Club career

youth

Hazard started club football at the Royal State Brainois back in 1995 at the age of four. He played there for eight years before joining the AFC Tubize . At a youth tournament he was discovered by a scout from the French first division club OSC Lille, whereupon officials of the club became aware of the young Hazard and offered him a youth contract. His parents finally accepted the offer in the hope that there would be better training conditions there.

Lille OSC (2005 to 2012)

Beginnings

In 2005 he moved to OSC Lille and spent two years there in the club's own youth academy. On May 28, 2007 he signed his first professional contract there, which tied him to the club for three years. For the 2007/08 season he was promoted to the reserve team, which played in the fourth-class Championnat de France amateur . At that time he played for the reserve in the league and in the U19 in the league and in the Coupe Gambardella .

On November 14, coach Lilles Claude Puel pulled him up for the first time in the first team on the occasion of a friendly against Club Bruges . This happened due to the absence of many players who were in their national team. In this game he was able to impress Puel, who then nominated him for the 18-man squad of his team in the following first division game against AS Nancy . On November 24, 2007 (15th matchday) he made his debut in this very game when he came on as a substitute for Nicolas Fauvergue in the 0-2 away defeat in the 78th minute . Then he was back in the second team and was only considered again in January 2008 by Puel. That month he was substituted on in three league games against FC Metz , FC Sochaux and Paris Saint-Germain . These four missions remained his only in the first team in this 2007/08 season , in which he was primarily active in the reserve team and U19. In the reserve he scored a goal in eleven missions.

2008/09 season

For the next season 2008/09 , the new coach Rudi Garcia Hazard finally promoted to the first team and he received the shirt with the shirt number 26. His first season appearance was on September 14, 2008 (5th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against the Sochaux in which he replaced during the second half. In the next game against AJ Auxerre he was substituted on in the second half of the game, when the score was 1: 2 for Auxerre. In the 88th minute of the game, Hazard scored with a placed shot outside the "sixteenth" to equalize in the home stadium Nord Lille Métropole . That goal made him the youngest scorer in Lille's history at 17 years, 8 months and 13 days. In the 94th minute, Lilles Túlio de Melo got the final score with his goal to make it 3-2. As a result, Hazard established himself as a substitute.

In the 3-0 home win against AS Saint-Étienne , he started in Ligue 1 for the first time and paid back Garcia's confidence in him with his second goal of the season in the 25th minute of the game. On November 18, 2008, he signed a new contract dated 2012. On February 7, 2009 (23rd matchday) he was on the pitch for the first time in a league game for the entire game in the 3-2 home win against FC Sochaux and scored the decisive winning goal for his team in the 88th minute. Towards the end of the season, the young Hazard was more and more in the starting line-up. During this season he was ultimately used in 30 league games, of which he was in the starting lineup in 13. Hazard contributed four goals and two assists to the good season result of his team, which reached the qualification of the UEFA Europa League 2009/10 with 5th place in the table . After the season he was voted Young Player of the Year by the UNFP , making him the first non-French player to win this award.

2009/10 season

With his strong season performance, despite his young age, Eden Hazard was associated with various top international clubs for the first time in the 2009 summer transfer phase. Hazard stayed with the Dogues and started the season with a goal in the 2-0 away win against Serbian FK Sevojno in the first leg of the third qualifying round for the 2009/10 Europa League. Lille also won the second leg against Sevojno 2-0 and also beat KRC Genk twice in the 4th round, thus reaching the group stage of the Europa League. In the 4-2 home win in the second leg, Hazard met once. In a 3-0 home win against CFC Genoa in the group stage, he scored his first goal in the finals of an international competition. At that time he had already established himself in the league and in the Europa League as an important part of Lille's starting lineup. With 10 points, it was concluded the group stage as second behind Valencia from.

In the league he had to wait until December 20 (18th matchday) to score his first goal of the season in a 3-0 home win against Le Mans UC 72 . In this game he also prepared both other goals. Three days later, he met again in the 4-0 away win against AS Nancy and was able to make a template. With a winning streak from the end of November 2009 to mid-January 2010, Lille moved from the midfield to the top four. This only ended on January 20 with the 1: 2 away defeat against FC Sochaux. In the 1-0 home win against RC Lens on January 30th, Hazard led his team back onto the road to victory with his third goal of the season. On February 4th, Eden Hazard signed a new four-year contract with Lille OSC. At the end of February, they defeated the Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the round of 32 in two games and moved into the second round of the Europa League, where they met Liverpool . In the 1-0 home win in the first leg, Hazard converted a direct free kick in the 83rd minute of the game, enabling his team to win. The second leg on March 18, however, was lost 3-0 at Anfield and meant the elimination of Lilles at the tournament.

