2008/09 season, after relegation from the 2nd Interregional league, FC Glarus was back in the fifth-class 2nd regional league. He reached the 8th final rank (8 wins, 6 draws, 8 defeats / goal difference: 40:45).

At the end of the season, FC Amriswil was promoted to the 2nd Interregional league, while FC Eschenbach and FC Schmerikon had to go into the 3rd division.

The second team started their first full season after the reorganization in winter 2008. The young team around coaching legend Peter Hefti was able to establish itself in the front third and thus reached 3rd place in the table. Only four points were missing for promotion to the 4th division (11 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats / goal difference: 45:20).

In August 2008, FC Glarus expanded its range of juniors. Under the idea and direction of Reto Knobel and Marc Eigenmann, it was now possible to create a team for the G-Juniors. The first G-Juniors of FC Glarus were: Loris Micheroli, Nico Künzler, Manuel Duljaj, Hajriz Duljaj, Sam Kormann, Liam Pozyy, Jarno Zysset and Sandro Rufibach.

FC Glarus finished 7th in the 2nd division (regional). Player coach this season was Alessandro Cescato. He was supported by Massimo Fiorenzi as assistant coach.

The team finished the first half of the season in a relegation zone with just eight points (two wins and two draws). Thanks to a great second half of the season, relegation could even be secured before the last match day. The season was marked by long-term injuries to three top performers: Simon Schiesser (nominal captain), Tobias Schlup and player-coach Alessandro Cescato.
FC Glarus won 8 games, drew 3 times and lost 11 games (goal difference: 39:42). FC Altstätten was promoted to the 2nd Interregional league. FC Au-Berneck 05 and FC Staad were relegated to the third division.

The second team started the new season with great ambitions. The result was the very good 2nd place in the 5th league. Again, the ascent was missed by 4 points (10 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats / goal difference: 48:20).

After more than a decade in the 2nd division (regional and interregional), relegation to the 3rd division was at the end of the 2010/11 season. As since 2006, Alessandro Cescato was responsible as coach. He was supported by Massimo Fiorenzi as assistant coach.

On April 16, 2011, Alain Hofer (then 17 years old) made his debut in the 1st team in the 1: 2 defeat in Weesen.
While the first team had to cope with relegation, the second team was able to celebrate promotion from the 5th division to the 4th division. With 8 points ahead of second place in the table (FC Linth 04), there was not only the frustration of the first team but also something to celebrate at FC Glarus (13 wins, 2 draws, 3 defeats / goal difference: 60:18).

2011-2020

Ironically, in the anniversary year 2012, FC Glarus had to relegate to the 4th league. Despite seven wins and four draws, it was only enough for the last (12th) place in the table in the said season - which meant relegation to the 4th division. If you look at this table again, you can see how unfortunate this descent was. The chronicler may at least not remember a season in which the two relegated players could each win a third of their games and still had to go down a league. There were just seven points between the 3rd placed and the 12th placed. The fact that this happened in the anniversary season (100 years of FC Glarus) was all the more dramatic.
Gerold Bisig took over as coach.

On August 6th, 2011 Elija Pozzy made his debut in the first team at the Cup game in Untervaz at the age of 17 (1: 3 away win).

While the first team had to cope with relegation from the 3rd division to the 4th division, the second team was able to celebrate relegation in the 4th division. With 9 wins, 2 draws, 9 defeats (goal difference: 41:41), relegation was never in danger. In the end, they had 18 points ahead of the relegation zone.

