← Primera División 2018/19 | |
The Primera División 2019/20 (officially LaLiga Santander ) was the 89th season of the top Spanish division in football . The season began on August 16, 2019 with Athletic Bilbao's game against champions FC Barcelona and was originally supposed to end on May 24, 2020. Since the interruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March, it was continued from June 11 to July 19, 2020.
Before the start of the season
The defending champion was FC Barcelona . The three relegated FC Girona , SD Huesca and Rayo Vallecano were no longer represented . After two years in second class, the CA Osasuna managed to rise again as champions of the Segunda Division and runner-up in Granada CF. Third promoted player was the play-off winner RCD Mallorca , who returned to the top division after a six-year absence.
Game operations during the COVID-19 pandemic
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic , match operations were suspended after 27 match days in mid-March 2020 and resumed on June 11 with the 28th matchday.