In the league things went much better for his club. On matchday 30 of the 2009/10 season he prepared two goals in a 4-1 home win against rivals HSC Montpellier . After showing impressive performances in March 2010, he was awarded the Player of the Month award that month . With Lille he reached the 4th place in the table this season. He himself was used in 37 league games in which he scored five goals and was named UNFP Young Player of the Year for the second time in a row. He lost the election to player of the season against the Argentine striker Lisandro López , who played for Olympique Lyon .

2010/11 season

The 2010/11 season started mediocre for both Hazard and his club. It took a lot of effort to secure participation in the group stage of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League against Romanian FC Vaslui in the final qualifying round . In the league, too, the first four games all ended in a draw. Hazard scored his first goal of the season in the fourth game of the season in a 1-1 draw against OGC Nice . Hazard suffered from a minor form crisis at the time, which cost him a few games in a row his place in the starting lineup. In the Europa League he could not score a single goal in the six group games and Lille only managed to get promoted to the second round as second in the table.

Despite the bad omens they started a furious run in the league from October 31, 2010, in which they were unbeaten in 13 consecutive league games, while winning nine of them. That is why they had been leading the table since the end of November. Hazard had become an integral part of the team again and contributed not insignificantly to the success with two goals and five assists. Only on February 20, 2011 did the series end with a 0-1 away defeat against HSC Montpellier.

On March 4, he prematurely extended his contract, which originally ran until 2014, for a further year. This new working paper made him the best-paid player in Ligue 1. Two days later he scored his fourth goal of the season in the important 2-1 away win against pursuers Olympique Marseille , which he scored from almost 35 meters and in which the ball reached a speed of 95 km / h reached. On April 2, he played his 100th league game for OSC Lille in a 3-1 home win against SM Caen at the age of 20 and crowned this with a goal. For the second time in his career, Hazard won the “Player of the Month” title, which was awarded to him for his achievements in March, just as it was the year before.

On April 19, he promoted his team in a 2-0 semi-final victory against OGC Nice with a goal in the final of the Coupe de France 2010/11. This was the first time since 1955 to reach the final of this competition. The final at the Stade de France was ultimately won 1-0 against Paris Saint-Germain. The winning goal was scored in the 89th minute by Ludovic Obraniak with a free kick. Hazard started this game and was replaced by defender Stéphane Dumont after the goal .

A week later they fixed the championship title with a 2-2 draw against the capital city club, which was brought to the northern French city of Lille for the first time in 57 years. This also fixed the double consisting of championship and trophy. On that day, Hazard was also named Player of the Season and became the youngest player ever to receive this award. He ended the season with twelve goals and 14 assists, which he was able to collect in 54 games across all competitions.

2011/12 season

For the 2011/12 season , Eden Hazard received the jersey number 10. In Lille's first competitive game, the 4-5 defeat in the Supercup against Olympique Marseille , Hazard scored a goal. On matchday 5 he made his first two goals of the season in a 3-1 away win against AS Saint-Étienne. Four days later he made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League when they drew in the first game of the group stage against CSKA Moscow . In the two following league games against FC Sochaux and Girondins Bordeaux , he met once each. Then he experienced a dry spell of over two months in which he could not score in eight league games. His club remained unbeaten in all games and stayed in the top 4 of the table.

On December 3 (16th matchday) he converted the game-winning penalty to the 3-2 away win against AC Ajaccio in the style of Antonín Panenka after his substitution . In the next period he managed to continue to score frequently and drew level with his previous record in league goals on matchday 19 with his seventh league goal in this 2011/12 season . On March 3, 2012, he scored both goals of his team in the 2-2 draw against AJ Auxerre and at that time already held 11 league goals. Two weeks later he netted again in a 4-0 home win against Valenciennes FC and prepared two more goals for Lilles. In the wins in the following two games against FC Évian Thonon Gaillard and FC Toulouse , he made one goal and one template. On April 15, he repeated this again in the 4-1 home win against AC Ajaccio and set a new record with his 100th league game in a row. In the following four league games Hazard scored two goals and prepared three more.

On April 28, he was nominated for the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award for the third time in a row. Two weeks later, he won this award for the second time when he beat Olivier Giroud and Younès Belhanda . He was also selected for the team of the season for the third time in a row. On May 20, 2012 (38th matchday) Hazard played against AS Nancy, the club against which he made his Ligue 1 debut four and a half years earlier, his last game for OSC Lille and wore the captain's bow in this. Hazard managed to score his first hat trick in the professional field within 24 minutes in the 4-1 home win in the first half . He said goodbye with 20 goals and 18 assists from 38 missions, in his individually strongest season by far, from Ligue 1. During his time, he played for Lille in a total of 194 competitive games in which he scored 50 goals.