The 100th birthday was celebrated with a gala evening on Thursday May 31st, 2012 in the Schützenhaus restaurant in Glarus. Salvo Ingrassia hosted the evening. The gala evening began after an aperitif with a speech by Landammann and FCG member Andrea Bettiga. Bettiga said he was proud to be part of FC Glarus, as he had been able to spend a few good hours with his hobby. The highlight in 2008 was definitely winning the Swiss championship among the veterans. The current FCG President Renato Micheroli then spoke. He is also a child of FC Glarus and spent his junior years there and was able to contribute to success as an active footballer in the club's most successful years, namely the promotion to the then NLB. The former FC Junior Salvo skilfully led through the program on this gala evening and caused a few laughs with his sayings. The poetry slam artist Kilian Ziegler alias La Vache Kili also made people laugh. He knew how to draw the audience to his side immediately with his sentences and words. Be it as a "Roger Federer" admirer or as a simple student who prefers to do nothing and even this very slowly. The president of the Glarus Cantonal Football Association, Hanspeter Blunschi, also spoke up and handed over a check on behalf of the association and the Glarus football clubs (Linth04, Netstal, Schwanden and Rüti). It was also Blunschi who announced the dance group "The Diamonds" as a surprise guest. "The Diamonds" are eight young, former gymnasts of the rhythmic gymnastics Glarnerland. It was fascinating to watch these gymnasts and the young women were bid farewell on stage with a standing ovation. Then it was Salvo's turn, who was able to encourage the invited guests to sing along with his FCG hit “Eimal isch kei Mal”. This song was composed by Salvo on the occasion of the promotion to the NLB in 1988. Now Christian Marti, the mayor of Glarus, gave his laudation. With Renato Micheroli, President, Reto Knobel, Vice President, Daniel Moro, Junior Chairman, and Sabrina Keinersdorfer, OK gala evening, he brought four FCG components onto the stage. Marti is happy that FC Glarus, the first soccer club from the canton, can celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Jürg Fritsch, President of the Referees of the Football Association of Eastern Switzerland, also delivered greetings and a check for the junior division on behalf of the OFV. Fritsch hopes that Glarus can hold onto the 3rd division. At the end, Salvo made a round of talks with four living FCG legends: Fritz Künzli was twice champion and four times cup winner with FC Zurich and four times top scorer of the then NLA. He also played numerous international matches for the Swiss national team. Paul Fischli even won the championship title five times with FC Basel as well as the Cup once and the League Cup once. Wolfgang Frank, the former Bundesliga professional, rose from the 2nd division to the NLB at a rapid pace with Glarus, first as a player-coach, then as a coach. With Ernst Wirz there was still a veteran coach on stage who always trained for Glarus. Wirz methods (especially the conditional ones) were very much feared, but popular.

The first year in the 4th division was still characterized by optimism. One held on to the trainer Gerold Bisig. Unfortunately it was only enough to finish third.
The players with the most appearances were:
- Carlo Stabile
- Lorenzo Greco
- Sandro Guler
- Fatos Hasani
- Gerold Bisig Junior
- Lars Widmer
- Patrick Widmer
Captain: Gerold Bisig Junior, Vice-Captain: Patrick Widmer

The season goal was the same every season: Promotion! As a result, the second 4th league year was rather disappointing. The fourth final rank did not correspond to the objective. The board of directors placed their trust in the trainer Gerold Bisig for another year. The players with the most appearances were:
- Carlo Stabile
- Ivan Laiano Ordonez (goalkeeper)
- Robin Green
- Fatos Hasani
- Simon Schiesser
- Nico Castelluzzo
Captain (first half): Gerold Bisig Junior, Vice-Captain (first half): Patrick Widmer
Captain ( 2nd round): Simon Schiesser, Vice-Captain (2nd round): Carlo Stabile

For the new season (2014/2015) a completely new board took over the management of the club. This new board of directors, which is still the same today (only Raphael Horath and Manuel Lorente have been added over the last few years), first had to get used to it. This took time and this was also noticeable in sports.
The third 4th league year was very unsatisfactory in terms of sport. The community rival FC Netstal was able to celebrate promotion to the 3rd division, while FC Glarus had to be happy that it did not have to enter the 5th division (9th final rank). The new board introduced new structures and hardly left a stone unturned. In addition, with Simon Schiesser, the identification figure of the 00s (long-time regular player and captain of the 1st team) took over the coaching position. The players with the most appearances were:
- Carlo Stabile
- Gianluca Zimmermann
- Giovanni Bisanti
- Pascal Stadler
- Philip Petruzzi
- Robin Green
Captain: Pascal Stadler, Vice-Captain: Carlo Stabile
On the second match day (08/27/2014) today's captain Gianluca gave Zimmermann made his first team debut in the 4-2 away defeat in Wagen.

