history

The new Estadio Municipal José Zorrilla was built in 1982, with 33,000 seats at the time, as a venue for the 1982 World Cup . It replaced the 40-year-old Estadio José Zorrilla, with a capacity of 15,000 spectators. The first game took place on February 20, 1982 between Real Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao , with Jorge Alonso scoring the goal in the home side's 1-0 win. In April 1982 the final of the Spanish Cup between Real Madrid and Sporting Gijón took place. In 1985 the north stand was built and the stadium was closed. In 1995, all standing space was converted into seats, which is why the capacity was reduced from 33,000 to 26,512. In 1997 it was finally decided to be the first Spanish football stadium to equip the A-grandstand with radiant heaters. The José Zorrilla has 120 VIP boxes. There are also 1,629 parking spaces available.
