The Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht ( German  Royal Sports Club Anderlecht ), RSC Anderlecht for short , is a football club from Anderlecht in the Brussels-Capital Region , Belgium . The home arena is the Lotto Park with 21,500 seats. The current president is Wouter Vandenhaute .

history

On May 27, 1908, 13 football fans founded the Sporting Club Anderlecht to promote sport in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht. On its 25th birthday in 1933, the club was awarded the title Société Royale .

The association was able to celebrate success at a local level early on, which in 1912 also succeeded at a national level. In 1921, the club achieved participation in the Division d'Honneur , the predecessor of the current Division 1A (highest Belgian league). After eventful years, in which the Mauve et Blanc (the purple-whites) presented themselves as an elevator team that constantly knocked on the highest national level in order to immediately say goodbye to lower spheres, they finally succeeded in being promoted to the top league in 1935 . Since then, Anderlecht have been part of the strongest Belgian league without interruption , which is only surpassed in Belgium by Standard Liège's series (since 1921 without interruptions in League 1).

The club from the Brussels suburb made its real breakthrough after the end of the Second World War. The first national championship title was celebrated in 1947. 33 further national championship titles, nine national cup wins and thirteen Belgian Supercup titles should follow him at the national level.

The Belgians were also able to draw attention to themselves at the international level. At the beginning of the 1970s they reached the final of the trade fair cup , but had to give way to Arsenal FC due to an away goal . After notable performances, a few years later three consecutive finals in the cup winners competition were recorded, two of which (1976 and 1978) could be won. In 1977 they had to admit defeat to Hamburger SV with two late goals , but they won the European Supercup in both victorious years . Five years after the second European title, the UEFA Cup was won. The following year, 1984, in the final of the UEFA Cup, the winner Tottenham Hotspur only had to admit defeat on penalties. Although the entry into the cup winners' final against Sampdoria Genoa was celebrated again in 1990 , Anderlecht has been waiting for a successful continuation of the great triumphs on the international level for more than 20 years. On March 6, 2008, the RSC conceded the highest defeat in international business with a 5-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich , in the second leg on March 12, 2008 at the Allianz Arena, a 2: 1, which the club out of the UEFA Cup adopted. In the following season, the RSC was eliminated early in the second qualifying round for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League against Belarusian champions BATE Baryssau with 1: 2 (home game) and 2: 2. In the following season the club was eliminated in the Champions League playoffs against Olympique Lyon (1: 5 first leg, 1: 3 second leg), but then reached the second round of the Europa League , where they played against Hamburger SV (1: 3, 4: 3) left the international business completely.

At the end of the 2009/10 season, RSC Anderlecht celebrated its 30th national championship. This qualified the club for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League , where the Brussels suburban club prevailed against Welsh representatives The New Saints FC before being eliminated in the play-offs on penalties against FK Partizan Belgrade . As a result, RSC Anderlecht took part in the UEFA Europa League . After surviving the group phase, the club was eliminated in the round of 32 against Ajax Amsterdam .

In the 2016/17 season, RSC Anderlecht won their 34th and, to date, last championship under Swiss coach René Weiler . The team was statistically the best in all areas, both in the qualifying round and in the play-offs. In the UEFA Europa League they were eliminated in the quarterfinals after extra time against eventual winners Manchester United .

In the 2018/19 season, RSC Anderlecht reached the play-off championship round. There, however, the team lost the first three games. The fourth game was canceled due to the rioting Anderlecht fans and finally lost 5: 0 against Anderlecht. With seven points behind a place that entitles to participate in a European cup competition, the separation with coach Fred Rutten was agreed on April 16, 2019 by mutual agreement . Karim Belhocine was hired as an interim trainer . Nevertheless, the team was in 6th place at the end of the play-off round and is therefore not qualified for any European cup competition in the following season.