As every year, the traditional indoor tournament of FC Glarus took place in the Buchholz gym in Glarus at the end of January 2015. The E-Junior Rouven Dubacher was also in action at the time. His sister Shona Dubacher, who just a few months earlier had just missed the finals with her team on the occasion of the CS Cup, was sitting in the stands. Shona Dubacher had smelled a fuse. She wanted to play football. With this goal in mind, on the Saturday morning of the indoor tournament, she asked Daniel Moro (then junior chairman of FC Glarus) whether there was a possibility that FC Glarus could form a junior team? Up to this point in time, FC Glarus had never provided a women's team - only individual players began their football careers with the F-Juniors, but then had to play together with the boys. In the canton of Glarus, the clubs FC Schwanden and FC Linth 04 committed themselves to offering women's football. Shona Dubacher did not want to go to Schwanden or Näfels to play football. She wanted to practice her hobby in Glarus.

Daniel Moro assured Shona Dubacher that he would support her in her project if she could bring together enough players. She immediately began to talk to the sisters of FC Glarus Juniors, who were all sitting in the stands of the Buchholz gymnasium and “had to” watch their brothers, whether they would like to play football. She immediately found a few interested juniors. Especially in Tsomo Stähli she found a partner who drove this project with her. Together they designed advertising posters over the weekend, which they put up in the school. Shona's and Tsomo's zeal was contagious. On the same weekend, Shona's grandfather, Guido Zambelli (an experienced football coach), assured that he would take over the coaching position if enough juniors came together. In a report about the first junior team of FC Glarus in the “Glarner Woche” Guido Zambelli said: “If Shona (his granddaughter) asks, I can't say no”.

Daniel Moro also kept his word and organized a gym within a few days so that the first training session could start. Guido Zambelli welcomed six juniors in the first training session. With his great manner he was able to inspire the girls from the start, so that a few weeks later 17 (!) Girls attended the training. Another milestone was recorded when, in May 2015, Alessandro Cescato started his work with the juniors as the second coach alongside Guido Zambelli. With Guido and Alessandro, FC Glarus was able to provide its juniors with the best possible coaches. In the spring of 2015, the newly founded girls' team took part in a few E-Juniors tournaments in Glarus. The girls didn't do badly. Some established teams bit their teeth at the self-sacrificing junior women of FC Glarus.

2015/16 season In
terms of sport, things were now looking up again. The longed-for promotion was still a long way off (3rd place). The coaching position was taken over by the former NLB player of FC Glarus Orlando Pozzy. The players with the most appearances were:
- David Elmer
- Fabian Müller
- Giovanni Bisanti
- Sandro Guler
- Marco Cucinelli
Captain: Giovanni Bisanti

The euphoria among the juniors continued. Therefore, the coaches and the club management decided to register the girls' team in the D-Juniors 2nd class championship for boys from August 2015. There were also junior championships - but since it was not sure whether the juniors would be ready to show their bones every Saturday, it was decided to start the first season with the boys in the D-Juniors 2nd strength class so that they could in an emergency could also call in temporary help from the other two D-junior teams of FC Glarus, which would not have been possible in the junior championship.