Chelsea FC (2012 to 2019)

On June 4, 2012 it was announced that the top English club, Chelsea FC, had secured the services of Eden Hazard, which the winner of the previous 2011/12 UEFA Champions League confirmed on the club's own website. He signed a five-year contract with the capital city club, which, according to the English media, should bring him 170,000 pounds (the equivalent of 212,000 euros) per week and received jersey number 17 from José Bosingwa . The Blues paid 35 million euros to Lille OSC as a transfer fee for his services.

2012/13 season

He made his debut on July 18 in a preparation game against the Seattle Sounders , in which he started and scored a goal. The coach Roberto di Matteo relied on the expensive newcomer from the start. On August 12, Hazard made his competitive debut for Chelsea when he was in the starting lineup in the 3-2 defeat in the FA Community Shield 2012 against Manchester City . In the Premier League he made his debut a week later in the 2-0 away win against Wigan Athletic , in which he prepared both goals. Three days later he assisted his team with three goals in the 4-2 home win at Stamford Bridge against Reading FC . He scored his first goal three days later in a 2-0 home win over Newcastle United with a penalty and also put another forward. He played his first game for Chelsea in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League on 19 September in a 2-2 draw with Juventus Turin . On October 6, he marked his second goal of the season in a 4-1 home win against Norwich City . With his new club he got off to a strong start to the season and remained unbeaten in the first eight league games, seven of which were won. A surprising 0-1 away defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk on October 23rd in the Champions League marked the turning point in Chelsea's form curve and as a result, they could only win one in six competitive games in a month. This negative streak meant the end of Di Matteo on November 21, after a 3-0 away defeat against Juventus Turin, who brought the long-awaited Champions League trophy to London in the preseason.

Even under the new coach Rafael Benítez , Hazard was still in the starting lineup. At first, however, no increase in performance was noticeable. They were eliminated from the Champions League with third place in the table, but were allowed to continue playing in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . You couldn't win any of the next three league games either and didn't find your way back to winning ways until the beginning of December. On December 19, he scored in the league cup game against Leeds United in a 4-1 away win and made an assist. He scored his fifth goal of the season in the historic 8-0 home win over Aston Villa four days later. In mid-January 2013, he met once against Stoke City and Southampton FC within four days .

After Chelsea lost the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals at home 2-0 to Swansea City , Chelsea failed to equalize the result in the second leg on January 23. In a hectic final phase, he let himself be carried away to assault when the score was 0-0. In the 80th minute of the game he tried to snatch the play equipment out of the hand of a ball boy , who was blocking the ball and thus slowing down the game, and also kicked him, whereupon he rolled on the floor in pain. Hazard was thrown off the field with the straight red card and was then banned from the FA for three games. Hazard later apologized in public for his behavior on the club's internal channel Chelsea TV. It was later revealed that the ball boy's intention had been to buy time and thus provoke the Chelsea players.

Already in the first game after serving the suspension, he reported back with a goal and an assist in the 4-1 home win against Wigan Athletic. In the second leg of the sixteenth finals of the Europa League against Sparta Prague , he scored, after being substituted in the 92nd minute of the game, the 1-1 equalizer, which was enough for his club after the 1-0 home win in the first leg for promotion. In the 2-0 home win against West Ham United on March 17, 2013 (30th matchday), he scored again and prepared Frank Lampard's 200th goal for Chelsea. In May he and his team qualified with two semi-final wins against FC Basel for the final of the Europa League, where they were to face Benfica Lisbon . He missed this final, however, as he sustained an injury in the penultimate league game against Aston Villa. Chelsea won this game 2-1.

Hazard ended the season with nine goals and 14 assists, which he was able to collect in 34 league games. He was used in a total of 62 competitive games.

2013/14 season

Under the new coach José Mourinho , who already looked after Chelsea from June 2004 to September 2007, the 2013/14 season began with a 2-0 home win against Hull City in the league. The first important game was the 2013 UEFA Super Cup against the reigning Champions League winner Bayern Munich on August 30, 2013 . There he met in extra time for the intermittent 2-1 lead, which, however, was equalized in the 121st minute of the game by Javi Martínez . The subsequent penalty shoot-out was ultimately lost. He scored his first goal of the season on October 6 (7th matchday) in a 3-1 league win against Norwich City on Carrow Road . He scored two goals and provided an assist the next day in a 4-1 win over Cardiff City at home to Stamford Bridge.

The group stage of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League went much better than last season. In the 3-0 away win against FC Schalke 04 , he scored his fifth time this season. In October he also found himself on the 23-man list for the FIFA Ballon d'Or election for the first time . On December 4, he scored twice in the 4-3 away win against AFC Sunderland and assisted a goal. Coach Mourinho later said it was Hazard's best performance of the season. At the turn of the year 2013/14 he met three times in four games and made one template.