In addition to the lack of income from the European Cup in the 2019/20 season, RSC Anderlecht has been charged with a FIFA fine of the equivalent of 177,000 euros for violating the transfer rules for minors in the years 2011 to 2013. With regard to the punishment, FIFA positively took into account the fact that RSC Anderlecht had changed its practice since 2013.

The 2019/20 season started poorly for Anderlecht. After the 10th matchday, the club was in 13th place, but worked its way up in the rest of the season and was in 8th place on the 29th matchday, when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , in 8th place On the match day, 6th place and thus the championship round and at least qualification for the Europa League would have been attainable. As a result of the end of the season, RSC Anderlecht is not qualified for the European Cup for the second season in a row.

At the end of May 2020 a plan RSCA 2020–2025 was presented, with which the financial problems of the association should be solved. Marc Coucke remains the main owner, but resigned as president. On June 3, 2020, the Board of Directors elected Wouter Vandenhaute as the new President. Vandenhaute, the player Vicent Kompany and other shareholders raised a total of 20 million euros in new capital for the club.

Coach in the 2019/20 season

For the restart in the 2019/20 season , Vincent Kompany was signed as player and manager for three years. He makes the basic decisions like tactics and line-up, but does not have a trainer's license. In the event of a dispute, Kompany's decision applies. On May 25, 2019, Simon Davies was also signed as the official head coach for three years .

After Anderlecht had only scored two out of twelve possible points on August 22, 2019, this division of tasks was changed: While the oldest player (after Kompany) had previously acted as captain , Kompany took over this function permanently. To do this, he concentrates on his tasks as a player on match days.

After Anderlecht had only scored six out of a possible 27 points after nine games in early October 2019, Franky Vercauteren was signed as the new head coach. Vincent Kompany continues his unofficial role as player-coach. The previous head coach Simon Davies initially stayed with the club as an assistant coach ( field coach ). At the beginning of February 2020, an amicable separation was agreed for personal reasons.

On October 15, 2019, the Belgian Football Association's license commission issued a warning to RSC Anderlecht because, according to the association's findings, Kompany actually acted as head coach until September 26, 2019, without having a coaching license. The commission did not follow the statements in the employment contracts, but the actual behavior at press conferences and public training sessions. In addition, RSC Anderlecht have declared that Kompany has the last word on disputes. Therefore she imposed the highest possible fine on Anderlecht of 5,000 euros. Should Kompany continue to exercise coaching duties, the club was threatened with a license withdrawal for the First Division.

RSC Anderlecht accepted this penalty on October 20, 2019, but emphasized that Kompany was not a coach. He would only have taken on management tasks. The association referred to the contractual regulations. Of course, Kompany is an experienced player who is often asked for advice by the coach and who also takes on a leadership role over the other players in training.

Bribery scandal

In 1997, those responsible for the club surprisingly admitted that the referee was bribed with £ 27,000 before the 1984 UEFA Cup semi-final second leg . Nottingham Forest had previously won the first leg 2-0. In the second leg, which Anderlecht then won 3-0, two noticeable decisions were made. On the one hand, a hit from Nottingham Forest was not given and on the other hand, Anderlecht were awarded a controversial penalty.

After the incident became known, Nottingham Forest asked for the opportunity to take this place when Anderlecht next qualified for a European competition. However, this approach also led nowhere, as did later proceedings before ordinary courts.

Since the referee in question had already passed away, UEFA had no starting point for further investigations and limited itself to warning RSC Anderlecht. It was taken into account in favor of the club that the process would not have been discovered without the voluntary admission.

Stadion

Front of the Lotto Park

RSC Anderlecht plays its home games in the Lotto Park . Until 2019 it was named after the former Belgian national coach Constant Vanden Stock . In 1917 it was built with only one wooden grandstand. At that time, the name of the stadium was Stade Emile Verse . But it was also called Parc Astrid or Astrid Park. More grandstands followed later. In 1983 the facility was completely rebuilt at the same location. The stadium has a capacity of 21,500 spectators. There are also 1,500 business boxes and 400 VIP boxes.