In the first autumn season (2015/2016) the girls had to pay hardship (autumn season 2015: last place / 0 points / goal difference: 6:60). You could tell that they had only been playing football for six months and were therefore a bit inferior to the other boys' teams both tactically and technically. However, the stakes were right in every game and you could see progress week after week. The first championship game took place on August 15, 2015 in Rapperswil-Jona against the girls' team from the city of roses. This was clearly lost 7: 1. The first goal in the history of the junior team was scored by Riana Rhyner (penalty goal). In addition to clear defeats against the top teams, there were also narrow and annoying defeats. So they lost against the community rivals FC Netstal only 1: 2. And FC Schwanden could only celebrate a 3-1 victory. The coaching duo got the most out of their players. And from week to week the opponents had more trouble to show. For the spring season 2016, the trainers and the club management decided that they will compete again in the D-Juniors, 2nd class of boys. The opening game for the spring season was again played against the girls' team from FC Rapperswil-Jona. Half a year earlier they had lost 7: 1, but on April 2, 2016, the points were shared with an exciting 0: 0. Against FC Netstal, against which they lost just under 1: 2 in autumn, they shared the points on May 17, 2020 with another 0-0. In the end, the juniors won 2 points in the 2016 spring championship (goal difference: 3:42).

Since around 20 juniors were now attending the training, the coaching team decided that for the 2016/2017 season, the championship operation for the C juniors will be contested.

Season 2016/17
The upward trend was still evident, but the desired goal of “advancement” was unfortunately missed in the following season (3rd place). Orlando Pozzy held responsibility on the sidelines for another year. The players with the most appearances were:
- Antonio Alberto Herrera Profumo
- Berk Ates (goalkeeper)
- Giovanni Bisanti
- Mentor Boshtraj
- Sandro Guler
Captain: Giovanni Bisanti
On the first day of the season, today's regular Silas Gabriel lost 3-1 as a 17-year-old in Ebnat-Kappel his debut in the first team (August 15, 2015).

The experiences that the juniors were able to make in the first year against the boys in the D juniors now paid off. In the C-Juniors, the girls from FC Glarus were among the better teams and they were immediately placed in the front midfield (4th place out of 9 teams / 12 points / goal difference: 23:17). The team around the coach duo Cescato / Zambelli advanced to a really good indoor team over the winter. At the tournaments in which they competed, they were regularly in the finals and were also able to win some tournaments. The Glarus women were also able to finish the spring season 2016/2017 for the C-Juniors in the front midfield (4th place out of 8 teams / 12 points / goal difference: 22:17).

In the following year, FC Glarus was newly divided into the Rheintaler Group. But even in the "new" group they only reached third place in the table, like the two years before. For the 2017/2018 season, FC Glarus signed the UEFA Pro Trainer License Holder Bajo Hadzic as coach.

FC Walenstadt 2 withdrew for the winter break.
After a pleasant first half of the season, especially with a bad second half of the season, the chance to have a say in the promotion was missed. At the end of the season they had won 11 games, drew 4 times and lost 5 games (goal difference: 62:28). This resulted in 3rd place in the table. In the end they were 11 points behind the promotion place (FC Sevelen). The relegated were FC Walenstadt 2, which had already retired during the winter break, and FC Netstal 2 (with 3 points).
The players with the most appearances were:
- Gianluca Zimmermann

Due to the age range in the team, the juniors of FC Glarus had to compete with the B juniors in the 2017/2018 season. Although only two juniors were no longer allowed to play in the C juniors, since they were two leaders, the coaching team decided to compete in the B juniors. The Glarus players were also among the best among the B-Juniors (autumn season 2017: 2nd place / 15 points / goal difference: 44:30). Although they were by far the youngest team, they were able to play at the top of the table. The Glarus women were also among the best indoor teams in the B-Juniors and were able to play and win some final games at the indoor tournaments over the winter.

It was already clear in the winter of 2018 that the “Junior Women Football at FC Glarus” project would come to an end in six months. The association had announced that it would reorganize junior football in August 2018 and introduce a U12, U15 and U19 championship. This would have meant that the juniors of FC Glarus had to compete in the U19 (FF19) from August 2018 due to the age structure. However, since most of the players were only 15 years old, this would make no sense. Especially since 11er football was played in FF19 and FC Glarus clearly had too few juniors. However, since some of the juniors were already too old for a U15 (FF15) team, no FF15 team could be provided. So it was already clear before the start of the 2017/2018 spring championship that this great time would come to an end at the end of the 2017/2018 season.