On February 8, 2014 (25th matchday), he scored all of his team's goals in a 3-0 home win against Newcastle United and marked his first hat trick in the Premier League. In the prestigious 4-0 home win against rivals Tottenham Hotspur on March 8, he scored his 13th league goal of the season with a penalty. He also met again in the historic 6-0 victory over hated city rivals Arsenal FC two weeks later. This defeat became the biggest of the long-time Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger and this in his thousandth competitive game as coach of the Gunners . Five days later, Hazard won the PFA Young Player of the Year award and finished second behind Liverpool striker Luis Suárez in the PFA Player of the Year election .

In the Champions League, they failed in the semifinals to Atlético Madrid after losing the second leg 3-1, whereupon José Mourinho accused him of lack of defense and put him indirectly to blame for the first goal. In May 2014 he was named Player of the Season within the club. In 35 league games this season he had 14 goals and prepared nine more. In total, he was used in all competitions in 49 games, in which he scored 17 times.

2014/15 season

Eden Hazard in a league cup match against Liverpool FC in January 2015

In the next season 2014/15 Hazard took over the jersey number 10, which was previously worn by Juan Mata until his departure in January 2014. This season got off to a great start for Hazard and Chelsea. After a comfortable win at the start of the season, he scored his first goal of the season on matchday 2 in a 2-0 home win against Leicester City . On matchday 7, he also scored in a 2-0 home win against big rivals Arsenal from a penalty. At that time he had been successful in 16 of the 16 penalties he had kicked in his professional career. At that time, Chelsea had been unbeaten for ten competitive games and were leaders in the Premier League. On October 21, he met with the 6: 0 home win in the third game of the group stage of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League double and gave a template. On November 1, he scored his fifth goal of the season in a 2-1 home win over Queens Park Rangers . Ten days later, he hit the head for the first time in his career in a 2-0 home win over Hull City .

On December 6, 2014, the 21 competitive series of undefeated games for Chelsea ended when they lost 2-1 at Newcastle United in the 15th round of the Premier League. This run lasted 110 days from the start of the season on August 18th. As a result, Hazard was able to score three goals and prepare three in the next five league games. On February 12, 2015, he signed a new five and a half year contract with the Blues . On March 1, 2015, Hazard played his first final in Chelsea's shirt when they met London city rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the 2014/15 League Cup . In the 2-0 win at Wembley Stadium , he was in the starting line-up and completed the entire game.

In the Champions League, they won the group stage by six points ahead of second-placed FC Schalke 04. In the round of 16 of the competition, they met Paris Saint-Germain, who were eliminated after two games and an overall result of 3: 3 due to the away goals rule . Hazard scored in the 2-2 draw in the second leg at home in extra time with a penalty. The Premier League season, however, remained no problem for the Mourinho squad and Hazard was at the center of the excellent season. Several greats in football, including Thierry Henry , long-time player for rival Arsenal and his coach José Mourinho, made him the best player in Chelsea and the league. The latter dubbed him one of the top three players in the world. In the 2-1 home win against Stoke City on April 4 (Matchday 31), he scored one goal and prepared another. Even in the important 1-0 home win against pursuers Manchester United , he was able to hit the Oscars again after a fantastic pass .

On April 26, he was finally named PFA Player of the Year , making him the best player in the Premier League in the 2014/15 season. A week later he scored the only goal of the day in the league game against Crystal Palace and thus the championship was decided in favor of the West Londoners, who could take the double. On May 26, 2015, he was named best player of the year for the second time in a row and became the fifth player to do so after Juan Mata , Frank Lampard , Ray Wilkins , and John Hollins . He finished the season with 19 competitive goals, 14 of them in the league, and 13 assists in 52 appearances.

2015/16 season

Eden Hazard in a Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev October 2015

The 2015/16 season started miserably for the successful Chelsea and Eden Hazard, who had been climbing up until then, was slowed down considerably. The first game of the season, the FA Community Shield 2015 against Arsenal FC, was lost 1-0. The otherwise safe penalty taker Hazard failed only in a solid 4-0 home win in the group game of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League against Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv from the point and then in the league cup game against Stoke City as the only one on penalties. In the first 12 league games they lost half and were only able to win four, accordingly early in the season the competitors in the championship race had escaped the ailing defending champion. Chelsea found themselves in the back midfield and not far from the relegation spots. After having suffered serious relegation concerns with nine defeats in 16 league games, the club separated from the successful coach Mourinho by mutual agreement on December 17, 2015. As his successor, the experienced Dutchman Guus Hiddink was installed, who should bring the Blues back into safe table regions. Hazard was unable to score a single goal during the entire first half of the season and was only able to appear as a preparer for three goals.

