Division 1 1954/55

The Division 1 1955-56 was the 18th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was OGC Nice , which won his third title since 1951 .

The first match day was August 21, 1955; the last games were played at the beginning of June 1956 because the games scheduled for February 19 and 26 had to be canceled due to the weather and had to be rescheduled completely. The actual, almost two-week “winter break” took place this time between December 18th and January 1st.

societies

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the pre-season no worse than 15th, a direct promoter from the second division - the second, Red Star Olympique , was subsequently denied the right to promotion by the association , the 17th of which was the first Liga, Troyes-Savinienne, benefited - as well as the winner of the relegation . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

Practically throughout the season and until the end of the season there was a pentathlon at the top of the table, even if on 32 of the 34 game days - including the last decisive one - the table leader was OGC Nice. The success of the Aiglons ("young eagles") from the Côte d'Azur was less due to his attack, which was an average goal despite the commitment of the highly acclaimed Argentinian center forward Rubén Bravo, than to his good defense, which had to accept the fewest goals in the league. Lens, as the most stubborn competitor, only lost three points at home, but was too vulnerable away. In the middle of the table, the performance of two teams with highly opposing conditions caused a stir. The newly promoted "worker footballer" from Sedan-Torcy, who had only assumed professional status in 1953 and whose players were almost entirely full-time, distanced the "great Reims" by two points and also won the cup competition this season . Defending champion Reims, on the other hand, who had not finished a single season worse than fourth since 1945/46 , was at the top of the table for a week after matchday 17, but then “it seemed to have been downright distracted from the league by his participation in the European Cup to be".

In the table basement Troyes' relegation was certain early on, as well as that apart from Bordeaux and Lille no other club had to worry anymore; only the question of which of these two got an additional chance of staying up through the barrages was only decided at the last minute. Lille, who was third from last last year and started this season catastrophically (nine defeats in the first eleven games), seized this tip of hope, and only thanks to his better goal difference. The Girondins were still in midfield at the beginning of winter, but they really crashed in the second half of the season and only got three points from February. Lille failed in the subsequent relegation on the third of Division 2 , the "little northern rival" US Valenciennes-Anzin , which at the same time Olympique Marseille became the last remaining founding member of the professional league, which had never been relegated since 1932 . For the following season , UC and SCO Angers were promoted to Division 1 in addition to the USVA Stade Rennes .
