Bernard Lama (born April 7, 1963 in Saint-Symphorien (Indre-et-Loire) ) is a former French football goalkeeper and later football coach .

Career

Lama made 44 appearances for the French national team between February 1993 and September 2000 . He was voted Footballer of the Year in France in 1994 and was in goal for France at the 1996 European Championship . In 1997 Lama tested positive for cannabis and was banned for four months.

Later in 1998 he wore the shirt number 1 again for the national team, but was only on the bench behind Fabien Barthez at the 1998 World Cup in his own country . At the European Championships in 2000 he was allowed to play against the Netherlands in the last group game when progress was already certain.

Bernard Lama ended his active career in 2001.

In July 2006 he took over the post of Kenyan national coach. In his debut as a coach, his team was defeated by the Eritrean national soccer team . After two months in office, he was replaced by Tom Olaba .