On January 31, Eden Hazard ended his 2,538-minute goal doldrums in a 5-1 away win against Milton Keynes Dons in the 4th round of the 2015/16 FA Cup when he scored a penalty in the 55th minute of the game. Also in the 5th round in the superior 5-1 home win against Manchester City, he scored again and prepared two goals. This season he also had to take a break for the first time for a month and a half due to injuries and hip problems. The hip problems also prevented him from appearing in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup against Everton in mid-March, when the former Chelsea player and compatriot Hazards Romelu Lukaku promoted his new club to the semi-finals with two goals. In the Champions League, Mourinho was the group winners and they made it to the round of 16 , where they met Paris Saint-Germain as last year. This game was precarious for Hazard in that he said in February of the same year in the media that it would be difficult to say no to a move to the top French club. In March 2016 they failed again at PSG after losing both games 2-1.

On April 23, he scored twice in the 4-1 away win against AFC Bournemouth and scored his first two league goals of the season on Matchday 35. On May 2, he decided with his goal to the decisive 2-2 equalizer in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur, the championship in favor of Leicester City , who were now unassailable in the lead after winning a point at Manchester United. On May 11, he marked his fourth league goal in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool FC.

Compared to his 24 in the previous season, Hazard only got 8 scorer points in the league this season. With Chelsea he finished the season on 10th place in the table, with which one could not qualify for the international competitions.

Season 2016/17

Eden Hazard in a league game against West Bromwich Albion in December 2016

On August 15, 2016, Hazard scored his team's first goal of the new 2016/17 season in a 2-1 home win in the league opener against West Ham United . On the 3rd matchday, he scored again in a 3-0 home win at the Bridge against Burnley FC . Under the new coach Antonio Conte , Hazard soon found his playing qualities from previous seasons again and the team also benefited from the Italian's new style of play, which established the flexible 5-2-3 formation in England. On October 15 (8th matchday) marked his third goal of the season in a 3-0 home win against defending champions Leicester City and increased his yield four days later in a comfortable 4-0 win against rivals Manchester United by another goal. He continued his run for a week when he set up a goal in the 2-0 away win against Southampton FC .

The following weekend he scored a brace in a 5-0 home win against Everton and has now been successful in each of the last four league games. Chelsea built their winning streak to five in that game and there was no end in sight. Hazard was named Player of the Month for his outstanding performance in October. On December 3 (14th matchday) they celebrated an impressive 3-1 away win at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium , where he scored his eighth goal of the season. On matchday 18, he scored his 50th time in the Premier League in a 3-0 home win against AFC Bournemouth and his club expanded the run to 12 wins in a row, a club record. Recently they also advanced to 1st place in the table. After the record could be expanded to 13 wins, the series broke on January 4, 2017 with the 0-2 away defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. Contes Chelsea found their way back to winning ways immediately after the defeat and Hazard secured important points for his team with important goals against Arsenal FC and West Ham United. On April 5 (Matchday 31) he scored Chelsea in the top match against Manchester City with two goals to win and also in the 3-1 away win against AFC Bournemouth three days later, he was able to score again. Chelsea were at the top of the table with seven points ahead of Tottenham six games before the end of the season.

Against the Spurs, Chelsea also had to play in the semi-finals of the FA Cup 2016/17 at home. Hazard came in this game in the 61st minute of the game with a 2-2 draw in the game and then decided the game in favor of his team with a goal and an assist. In the league they left nothing to burn with six wins in the remaining seven games and secured the championship with a 1-0 away win against West Bromwich Albion two games before the end . They lost the final of the FA Cup on May 27 with 1: 2 against Arsenal.

In the choice of Player of the Year in the Premier League, he had to give way to his teammate N'Golo Kanté this season . Hazard ended the season with 16 goals and five assists, which he was able to collect in 36 league games.

Season 2017/18

Eden Hazard during a league game against Newcastle United in January 2018

In training with the Belgian national team, Eden Hazard broke an ankle at the beginning of summer 2017, which put him out of action for several weeks. This injury made him miss the entire pre-season, league opener and FA Community Shield 2015 . The latter was lost 5-2 on penalties against Arsenal FC. Hazard and Chelsea failed to find the glamor and dominance of the previous season this 2017/18 season, but held up in the international places and did not crash like they did in the 2015/16 season. He scored his first goal of the season on October 28 (Matchday 10) when he scored the goal of the day in a 1-0 away win against AFC Bournemouth. In the 4-0 away win against West Bromwich Albion, he scored twice three weeks later. On matchday 15 he netted again twice in a 3-1 home win against Newcastle United. On January 20, 2018, he marked his third brace of the season in a 4-0 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion and he had already scored 100 career goals. Both in the surprising 1: 4 away defeat against Watford FC , as well as in the 3: 0 home win against West Bromwich, he was able to score again. However, his goals could not iron out the weak start to 2017. In the eleven league games since the beginning of the year, you could only win three and lose five. Accordingly, Chelsea lost the connection in the championship race, but remained in the top 6.

