The Royal Standard Club de Liège , generally known in German-speaking countries as Standard Liège , is one of the most successful football clubs in Belgium and is based in Liège . He plays in Division 1A .

history

The Royal Standard Club de Liège was founded in 1898 by students as the Standard Football Club . In 1923 he added the royal title awarded to the club's name. The club name was originally inspired by Standard de Paris , a once popular French club. In 1996 the former first division team RFC Seraing joined the club.

Standard Liège, second in Belgium's all-time league table, has been Belgian champion ten times and won the Belgian Cup six times. Accordingly, the club also made many appearances internationally. He made it to the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1982 , but lost 2-1 to FC Barcelona after an early 1-0 lead at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona . Former Mönchengladbacher and European Footballer of the Year Allan Simonsen scored one of the goals for the Catalans.

On April 20, 2008, the team was able to secure the Belgian championship for the first time since 1983 in the preliminary home game with a 2-0 win against RSC Anderlecht . After the end of the season, master trainer Michel Preud'homme did not extend his expiring contract and moved to KAA Gent . When Preud'hommes decided against a further engagement in Liège, the term of his new contract was the sticking point. While the coach favored a two-year contract, the club preferred to sign a one-year contract. From June 2008 to February 2010, the team was trained by the former Romanian international László Bölöni .

In the 2008/09 season, Standard was able to defend the title after two play-off games against RSC Anderlecht. The playoffs had become necessary after both clubs had finished the season with 77 points and 24 wins. Goal difference does not matter in Belgium.

After a 1: 1 in the first leg, Standard beat the record champions in the second leg in Liège 1: 0. It was Liege's tenth title win.

On February 10, 2010 the contract with Bölöni was terminated and the technical director Dominique D'Onofrio took over the training of the team until the end of the season.

Since the introduction of the play-offs in the Jupiler League

In the 2009/10 season , in which play-offs were carried out for the first time in the Jupiler League, the club did not reach the master play-offs and could not qualify for the Europa League via play-off 2 . In the following year , Standard reached the champions play-offs as sixth in the regular round. There you could catch up seven points and in the end were tied with the champions KRC Genk . Since Standard was rounded up by half a point when transferring half the points from the main round to the play-off round, but not at Genk, Standard was only runner-up and thus achieved participation in the third qualifying round for the 2011 Champions League / 12 .

Since they lost there against FC Zurich , there was a participation in the play-offs for the Europa League . There they won against Helsingborgs IF and reached the group stage, where the Group B won. About the sixteenth finals, which you won against Wisła Krakau , you reached the second round, where you met again on Hannover 96 , which had been in the same group. The round of 16 was lost 6-2 in total. In the Jupiler League they reached the master play-off in the same year, but could not qualify there again for a European competition.

The 2013/14 season concluded the club as the best of the regular round. In the championship play-offs they lost five points to RSC Anderlecht , so that Standard was only runner-up again. In the 2014/15 Champions League , Standard survived the third qualifying round against Panathinaikos Athens . Since you lost the following play-off games against Zenit St. Petersburg , you took part in the group stage of the Europa League , where you were eliminated in 4th place.

In the 2014/15 season , Standard achieved 4th place in the championship play-offs. Since Club Bruges had also won the cup as runner-up this year, this place entitled them to participate in the 3rd qualifying round for the 2015/16 Europa League , which was won against FK Željezničar Sarajevo . However, they then lost the play-off games against the Norwegian Molde FK and were eliminated.

In the championship in the 2015/16 season , the club only finished 7th at the end of the regular round and would not have reached the European Cup via play-off 2. However, since Standard had won the Belgian Cup , it was able to take part in the group stage of the 2016/17 Europa League . In third place, the club was eliminated from the Europa League.

The champions play-offs were not reached in the 2016/17 season either. There was no qualification for the European Cup via play-off 2 or the cup.

In the 2017/18 season , Standard was sixth at the end of the regular round. In the championship play-offs you could catch up nine points and in the end became runner-up and were thus eligible to participate in the third qualifying round for the 2018/19 Champions League . Since they lost the games against Ajax Amsterdam , they took part in the group stage of the Europa League 2018/19 , which they finished in third place. As the Belgian Cup winner 2018 , the club was also qualified for this group stage.

The 2018/19 season ended with 3rd place in the championship play-offs, so that the club was only qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2019/20 Europa League . After the Belgian court of arbitration ruled on 17 July 2019 for sport as a court of appeal, KV Mechelen was excluded from the first division due to the manipulation of the game KV Mechelen against Waasland-Beveren on 11 March 2018 in the 2017/18 season, among other things from the Europa League , this exclusion was confirmed by UEFA on July 18, 2019. All Belgian clubs moved up to a qualifying place. With that, Standard again had a starting place in the group stage of the Europa League .

In the group draw, the German club Eintracht Frankfurt , the English club Arsenal FC and the Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães were drawn. After two wins, two draws and two defeats, they only achieved third place in the table, so that Standard was eliminated from the Europa League after the group stage.

After the end of the 2019/20 season , Michel Preud'homme announced his resignation as coach. On June 10, 2020, the Frenchman Philippe Montanier was signed as the new coach.

Stadion

The club plays its home games in Belgium's third largest stadium, the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium , unofficially called Stade Sclessin , which was built in 1984 . The venue has a capacity of around 30,000 spectators.
