The Estadio Benito Villamarín is a football stadium in the Spanish city of Seville , Autonomous Community of Andalusia . The facility is owned and home to the Betis Sevilla football club , which plays in the Primera División . The stadium opened in 1929 and by summer 2016 had a capacity of 51,700 spectators. The renovation of the south stand reduced the number to 43,500 visitors in the 2016/17 season . The expanded stadium has offered 60,720 seats since the 2017/18 season .

history

The first venue of Betis Sevilla was the El Campo de las Tablas Verdes and from 1920 the club was based in the Campo del Real Patronato Obrero . Betis Sevilla has been playing in the current stadium since March 17, 1929. Over the years there have been several structural changes to the stadium. In 1958, grandstands were built behind the gates, which were replaced by new buildings between 1971 and 1973. The renovation and expansion began in 1979 for the 1982 World Cup . The last major work so far took place in 2000 with the construction of the north and east stands. Today the stadium consists of three parts. On the one hand from the three-story main grandstand in the west, which is the only part of the sports facility with a roof. Behind the gate in the south there is a one-story seating area. The connected tiers of the north and east are also three-story; However, their steep construction still overlooks the main grandstand.

In October 2010 a vote was taken on the future name of the stadium. The Estadio Benito Villamarín proposal received a majority with 6,107 votes. It was followed by the name Estadio Heliopolis with 2,786 votes and Estadio Ciudad del Betis with 655 votes. Only 160 votes were given to the previous name. Thus, the stadium got the name of its former president Benito Villamarín Prieto (1955-1965) back.

In the summer of 2016, the small south stand was demolished for a new building. The demolition was completed in mid-July. During the 2016/17 season, the stadium has 43,500 seats. The old building with around 8,500 seats will be replaced by a three-story tier with 14,700 seats. After completion of the renovation for 15 million euros, the Estadio Benito Villamarín will offer around 57,000 to 58,000 seats. The association is planning further modernizations in the future, such as the complete roofing of the tiers. The stadium will be rearranged for the 2017/18 season. The old seats in white and green are being replaced by seats in different shades of green and a small part of white seating. With the new grandstand, the space available should exceed 60,000.

On January 28, 2019, the Spanish football association RFEF awarded the 2019 Copa del Rey final to the Betis Sevilla venue for the first time. The application prevailed against the Estadio Mestalla in Valencia . The game took place on May 25th of that year. The FC Valencia ended with a 2: 1 in front of 53,698 spectators the winning streak of FC Barcelona with four final wins in a row. Valencia last won the Copa in 2008.