The group stage of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League ended after difficulties in second place behind AS Roma . However, they failed again in the round of 16. This time not at Paris Saint-Germain , as in the last two participations, but at FC Barcelona . The league ended up in 5th place. The only chance for a title was in the FA Cup 2017/18 , in which, as in the previous year, they reached the final. On May 19, 2018, Hazard pocketed a penalty in the first half of the final against Manchester United, which was the only goal of the day. With this, Hazard completed his collection of national titles, as he had already won the championship and the League Cup in previous years.

Hazard was used in 52 games across all competitions in the 2017/18 season, in which he scored 17 goals and assisted in 13 more.

Season 2018/19

Eden Hazard after winning the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League in May 2019

After not meeting expectations in the previous season, there was another personnel restructuring at Chelsea, during which the master coach Antonio Conte was dismissed during the preparation for the 2018/19 season and replaced by the previous coach of SSC Napoli , Maurizio Sarri . However, the FA Community Shield 2018 was lost for the fifth time in a row under the new coach, this time in the absence of Hazards against Manchester City. In the league, however , the Blues got off to an excellent start and Hazard finally became a superstar in England. The first five league games could all be won and he scored in each. On matchday five he scored a three-pack in a 4-1 home win against Cardiff City and at that point already had five goals this season. In the third round of the EFL Cup 2018/19 against Liverpool FC, he scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute of the game to make it 2-1. The Belgian met again in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the league three days later. He also netted in the 3-0 away win against Southampton FC a week later and also prepared a goal for Álvaro Morata .

The series of unbeaten games lasted 18 competitive games until they conceded the first defeat of the season on November 24 (13th matchday) away against Tottenham Hotspur. Hazard then appeared as a goal setter and assisted his team with a total of five goals in the next four league games. On Boxing Day 2018, he scored twice in the 2-1 away win against Watford FC. In this game he made his 100th goal for the Blues in his 322nd competitive game . On January 24, he scored in the second leg of the semi-finals of the EFL Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. This game was won on penalties and Hazard, as the standard fifth shooter on his team, did not have to kick his penalty kick after two Spurs players had previously failed in their attempts. The final was lost to Manchester City, in which you had to go back to the penalty shootout. In the league they were in the international ranks at the time and in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League they survived the group stage almost flawlessly, in which Hazard only appeared in three games. Also in the round of 16 against Malmö FF and in the round of 16 against Dynamo Kiev they didn't have to rely on him and “walked” into the quarter-finals.

On April 3, 2019, he scored in a 3-0 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion and set up another goal. Despite a weak end of the season, in which they could only get six points in the last five league games, they reached third place in the table. This enables Chelsea to participate in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League .

After being able to eliminate Sparta Prague with two victories in the quarter-finals of the Europa League , they met Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals of the competition . After they did not get beyond a 1-1 draw in the first leg away from home, they also failed to win the game in the second leg at home at Stamford Bridge after regular time. The game ended again 1-1 and neither team could score a goal in extra time that would have prevented a penalty shoot-out. In the penalty shootout, Hazard started as his team's fifth shooter and pocketed the penalty, bringing Chelsea to the final. In the 4-1 victory in the final on May 29 at Baku National Stadium , he delivered an outstanding game and carried his team to the title with two goals and one assist. Hazard hinted after the game that it would be his last in Chelsea's shirt as he was toying with a move to Real Madrid at the time . Indeed, it should have been his last game for Chelsea.

His final season in the jersey of the Blues was best time based on statistics. In 52 competitive appearances, he scored 21 goals and prepared 17. He played a total of seven years for Chelsea, for which he appeared in 352 competitive games and scored 110 goals.

Real Madrid (since 2019)

On June 7, 2019, the transfer of Eden Hazards to the Spanish top club Real Madrid was mutually confirmed, where he signed a five-year contract with a term until June 30, 2024 and is to receive an annual salary of 15 million euros net. This change put an end to the months-long and sometimes even years-long media speculation that Hazard repeatedly associated with the La Liga club during his time at Chelsea . The Spaniards paid a transfer fee of 100 million euros for the services of the winger, which can increase to 130 million euros through future bonus payments, making it one of the most expensive transfers in football history. Hazard was presented in front of over 50,000 fans at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu and later received the prestigious jersey number 7 from Mariano , which had previously been worn by club greats such as Cristiano Ronaldo , Rául and Emilio Butragueño .