The spring season 2017/2018 then turned into a power demonstration by the Glarus women. Eight games, seven wins (1st place / goal difference: 75:21). Ironically, the very last game on June 2, 2018 in Bütschwil was lost 8: 6 in a goal spectacle. Since the group victory was already certain before, this did not detract from the joy of this great season. The two oldest players, Tsomo Stähli and Ada Galluccio, switched to the 2nd division team of FC Linth 04 in summer 2018, in which both became regular players. Delia Cescato, Riana Rhyner and Sabrina Hodel switched to the C-Junior team of FC Glarus, in which all three could play central roles. Delia Cescato was the undisputed captain of this team. With the three mentioned juniors, the C-Juniors managed to move up from the 2nd strength class to the 1st strength class in spring 2019. Other juniors switched to the FC Schwanden FF15 team.

Today, in addition to Ada Galluccio and Tsomo Stähli, Riana Rhnyer also plays in the 2nd division team of FC Linth 04. Delia Cescato moved to FC Rapperswil-Jona in summer 2019 and is part of the U16 team. It was three and a half great years in which FC Glarus had a junior team. However, there is currently no prospect of a continuation of this success story. The main reason for this is that in Schwanden (FC Schwanden) and in Näfels (FC Linth 04) women's football has been successfully played for several decades. There would be a risk that all three projects would not work if FC Glarus tried to set up a women's football department. Women's football has established itself at FC Schwanden and FC Linth 04. One should say "never never". Perhaps there will be another "Shona Dubacher" in a few years' time who will carry out such a project at FC Glarus?

The 2018/19 season was once again a very pleasant affair for the first team. The club management clearly stipulated that the long-awaited promotion to the 3rd division must / should happen this season. With the exception of the last matchday, FC Glarus never finished first in the group, which entitles them to promotion. This was not due to the poor performance of the Zigerschlitz players, but to the fact that with FC Uznach 2 a second very strong team in this group was there. During the winter break, they finished second in the table, two points behind FC Uznach 2. In the first half of the season there was an unfortunate defeat against FC Bashkimi 99 and two draws (against FC Triesen 2 and against FC Wagen). What happened in the second half of the season shows that you prepared optimally for the second half of the season and that the morale in the team was also good. Nine games, nine wins, that was the verdict of the second half of the season for FC Glarus (FC Glarus celebrated eleven wins in a row this season).

Since FC Uznach 2 also played a very good second half of the season (they won seven games up to the last day of the game and only played one draw), the race for promotion remained open and exciting until the last day. The game plan wanted it so that on the last day of the match the two equal points FC Uznach 2 and he FC Glarus had to play against each other. So there was a final on June 8, 2019. Since FC Uznach had 2 fewer penalty points, a draw would have been enough for the team from Gaster-Land to advance. FC Glarus had to win to secure first place in the table. It was a wonderful summer day and the Buchholz had been very well attended for a long time. Before the game it was clear how important this game is for FC Glarus. Everyone was full of hope and confidence, but also a little tense. Shortly before the half-time break (42nd minute), FC Glarus took the lead. In the middle of the second half (65th minute), the Glarner were able to play an exemplary counterattack and led 2-0. As a result, FC Uznach 2 took control of the game and strongly pushed Glarus back into their own half. For the spectators it was clear that if they conceded it would be extremely close again, as the Uznach team were now clearly superior. In the 90th minute, the defender Juan Manuel Traba Baumgartner knocked the FC Uznach 2 striker off his feet in the penalty area. Since the situation was so clear (the opponent had no chance to stay on his feet after the Glarus defender was tackled), there were no protests from the Glarus people. Thanks to the outstanding goalkeeper Patrik Horner, who previously parried sensationally three times, the Glarus team stayed 2-0 in the lead, as he now selected the right corner and was able to fend off the well-shot penalty. Shortly afterwards, the referee whistled off the very fair game. It was a high-class 4th league game and everyone involved earned top marks (FC Glarus, FC Uznach 2 and also the referee). Although it was the all-important game for both teams, the game remained very fair throughout the season, which was certainly also due to the sensational performance of the referee, who had the game under control from the first minute. Finally the rise was made and the lowlands of the 4th division could be left. The promotion party first took place on the Buchholz soccer field, where all functionaries (junior trainers, helpers, ...) and players celebrated the promotion together over a meal. Then the party in Route66 (bar in Glarus) continued into the morning hours.

