René Botteron (born October 17, 1954 in Glarus ) is a former Swiss football player .

Life

Botteron's home club was FC Glarus . From there, FC Zurich brought him , where he developed into a national player. He played a total of 307 competitive games (NLA, Swiss Cup, European Cup) for FC Zurich and scored 61 goals. In 1980 he came second in the election for Swiss Footballer of the Year. Botteron was known to do almost anything with his right foot. After Köbi Kuhn's resignation, he was captain of FC Zurich from 1977 to 1980.

A move to 1. FC Köln followed , but the Swiss midfielder was never really able to convince. He suffered from the fact that the team at that time had many stars in their ranks, Dieter Müller , Bernd Schuster , Tony Woodcock , Rainer Bonhof , Bernhard Cullmann , Klaus Fischer , Klaus Allofs and Stephan Engels , who did not find their place in the team dispute. In the season 1981 / 82 he was after a long time at the Cologne Reserve Bank in winter 1981 Standard Liege borrowed. The Belgians, with whom he reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, didn't have the money to sign him, and the Cologne team didn't want to give him a new contract. At the beginning of the 1982 season, the Swiss was transferred to 1. FC Nürnberg for 600,000 D-Marks . Botteron was the first Swiss footballer to take part in a European Cup final in 1982 (losing 2-1 to FC Barcelona ). René Botteron, who was nominated for a world selection in 1981, was also called the "Cruyff Helvetiens".

After a 3-0 draw against Belgium in autumn 1982, he learned from the press that he would no longer be considered for the national team by national coach Paul Wolfisberg . In 1986, however, he made another comeback for three internationals, playing twice as a Libero and making his final international match on August 27, 1986.

Zlatko Čajkovski , his coach at FC Zurich, said of him: "René Botteron - came from me as champagne, now play like mineral water!"

“Bo-Bo-Botteron” was a battle cry that was often heard on the school grounds and football stadiums in Zurich in the late 1970s.