Season 2019/20

Eden Hazard in a friendly against FC Red Bull Salzburg in August 2019

On July 21, 2019, Eden Hazard made his debut for Real Madrid in a preparation game against FC Bayern Munich in Houston . During the preparation period, he scored the first goal for his new employer in a 1-0 win against FC Red Bull Salzburg . In the first few weeks he presented himself much more full and thus came under public criticism for the first time, although he was accused of gaining mass on vacation more often during his time at Chelsea. Hazard would later confirm that he came to Madrid seven kilograms overweight. He missed the first season games of the season due to an injury to the anterior thigh muscles (more precisely the rectus femoris muscle ). He finally made his debut on September 14, 2019 (4th match day) in a 3-2 home win against UD Levante , when he replaced Casemiro in the 60th minute of the game . He scored his first goal on October 5 (8th matchday) in a 4-2 home win against Granada CF , where he was able to prepare another goal for Los Blancos. Despite this hit, Hazard was criticized in the media and by Real supporters for his bad start to the season. The Belgian injured himself again on November 26, 2019 when he was fouled by his compatriot Thomas Meunier in the 2-2 draw in the Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain . Initially, there was talk of a bruise on his ankle, with ten days of downtime. In early December 2019, however, it was announced that Hazard was suffering from a micro-fracture in his right ankle and would have to pause until February 2020. Before he returned, he missed 16 competitive games, including the first El Clásico of the 2019/20 season and his team's victory at the Supercopa de España 2019 . He only played two league games until he broke his ankle in the 0-1 away defeat against the UD Levante on February 22, 2020 (25th matchday) and was injured again for two months. Until the forced break due to the Covid-19 pandemic , he was therefore only in 15 of Real Madrid's 39 competitive games and only in four over the full distance of the game. Overall, he managed only one goal, but he prepared five hits.

National team

Juniors (2006 to 2008)

Hazard went through various Belgian youth national teams, starting with the U15, for which he completed five missions and scored one goal. Since September 2006 he played in the Belgian U-16 national team for which he played four games in two months. On October 3, 2006, he scored his only two goals in this junior selection in the 3-2 test match win. He then began to play in the U-17 team, for which he made his debut on October 27 in a 6-1 loss to Spain . He took part in the U-17 European Championship 2007 , which was held in Belgium. There he scored his first international goal in the first group game in a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands on May 2, 2007. In the 1: 2 away defeat in the friendly test match against the French selection , he scored his second international goal on August 10. At the tournament, Hazard showed strong performances and attracted the attention of the general public for the first time. With Belgium he was eliminated in the semi-finals in extra time against Spain, but they qualified for the 2007 U-17 World Cup in South Korea . There he was used in all three games of the group stage, in which the Belgians were already bottom of the group.

Although he played a total of four games for the U17s after the tournament, he was also in action for the U19s at the same time . He made his debut on October 12, 2007 in a 4-0 away win against Romania in qualifying for the U-19 European Championship in 2008 . He scored his first goal in the 5-0 away win in qualifying for the U-19 European Championship 2009 against Estonia on October 7, 2008. He then scored six goals in the next five international matches and scored in every single one. After they could not qualify for this tournament and Hazard had already played in the focus of the A-selection at Lille OSC , Hazard was no longer used in any junior national team. For the U17 he had played 17 games in two years in which he scored twice and in the U19 he netted six times in 11 appearances.

Men (since 2008)

Beginnings

On the occasion of a friendly against Luxembourg , Eden Hazard was nominated for the first time by coach René Vandereycken for the Belgian national team on November 18, 2008 . He made his debut a day later at the age of 17 years and 316 days when he came on for Wesley Sonck in a 1-1 draw in the 67th minute . After three more short appearances, he was used for the first time from the start by the new interim coach Franky Vercauteren in the 3-1 defeat in the friendly against the Czech Republic on August 12, 2009 . After Vercauteren's departure, he developed into a regular player under the Dutchman Dick Advocaat . On November 14, 2009 he played a full game for the first time and prepared two goals for Belgium in a 3-0 home win against Hungary .

In May 2010, Advocaat was given by Georges Leekens , who in a year and a half became the fourth coach who trained Hazard in the national team. Under the new trainer he kept his place in the starting line-up for the first three games, but was then mainly used as a substitute in the next games. Leekens justified this step with the weak form Hazards at Lille and his lack of commitment and will in training. After a poor performance in a qualifier for the 2012 European Championship against Turkey on June 3, 2011, Hazard was discovered after his substitution in a restaurant near the stadium, where he was eating a hamburger while the game was still running . This action later received considerable media coverage in his home country as Burgergate . Hazard later apologized to Leekens and the public for the incident, but was suspended from it for three games. After a Hazards meeting with Leekens, Leekens lifted the suspension. He finally missed the following qualifying game against Slovenia after he was not nominated for the matchday squad.

In autumn 2011 he regained his regular position on the wing and scored his first goal in the national team in his 23rd international match in a 4-1 home win against Kazakhstan on October 7th . The qualification ended in third place behind Germany and Turkey, which was not enough for participation in the final round. He scored his second international goal in the 2-2 draw in the friendly against Montenegro .

