The Division 1 1989/90 was the 52nd staging of the professional French football league. Champion was Olympique Marseille for the sixth time since 1937 , which was able to defend its title from the previous season .
The first game day was July 21, 1989, the last game day was May 19, 1990. There was a winter break from December 18 to February 3.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- a club from the far north ( Lille OSC ),
- three from Paris and Bourgogne ( Paris Saint-Germain , the renamed Racing Paris 1 , AJ Auxerre ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Metz , newly promoted FC Mulhouse , FC Sochaux ),
- three from the northwest ( SM Caen , relegation winner Brest Armorique FC , FC Nantes ),
- two from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux , FC Toulouse ),
- eight from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , promoted Olympique Lyon , the renamed HSC Montpellier , defending champions Olympique Marseille , SC Toulon-Var , OGC Nice , AS Cannes , AS Monaco ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
Even before the start of this season, money did not seem to play a role for Marseille in order to further strengthen the team squad - as in the two previous years - in terms of quality and quantity. This time the French like Amoros , Roche and Tigana moved , plus Francescoli , Mozer and the 44 million FF transfer Waddle from South America and Europe to the Canebière . And when Olympique was only in second place behind Bordeaux after the first half of the season, President Tapie opened up further sources of finance, first bringing the young Deschamps from Nantes and two more goalkeepers in Castaneda (Saint-Étienne) and Rousseau (Laval) . Marseille had got off to a good start into the season, had decided numerous matches after half an hour with his often spectacular offensive style and took turns with the Girondins in the lead from the second matchday on. Over the entire season, OM was at the top of the table a total of 13 times, Bordeaux, which had strengthened defensively in particular ( Bell , Battiston ) and was formed by coach Goethals into an almost indomitable team, especially in front of their own audience, but even 24 times. The Girondins also clearly won the first meeting of the two.
In contrast, Montpellier was never able to fulfill the role of secret favorite that was still assigned to him in the summer of 1989. In particular, coach Jacquet failed to create a functioning ensemble from the nominally strong attacking trio Cantona - Paille - Xuereb , and the MHSC started with three defeats in a row, was relegated for a long time and was only able to work its way up to the middle of the table towards the end of the season. After all, Montpellier won the French cup competition after a final against Racing Paris, who then relegated from Division 1 and voluntarily made a fresh start in the third division . At the top of the table, Marseille won the top duel again at the beginning of April and then defended their narrow lead until the end of the season. With Brest, only one league competitor had succeeded in the second half of the season, at least defeating these two dominating clubs in front of a home crowd. The Division 1 top scorer's crown was won for the third time in a row by Marseille center forward Schappappapá (30 goals scored); this had only been achieved by three other players ( Skoblar , Bianchi and Onnis ).
In the lower region of the table, promoted Mulhouse failed mainly because of its weakness away from home; the Alsatians remained without a win in foreign stadiums, where they only got five draws, and they had to return immediately to the second division. The third from last from Nice, however, secured relegation in the subsequent barrages , so that for the following season with Stade Rennes and AS Nancy only two newcomers completed the circle of the first division.
