Alphonse Martinez

Alphonse Martinez (born June 6, 1928 in Nice ) is a former French football player .

Career

The 178 centimeter tall defender Martinez was 23 years old when he was accepted into the professional squad of the first division club OGC Nice in the 1951/52 season. During the season he came at a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, to his debut in the elite class of French football, but he was initially not considered again. Nevertheless, thanks to the contested encounter, he was one of the championship team of 1952, as the teammates were able to secure the title. After 1952 he was called up more often, even if he could not take an undisputed regular place.

From 1955 on, however, he was an integral part of the first team and was French champion for the second time in 1956. This brought the club a participation in the European Cup 1956/57 , which meant for Martinez his debut at European level. He played a total of eleven European games without winning a title. Towards the end of the 1950s, he lost his permanent place at Nice again, but continued to regularly receive the trust of his coach. After his last game shortly before his 33rd birthday, he ended his active career in 1961 after 193 first division games with two goals and two championships. His son Georges Martinez , born in 1954, was later also a professional footballer.
