The Estadio Anoeta (full name: Estadio Municipal de Anoeta , officially Reale Arena by sponsorship agreement ) is a football stadium in the Spanish city of San Sebastián , Autonomous Community of the Basque Country . It is the home ground of the first division club Real Sociedad San Sebastián . After the renovation from 2017 to 2019, with the removal of the athletics facility, the facility offers space for 39,500 spectators.

history

The Estadio Anoeta in San Sebastián, a city in the north of the country in the Basque Country, was built between 1990 and 1993. It is the successor to the Estadio de Atotxa , which held 17,000 spectators and was previously the home of Real Sociedad San Sebastián for 75 years. In 1993, however, it was demolished and replaced by the new, larger stadium, the capacity of which was estimated at 32,000 spectators. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user Real Sociedad and the Spanish record champions Real Madrid met for a friendly.

Since that day, August 13, 1993, Real Sociedad has been using the Estadio Anoeta as the venue for their home games. The first event in the stadium was the European Junior Athletics Championships , which began on July 29, 1993. The club has won two Spanish championships to date , but still in the old stadium, and twice the country's cup winners . In addition, he won the Spanish Supercup in 1982 . Sociedad is currently playing in the Primera División, after having made it back to the top division of Spanish football in the 2009/10 season.

modification

The renovation of the Estadio Anoeta has been planned for several years. In December 2016, Real Sociedad published a detailed schedule for the stadium renovation. The renovations are to be carried out in full game operation. From May to July 2017, minor work will begin outside the stadium. Pipelines will be moved and stairs will be converted to make space for the eight concrete columns in the stadium corners. You should later hold the roof structure. Then the foundations are laid for this . This is followed by the conversion of the south curve (7,000 seats) behind the gate from July 2017 to July 2018. The new spectator tier will be moved 20 meters closer to the playing field. As a result, the capacity drops to 25,000 viewers during this period. The new roof construction with the four main girders is supported from the outside by eight girders. The Spanish league season ends in May 2018. While construction work on the south stand is slowly coming to an end, the playing field will be lowered during the summer break from May to August 2018 and the lower tiers of the main and opposite stands will be rebuilt. This creates space for additional spectator seats. When the south stand is ready, the stadium will again offer 32,000 seats in the 2018/19 season. From August 2018 to August 2019, the north curve, just like the south stand, will be rebuilt. During the summer break of 2019, work on the outside area of the west and east stands is planned. The stairwells are removed, which results in a small gain in floor space. The renovations end with the construction of the new stairwells and the cladding of the facade in blue, as has already happened with the other grandstands. The redesign of the Estadio Anoeta into a pure football stadium will cost 50 million euros. At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, the stadium will offer 42,300 seats.

The costs are borne by the autonomous community of the Basque Country (EUR 10 million), the province of Gipuzkoa with EUR 4 million and the association the remaining EUR 36 million, of which EUR 24 million will be paid immediately and EUR 12 million over the long term.

In September 2017, the renovation of the Anoeta began with the demolition of the south stand. In January 2018, the excavations in front of the abandoned southern tier were completed. Next up are the excavations on the east and main stands. The construction of the new southern tier is then to begin while the game is running. In the 2017/18 season , the Estadio Anoeta will only have 25,000 spectator seats instead of the original 32,076. The new grandstand with the supports for the new roof was ready by mid-2018.

There was an accident on the construction site in mid-July 2019. A 51-year-old worker fell 20 meters and injured himself while working on the roof of the north stand. He was taken to Donostia Hospital, where he was found conscious. There he had to have an operation on his chest. He suffered several broken bones.

At the beginning of August 2019, the insurance company Reale Seguros gave the stadium its name. The contract runs for six years and the sponsor pays around 1.5 million euros annually to Real Sociedad. At first the stadium was called Reale Seguros Stadium . The final name was announced on September 12th. The Anoeta will be called Real Arena .

On September 14, 2019 Real Sociedad's first home game against Atlético Madrid took place in the converted Reale Arena . The home side celebrated a 2-0 victory.

In June 2020, the 2019/20 UEFA Women's Champions League final was moved from Viola Park in Vienna to the Estadio Anoeta due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The game is scheduled to take place on August 30, 2020.

Other use

The Reale Arena is not only used for soccer games. Rugby matches are also held here. Lately it has been used a number of times for the Heineken Cup , the highest quality European cup competition in rugby union , by the French-Basque club Biarritz Olympique . The stadium was also used for the 2009/10 French Rugby Union Championship when Aviron Bayonnais played his home games at the stadium. Other events in the stadium are concerts. So already played here, among others, Pink Floyd , U2 , Depeche Mode , the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen . Most of the time, the stadium is used for football.