Responsible as coach of the first team this season was the player-coach Mentor Boshtraj.

The second team (5th division) also basically had the goal of promotion. In a great Glarus championship (all Glarus clubs provided a 5th league team each in this 5th league season) it was also very close. It was already clear during the winter break that the newcomer to the 4th league would come from the Glarnerland; four of the five Glarus teams were too strong compared to the other teams. The fact that the promotion was missed by two points has to do with a very unfortunate first half of the season, where you shared points with your opponent in four out of eight games and even had to leave the pitch as a loser twice. As with the first team, the second team's preparation for the second half of the season must have been sensational. In the second half of the season, you could leave the pitch as the winner in eight out of nine games and only had to split the points once (against FC Netstal). In the end, the first four teams (all from the Glarnerland) were only two points apart. Whereby FC Rüti GL was able to secure promotion on the penultimate matchday and the defeat on the last matchday against FC Glarus could not affect the celebration on the Tödi sports field in Rüti GL. FC Rüti GL knew that they would be promoted if they did not receive a yellow or red card in the last game of the season.

The B-Juniors started in the second highest division (promotions league) in autumn 2018. With nine wins from nine games (goal difference: 45:12) they rose to the Coca-Cola Juniors League (highest possible league in grassroots football) without losing points. The coach of the B-Juniors was Renato Micheroli. In spring 2019, relegation in the Coca-Cola Juniors League could be managed without any problems. Thanks to finishing 6th (out of 12 teams) there was never any risk of relegation. In the end, they had 13 points ahead of the relegation zone. In the end, there were 5 wins, three draws and 3 defeats (18 points; goal difference: 30:23).
The C-Juniors were able to advance from the 2nd class to the 1st class in the spring championship (9 games / 9 wins / goal difference: 82:12).

FC Glarus started in the third division for the first time in seven years. The first half of the season was satisfactory. Four wins, one draw after six defeats (goal difference: 23:22) meant 7th place in the table at the winter break. On April 30, 2020, the Swiss Football Association had to cancel and cancel the 2019/20 amateur season due to the corona pandemic. For FC Glarus this decision did not have any major impact, as the first team was in safe midfield and had no chances of advancement (18 points behind table leaders FC Herisau) and eight points ahead of the relegation ranks. This decision did not have any major impact on the second team either. After a solid preliminary round, they wintered in fourth place in the table (5 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats / goal difference: 32:12) with eight points behind the first place eligible for promotion. With the cancellation of the 2019/20 season, there were no promotions or relegations. The team around coach Galip Ezircan started the 2019/20 season with the goal of "promotion to the 4th division". The results were generally not bad. However, since they missed points in the direct duels for the promotion place, they were generally not satisfied with what they had achieved. In retrospect, this was no longer so dramatic because the second half of the season could no longer be played due to the corona pandemic and the 2019/20 season was finally canceled.

On November 1st, 2019, 17-year-old Franco Elmer and 20-year-old Samuel Hermann made their debut in the away game in Gossau (3-2 defeat) 1st team. Franco Elmer was part of the B-Juniors in the 2019/2020 season, while Samuel Hermann was basically part of the second team.

