The Cardiff City Stadium ( Welsh Stadiwm Dinas Caerdydd ) is a rugby - and football stadium in the district Leckwith the Welsh capital Cardiff . It is the home of Cardiff City Football Club and replaced Ninian Park , which opened in 1910 . The Cardiff Blues , a rugby union team , also use this stadium as a venue. In April 2009 a hybrid turf was laid, which consists of natural turf with artificial turf fibers woven into it. The stadium, which opened on July 22, 2009, initially held 26,828 spectators. It is the second largest sports stadium in Wales after the Millennium Stadium . In 2014, the opposite stand ( Ninian stand ) was increased by two tiers, so that the capacity is now 33,280 seats.
In 2014, the UEFA Super Cup match between Real Madrid and Sevilla FC (2-0) was played in the Cardiffer Stadium .
