James Alexander Lawrence (born August 22, 1992 in Henley-on-Thames ) is a Welsh - English football player who plays for the Belgian first division RSC Anderlecht and in the Welsh national team. He plays in the positions of center-back, left full-back and defensive midfielder.

Lawrence's early youth career included the English clubs FC Enfield , Arsenal and Queens Park Rangers . In 2008 his family moved to the Netherlands, where he switched to HFC Haarlem . In 2009, Lawrence left Haarlem to join Ajax Amsterdam , with whom he won the 2010/11 Netherlands U19 championship and was coached by Dennis Bergkamp . Lawrence later played in the youth teams of Sparta Rotterdam and RKC Waalwijk .

Lawrence joined AS Trenčín on August 13, 2014 at the age of 21 and scored a goal on his debut that same day in a cup match against ŠK Strážske . Four days later, Lawrence made his Fortuna Liga debut in a 4-2 win over MFK Košice . With Trenčín he was able to win the Slovak Cup twice and the Slovak championship twice in the following years. For the Slovak club, he completed a total of 86 league games in four years.

On August 29, 2018, Lawrence moved to RSC Anderlecht . Lawrence played 23 league games for Anderlecht in the 2018/19 season . Anderlecht finished fourth in the main round of Division 1A and sixth in the playoffs this season . For the first time in 56 years, the club missed the European competition.

On August 22, 2019, Lawrence moved to FC St. Pauli, where he was loaned from Anderlecht until the end of the season. Lawrence made his debut for St. Pauli on August 26, 2019, scoring a goal in a 2-1 win over Holstein Kiel . Due to several injuries, he was on the field for St. Pauli in 14 of 30 possible games.

At the end of the 2019/20 season, he returned to RSC Anderlecht when the loan expired.

National team

Lawrence was called to the Wales squad for the first time on November 5, 2018, and played his first game for the national team in a friendly against Albania on November 20, 2018. His first competitive game for Wales was a 1-0 win against the Slovak Republic in the Cardiff City Stadium on March 24 of 2019.
