The Royal Excel Mouscron is a merged football club from Mouscron, Belgium . He was promoted to the top Belgian league in 2014 ( Division 1A since 2016 ).

history

After the financial bankruptcy of the Excelsior Mouscron and the denial of a license from the Royal Belgian Football Association , the city started negotiations with the RRC Péruwelz about a merger. On March 11, 2010, those responsible signed a contract. The debt of 100,000 euros was taken over and the city pledged to maintain the "Futurosport" training center. The new club Royal Mouscron-Péruwelz took over the RRC Peruwelz, got its license number 216 and kept the club colors red and blue.

In the first season the club played in the 4th division and subsequently rose to the 3rd division in Division A. The 2011/12 season won the club as champions of the league and went straight to the second division . The following season finished Royal Mouscron-Péruwelz in second and thus qualified for a play-off, but lost. In 2014 Mouscron-Péruwelz was fourth and qualified again for the play-offs and was promoted to the first division.

In August 2014, the club announced that it would be renaming itself Royal Excel Mouscron with the start of the next 2015/16 season . A year and a half later, a new logo was also introduced, which was previously determined by a vote on the club's website.

In the first few years after promotion to the 1st division, Excel Mouscron played against relegation, which was always only just avoided. In the subsequent play-off round, there was no placement for the qualifying final for the Europa League. The club achieved its best position so far in the 2018/19 season with 10th place in the main round.

On September 2, 2018, Bernd Storck was hired as a trainer for one year, with the option of an extension. Mouscron had zero points after six games at this point. Storck managed to save the club from relegation. On May 8, 2019, when Mouscron could no longer reach a European Cup qualification via Play-off 2, he informed the club that he would not renew his contract.

The commitment of Bernd Hollerbach as the new head coach for the new season was announced on May 22, 2019. Hollerbach received a contract for two years. As a result of Hollerbach's prolonged illness, Philippe Saint-Jean , the previous head of the training center, was appointed as head coach on February 5, 2020 until the end of the main round of the 2019/20 season. Hollerbach resumed its work on February 25, 2020.

Royal Excel Mouscron only received the license for the 2020/21 season after the Belgian court of arbitration for sport was involved. The budget presented there contained savings in expenses, which would also have meant a reduction in the trainer's salary. After talks, the coaching contract was ended amicably on June 10, 2020.

In mid-July 2020, the French businessman Gérard Lopez , who is also president of the French first division club OSC Lille , took over the shares in Mouscron. Lille and Mouscron would now cooperate. Since there is no competition for reserve teams in France, young players from Lille have the opportunity to develop at Mouscron. But Belgian young players should also be promoted in Mouscron. At his suggestion, the Frenchman Fernando Da Cruz was signed as the new coach.