As the only football club in the canton, FC Glarus was again able to provide at least one team in all junior categories (A-Juniors to G-Juniors). The figurehead of the junior department was clearly the B junior team, which was trained by Renato Micheroli and Kevin Sabato. The B-Juniors of FC Glarus have been playing in the Coca-Cola Junior League, which is the highest possible division, for a year. Four game days before the end of the season they were able to celebrate their relegation. The 23-0 home win against the later relegated FC Kreuzlingen is certainly worth mentioning. This was not an everyday result in the Coca-Cola Junior League.

The C-Juniors were responsible for the second highlight of the autumn round. It was not until the summer of 2019 that they rose from the 2nd strength class to the 1st strength class. Against all odds, the Glarus Juniors fought for promotion to the promotion league from the start of the season. With three rounds to go it was clear that the C-Juniors would have another promotion in their own hands - but three wins from the last three games were required. The players around the coaching team Tashi Garne and Fabio Barbieri accepted the challenge and mastered the task with flying colors. Especially since on the penultimate day of the match you still had to play against the leaders of the table at the time and the other two opponents were also in the middle of the table. All three games could be won with a goal difference of at least six goals. The whole club was very happy about the unplanned promotion. To march through as a climber and to rise again reminded a little of the glorious times in the mid-80s, when the active team around today's FC Glarus President Koni Gabriel marched through from the 2nd division to the NLB within two years.

The A-Juniors also wanted to move up from the 2nd class to the 1st class. However, since there are already many players in the first team who can still be used in the A-Juniors, this was a particularly difficult undertaking. The place in the front midfield can therefore also be booked as a success, even if the intended goal was not achieved. The other junior teams also made the club management happy. The main focus here is on fun and technical training. Thanks to very well-trained trainers, the juniors make progress week by week. The junior division of FC Glarus is on the right track. This is mainly thanks to the tireless work of the junior chairman Manuel Lorente and the technical director of the junior department Alessandro Cescato. These have brought new structures into the youth movement of FC Glarus, with which the training philosophy of the Swiss Football Association can be implemented in full. Even at the base (G-Juniors to E-Juniors) there are already some talents that are optimally trained and looked after by currently 17 children's football coaches. Due to the corona pandemic, no spring championship could be played in junior football. As of June 30th, 2020, FC Glarus had the following number of juniors: 41 G-Juniors, 30 F-Juniors, 35 E-Juniors, 23 D-Juniors, 23 C-Juniors, 19 B-Juniors and 22 A-Juniors. This makes 193 juniors.

Infrastructure

FC Glarus plays its home games at the Buchholz sports complex in Glarus. There is a spacious cloakroom building, a grandstand, the clubhouse of FC Glarus and two playing fields. The record number of spectators dates back to 1991 (09/28/1991) when the Grasshopper Club Zürich was a guest in Glarus in the Swiss Cup and almost 3,600 spectators were greeted at the Buchholz sports facility (final result 0: 7).

The floodlights on the tall masts in Buchholz can be seen from afar. These were purchased on the occasion of the promotion to the NLB in 1988. The old floodlight system of the Buchholz was passed on to Weesen.

All active teams and most of the junior teams train on the "Buchholz" sports facility. Only the G-Juniors, F-Juniors and Seniors 30+ train on the "Gründli" sports field approx. 2 km away, at the southern end of the city of Glarus.

The first playing field of FC Glarus was next to the old ice field in Glarus (on "Erlen"). In 1921, FC Glarus moved into the area in Buchholz, where it is still at home today.

society

FC Glarus currently has two active teams (3rd division / 5th division). In addition, teams can be placed in all junior categories (since 2008 also in the G juniors). The junior department counts 190 juniors, the entire club 250 active footballers. It is particularly worth mentioning that the B-Juniors of FC Glarus play in the highest possible league (Coca Cola Junior League). The C-Juniors were promoted to the Promotion League (second-highest C-Juniors league in grassroots football) in the 2019 fall season.