Establishment, World Championship 2014 and European Championship 2016

In September 2012, qualification for the 2014 World Cup started and Hazard started as a regular player. On March 22, 2013 he scored his first goal in the 2-0 away win against Macedonia in the fifth qualifying game. Four days later, he scored the goal of the day in a 1-0 home win at King Baudouin Stadium against Macedonia. The qualification was completed with 26 points in the first place in the table and Hazard was used in nine games in which he scored twice. At this time a new "golden generation" of Belgian football began, in which he became a key player.

He was part of the squad that represented Belgium at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and after the strong qualification belonged to the extended circle of favorites. In the first game against Algeria, he assisted Dries Mertens' decisive goal for the 2-1 win in the 80th minute. In the second group game against Russia , he made another template when he played the pass to hit Divock Origi to make it 1-0 in the 88th minute . After qualifying for the knockout stage after two wins , Hazard was given a break in the last group game against South Korea and was only substituted on in the final phase of the game. In the round of 16 they met the United States team , against which they won 2-1 in extra time. Hazard was in his 50th international match until the 111th minute of play on the field and was then replaced by Nacer Chadli . In the quarterfinals against Argentina they were eliminated from the competition with a 0-1 defeat.

In the second group game of qualifying for the 2016 European Championship , he scored one goal in a 5-0 home win against Cyprus and prepared another. Due to a suspension of the nominal captain Vincent Kompany , he took over the captain's armband for the first time in the friendly against France . He scored his eighth international goal in the 4: 3 away win. In the next five qualifying games he then scored four goals and led his nation through a successful group stage that ended first with two points ahead of Wales .

At the finals in France he represented the injured Kompany again as captain. In the group stage , he prepared two goals for his team, which ended up second in the table. He scored his first goal in the tournament in the 4-0 round of 16 victory over Hungary and prepared a goal for Michy Batshuayi . In the quarter-finals, they were eliminated from the European Championship with a 3-1 defeat against Wales. Hazard played in all five of Belgium's games before the start, finished four and, alongside Welshman Aaron Ramsey , was the top preparer of the competition with four assists.

Captain role at the 2018 World Cup

Hazard for the national team at the 2018 World Cup .

After the 2016 European Championship, Hazard finally took over the captain's loop from the frequently injured Vincent Kompany and led his nation through qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . Belgium won all of the first three qualifying matches, with two goals and three assists. The 8-1 home win against Estonia marked one of the greatest wins in history and Hazard scored once in that game. The 9-0 win against Gibraltar in the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium in Liège was, along with two other games in which you could win by nine goals, the highest victory in the history of the national team. Hazard contributed the interim 6-0 in the 45th minute of the game and then prepared Thomas Meunier's next goal . Hazard scored twice for his home country for the first time in the 4-0 home win against Cyprus in the last qualifying game. Belgium dominated Group H and qualified with 28 points from ten games (nine wins, one draw) and a goal difference of +37 for the finals in Russia .

At the 2018 World Cup, the Belgians again belonged to the extended circle of favorites around their key player Hazard. Hazard led his country as captain in the tournament, in which they started with a sovereign 3-0 win against Panama . Hazard prepared the third goal by Romelu Lukaku . In the second group game, he scored twice in a 5-2 win over Tunisia . With these two victories, Belgium had already qualified for the final round before the last group game, so Hazard was spared in the 1-0 win against England by coach Roberto Martínez . In the round of 16 against Japan they were already 2-0 behind after early goals in the second half, but Belgium managed to turn the game around in the remainder of the season. Hazard went ahead as the leader, preparing a hit, and was later elected Man of the Match . He also took his strong form into the quarter-final against Brazil , which Belgium won 2-1 and thus made the second semi-final at a World Cup perfect. In the semifinals you were ultimately defeated by the eventual world champion France. The strong World Cup ended with a 2-0 win in the game for third place against England , in which Hazard scored his third tournament goal.

His strong performance at the World Cup brought him the award for the second best player of the tournament (Silver Ball). He was used in six games in which he scored three goals and two assists.

On March 24, 2019, Hazard became the third Belgian national player to break the 100th international match in the qualifying match for the 2021 European Championship against Cyprus and also scored his 30th goal, drawing level with Paul Van Himst and Bernard Voorhoof as the second most successful goalscorer.

Play style

Hazard's favored position is the left wing despite his stronger right foot , but Hazard is known as a flexible player. On the field he usually occupies these, but during his time at OSC Lille often changed sides due to his bipod. In the Belgian national team, he often plays a more central role than "tens", which he also played in the 2012/13 season at Lille. Among the Chelsea coaches Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri the striker was also more often than in Hazard weakness Striker resorted.

Hazards strengths include his speed, agility, creativity, explosiveness and dribbling . In combination with his low center of gravity and his small body height of 173 cm, he is capable of quick body deceptions, turns and sudden steps, which he can hardly be stopped by defenders. In addition to these qualities, he has a strong degree and is known as an outstanding free kick and penalty taker.
