The Estadio Balaídos (full name: Estadio Municipal de Balaídos ; through sponsorship agreement Abanca Balaídos ) is a football stadium currently under renovation in the Spanish city of Vigo in the north-western, autonomous community of Galicia . It is the home of the Spanish first division club Celta Vigo .
history
In September 1924, some businessmen, chaired by Joaquín Fontán, then president of the tram company, bought a 75,000 square meter plot of land to build a stadium. However, before construction could begin, the Lagares River had to be diverted. Two years later, the actual construction of the sports facility could begin. The inauguration of the stadium was celebrated on December 30, 1928. On this occasion, Celta Vigo played against Real Unión Irún and won the game 7-1. At that time the venue held 22,000 spectators and was called Stadium de Balaídos until 1946 .
Little happened at the stadium until 1967. At that time, the Vigo stadium underwent its first major renovation and expansion. The facility was renovated and expanded again for the 1982 World Cup . The main grandstand Grada Rio was rebuilt and the spectator stands Grada Marcador , Grada Gol and the Grada Tribuna renovated. The Celta Vigo team qualified for the 2003 UEFA Champions League . During a visit to the stadium by UEFA, the sports facility was criticized and failed. For a short time, a move to the Estádio do Dragão in Porto , about 150 kilometers away, was considered as an alternative . The modernizations necessary for the playing permit were carried out; this cost the city around € 3.7 million.
By the time of the renovation, 31,800 spectators had a seat in the Balaídos , including 120 VIP seats. The stands of the stadium are almost completely covered and the journalists have 160 workplaces. The floodlight system provides an illuminance of 1,200 lux .
Renovation since 2015
After more than thirty years, the Celta Vigo association and the city of Vigo have agreed to renovate the eighty-year-old venue. In January 2015, they signed a contract to renovate the balaído . The cost of the renovation designed by architect Pedro de la Puente is expected to total € 30 million. The construction work should be completed in 2017 within 30 months. After the league home game against Atlético Madrid on February 15, 2015, work began on the Grada Rio main stand . Celta Vigo will continue to use the stadium during the renovation. The curve shape of the Grada Gol and Grada Marcador back-gate stands will disappear and be replaced by new ranks directly on the edge of the field. The audience capacity will remain almost the same at around 31,500, but the venue will offer significantly more comfort.
In February 2018, the second tier of the main grandstand Grada Rio should be completed and half of the construction project should be completed. On January 4th of that year, the rank against FC Barcelona celebrated its debut in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey . Only minor jobs have to be done. The work on the two remaining tiers will continue until at least early 2019. The tender offer should be published on January 3, 2018 . But this did not happen because the Galicia Architects' Association accused the municipality of making arbitrary requirements. This delays the further conversion to the first quarter of 2019.
In June 2018, the Betanzos- based bank Abanca Corporación Bancaria, SA , one of the main sponsors of the club, gave its name to the home ground of Celta . In future it will be called Abanca Balaídos . The contract has a term of ten years.
Games of the 1982 World Cup in Vigo
Three preliminary round matches of the 1982 World Cup took place in Balaídos . An incident occurred in the match between Italy and Peru. During the game, the Peruvian José Velásquez collided with the German referee Walter Eschweiler . Eschweiler fell backwards to the ground; lost a tooth and despite this, after a short treatment, was able to lead the game to the end. After the expansion, the stadium offered 56,790 seats for the World Cup tournament.
